Granulomatous prostatitis--an infrequent diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous prostatitis is an unusual benign inflammatory process of the prostate. Clinically, it mimics prostatic carcinoma, thus requiring pathological examination for diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Histopathological records of 1353 prostate specimens received in the Department of Pathology, Government Medical College, Chandigarh, India, over a period of 8 years (1995-2002) were reviewed and 20 cases of granulomatous prostatitis were retrieved. RESULTS: Out of 20 cases of granulomatous prostatitis, we encountered 12 cases of non-specific granulomatous prostatitis, two case

Acoustic schwannoma and arachnoid cyst colocated in the cerebellopontine angle--case report.

A 50-year-old female presented with a right acoustic schwannoma colocated with a cerebellopontine angle arachnoid cyst. The arachnoid cyst was distinct from the arachnoid cap surrounding the acoustic schwannoma. Initial excision of the arachnoid cyst created the space required to excise the schwannoma. The acoustic schwannoma had surprisingly dense adhesions to the brainstem, probably due to the constant pressure exerted by the cyst displacing the tumor towards the brainstem. The acoustic schwannoma was excised by meticulous dissection. Such a coexisting lesion should be suspected when a large

Chondrocyte hypertrophy in the growth plate: a short communication on probable mechanism.

The process by which chondrocytes hypertrophy has been deduced from observations on standard histology sections of the rabbit growth plate is reported. Features suggestive of an osmotic process were observed, namely a hierarchy of cell sizes, cell rupture, an adjoining 'open' microcirculation and a permeable partition between cells and blood.

Changes as the result of ageing in extraocular muscles: a post-mortem study.

BACKGROUND: Extraocular muscles differ from typical skeletal muscle in many respects such as smaller fibre size, high mitochondrial content, unusual contractile/innervation patterns and highly developed microvascular bed. Changes in typical skeletal muscle with ageing have been well documented yet the reports on ageing changes in extraocular muscles is limited. The aim of this study was to examine these changes. METHODS: The right inferior and medial rectus muscles were removed at post-mortem from patients with no history of prior ocular or neuromuscular disease. These included 25 patients ag

Thymic tuberculosis: a case report.

Tuberculosis of the thymus is an extremely rare diagnosis, only three cases having been reported in the literature to date. Clinical, roentgenographic and histopathological findings are presented in a 29-year-old woman. The patient underwent sternotomy for a mediastinal mass suspected to be a thymoma, which was histopathologically diagnosed as thymic tuberculosis.

Peripheral nerve injury triggers noradrenergic sprouting within dorsal root ganglia.

In humans, trauma to a peripheral nerve may be followed by chronic pain syndromes which are only relieved by blockade of the effects of sympathetic impulse traffic. It is presumed that, after the lesion, noradrenaline released by activity of sympathetic postganglionic axons excites primary afferent neurons by activating alpha-adrenoceptors, generating signals that enter the 'pain pathways' of the central nervous system. The site of coupling is unclear. In some patients local anaesthesia of the relevant peripheral nerve does not alleviate pain, implying that ectopic impulses arise either within

Possible neural network mediating jaw opening during prey-catching behavior of the frog.

The prey-catching behavior of the frog is a complex, well-timed sequence of stimulus response chain of movements. After visual analysis of the prey, a size dependent program is selected in the motor pattern generator of the brainstem. Besides this predetermined feeding program, various direct and indirect sensory inputs provide flexible adjustment for the optimal contraction of the executive muscles. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether trigeminal primary afferents establish direct contacts with the jaw opening motoneurons innervated by the facial nerve. The experiments were

Lesions of the dorsal subiculum and the dorsal hippocampus impaired pattern separation in a task using distinct and overlapping visual stimuli.

The contribution of the dorsal subiculum (DS) and of the dorsal hippocampus (DH) to memory for distinct and overlapping visual stimuli was examined. Rats with selective lesions of the DS or the DH were compared to sham-operated rats on a delayed matching-to-place task guided by distal visual cues in a modified radial-arm maze. Overlapping distal visual cues could be perceived from three arm entrances (adjacent arms) and a unique set of distal cues were more likely to be seen from the other two arm entrances (distinct arms). Rats with DS lesions were impaired on trials with baited adjacent arms

Transbronchial biopsy is clinically useful in classifying patients with interstitial pneumonia associated with polymyositis and dermatomyositis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The histological type of intraluminal fibrosis is an important prognostic factor for interstitial pneumonia. We therefore examined whether transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) specimens are useful for predicting the clinical course and prognosis of patients with interstitial pneumonia associated with polymyositis and dermatomyositis (PM/DM), with particular attention to the different types of intraluminal fibrosis. METHODS: Twenty-five cases of interstitial pneumonia associated with PM/DM were classified according to the pattern of intraluminal fibrosis as assessed by T

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst of the patella: a case report.

Aneurysmal bone cysts account for less than 1% of primary bone tumours and have a predilection for the metaphyses of the long bones of the leg. Only 1% of all aneurysmal bone cysts occur in the patella. We report on a 30-year-old man with a primary aneurysmal bone cyst in the right patella treated with curettage. The defect was filled with demineralised bone matrix and allogeneic cancellous bone graft. At the 1.5-year follow-up, the bone graft was well incorporated, the patient experienced no pain or tenderness and had a full range of knee movement.

Correlation of bone scintigraphy and histological findings in medial tibial syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To correlate bone scintigraphy and histopathological findings in patients with medial tibial syndrome. METHODS: Twenty patients (32 limbs) with a clinical diagnosis of medial tibial syndrome had surgery. Bone scintigraphy before the operation was compared with the histological appearance of bone and periosteal specimens obtained at surgery. RESULTS: Delayed bone scintigraphy showed normal appearance in 11 limbs, characteristic diffuse tubular pattern uptake in 16 limbs, and focal uptake in five. Periosteal histology disclosed fibrous thickening as the most common finding associate

Cell biology of valvular interstitial cells.

OBJECTIVE: To review the cell biology of the interstitial cells of heart valves. While studying the function of interstitial cells of heart valves, the authors observed that interstitial cells from porcine mitral valve have mixed phenotypic expression. DATA SOURCE: English-language literature from 1985-95 that discussed the cell biology of heart valve interstitial cells, including their structural and functional characteristics. RESULTS: Morphologically, heart valve interstitial cells have characteristics of both fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. It is not clear, however, whether these ce

The vestibular nuclei in the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus): VI. Afferents from the cerebellum.

Following horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injections in the superior, in the Deiters', in the medial, and in the descending vestibular nuclei in the hen, labeled cells are found in lateral longitudinal zones in the ipsilateral cerebellar cortex, most numerously in the anterior lobe, the nodulus, the uvula, and the auricle. Furthermore, labeled cells are found bilaterally in the ventral parts of the medial and intermediate cerebellar nuclei. Lesions in the cerebellar cortex of the anterior lobe and in anterior parts of the posterior lobe result in terminal degeneration, mainly in the nucleus Deite
