Ultrastructure of the ram pinealocytes during breeding season in natural short and in artificial long photoperiods.

The study was performed from 20th September to 20th October on eight Polish Longwool rams, variety Pomorska (Pomeranian), aged 33 months, which were divided into two equal groups. The animals of control group were kept in natural photoperiod. The experimental group was maintained during 30 days in controlled lighting conditions (16L: 8D). On the thirtieth day of the experiment the animals were slaughtered between 1000h and 1200h. The pineal glands were prepared for EM. Point count analysis was employed to estimate the relative volumes of pinealocyte organelles. The increase of relative volumes…

Photoperiodic response of pineal-thyroid axis of the female Indian palm squirrel, Funambulus pennanti.

Effect of short (SP: 10 L: 14 D: Light: Dark) and long (LP: 14 L: 10 D) photoperiod was tested on pineal-thyroid axis in a tropical seasonally breeding rodent F. pennanti during sexually regressive phase of reproduction. SP reduced thyroid weight and plasma thyroxine (T4) as well as increased melatonin (aMT) while pinealectomy (Px) prevented such an effect of SP. LP and Px plus LP had no significant effect on thyroid activity when compared with their respective controls. These results suggest that SP stimulated pineal activity which increased the concentration of aMT, hence inhibited thyroid g…

The effect of environmental photoperiodicity on indole rhythms and locomotor activity in sighted and eye covered chickens.

Direct (via the skull) and indirect (via the eyes) light on the rate of adaptation of circadian rhythms of pineal, retina and serum indoleamines and of locomotor activity was examined by observing photoperiod reversal in eye covered and normally sighted chickens. Eye covering did not affect indoleamine levels nor locomotor activity on the regular light:dark (L:D) cycle. However, following photoperiod reversal, the eye covered chickens showed slower rates of adaptation of retinal melatonin and locomotor activity to the new L:D cycle than did the normal sighted chickens. Pineal and serum indole …

Effects of photoperiod and social variables on reproduction and growth in the male musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

In Exp. 1, the time course for the photoperiodic response in juvenile male musk shrews was examined by exposing animals to short (10L:14D) or long (14L:10D or 18L:6D) daylengths for 10, 20, 40 or 56 days. When compared with the response of animals maintained in long days, those exposed to short days showed an inhibition of reproductive maturation by 40 days of treatment. In Exp. 2, the combined effects of photoperiod and social cues were investigated in juvenile males that were either housed in short days (with or without a female) or in long days (with or without a female) for 40 days. The sh…

Thermoperiod and photoperiod interact to affect the phase of the plasma melatonin rhythm in the lizard, Tiliqua rugosa.

Rhythms of plasma melatonin levels were determined in lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) subjected to 6 h thermocycles (6 h, 33 degrees C thermophase; 18 h, 15 degrees C cryophase) placed at 4 different phases of a 12 h photocycle (12 h light: 12 h dark). The peak of the melatonin rhythm was either shifted at different rates, or inhibited by the light phase of the photocycle, depending upon the phase relationship between the thermocycle and the photocycle. The results indicate that the pineal organ of ectotherms is part of a circadian pacemaker system, transducing photothermal environmental information

Effect of melatonin on photoperiod responses, ovarian secretion of oestrogen, and coital responses in the domestic cat.

Ovarian activity was studied in cats treated with melatonin under different photoperiods and during folliculogenesis. The effect of melatonin on coital responses of LH release and sexual refractoriness was also studied. Some cats were treated with melatonin (5 mg every other day) while under a photoperiod stimulatory (24L:0D) or inhibitory (8L:16D) for ovarian activity. Ovarian activity was determined by oestrogen analysis of plasma and sexual receptivity by interaction with a male. Melatonin suppressed ovarian follicle development in animals exposed to 24L:0D during a 60-day photoperiod regim…

Sexual dimorphism and photoperiodism in cognitive and neuronal ionic changes in scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment.

Photoperiodism and biological sex are factors that may influence cognitive impairments. Scopolamine, a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, is a widely used pharmacological tool for modelling cognitive impairments, but its cellular interaction with photoperiodic cycle and sex is poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of photoperiodism and sex on neurobehavioural and ionic chnages in scopolamine-induced cognitively-impaired mice. Sixty-four male and female mice (18.5 ± 0.9 g) were assigned to eight groups; four tested during the photophase and four during the scoto…

Effects of Different Photoperiods on the Transcriptome of the Ovary and Small White Follicles in Zhedong White Geese.

Photoperiod can regulate the broodiness of geese and thus increase their egg-laying rate. The laying performance of geese is mainly determined by ovary and follicle development. To understand the effect of photoperiod on the ovary and small white follicles, sixteen 220-day-old healthy female Zhedong white geese were randomly divided into two groups for long photoperiods (15L:9D) and short photoperiods (9L:15D). The geese were euthanized after two months of feeding, and their ovaries and follicles were collected for transcriptome sequencing. RNA-seq analysis identified 187 and 448 differentiall…

The Response of the miRNA Profiles of the Thyroid Gland to the Artificial Photoperiod in Ovariectomized and Estradiol-Treated Ewes.

The photoperiod has been considered to be a key environmental factor in sheep reproduction, and some studies have shown that the thyroid gland plays an important role in mammalian reproduction, but the molecular mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we used the artificial-light-controlled, ovariectomized, and estradiol-treated model (OVX + E2 model); healthy and consistent 2-3-year-old Sunite multiparous ewes were collected; and thyroids were collected for testing, combined with RNA-seq technology and bioinformatics analysis, to analyze the effects of different photoperiods (long photoper…

Effects of photoperiod and food on glucose intolerance and subsequent ocular pathology in the fat sand rat.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its ocular complications, such as cataract and diabetic retinopathy (DR) have been linked to circadian rhythm-disturbances. Using a unique diurnal animal model, the sand rat (Psammomys obesus) we examined the effect of circadian disruption by short photoperiod acclimation on the development of T2DM and related ocular pathologies. We experimented with 48 male sand rats. Variables were day length (short photoperiod, SP, vs. neutral photoperiod NP) and diet (standard rodent diet vs. low-energy diet). Blood glucose, the presence of cataract and retinal pathology…

Effects of artificial photoperiods on antigen-dependent immune responses in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

In this study, we investigated the effects of the artificial photoperiods that mimic summer (16L:8D; 16 h Light: 8 h Dark) and winter (8L:16D) solstices, equinoxes (12L:12D), and the artificial 24-h light regimen (24L:0D) on the leukocyte populations and the T helper and regulatory type responses on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Using flow cytometry analysis, we found that photoperiod induces changes in head kidney leukocyte subsets. The lymphoid subset increased in the 16L:8D summer solstice regime. The analysis using antibodies against B and T cells showed the increase of CD4-1+ T lym…

Photoperiodic Modulation in Immune and Reproductive Systems in Japanese Quails (Coturnix japonica): A Morphometric Perspective.

The present study was designed to elucidate a relationship between lymphoid organs and reproductive activity in male Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) bred in a temperate region of Pakistan (30.3753° N, 69.3451° E) in response to photoperiodic changes. The research focused primarily on the relative morphological changes in primary (thymus and bursa of Fabricius) and secondary (spleen) lymphoid organs with respect to seasonal variations in the histomorphometry of testicular tissue. For this purpose, a comparable number of clinically healthy Japanese quails were exsanguinated during active (Ap…

Should I Lay or Should I Grow: Photoperiodic Versus Metabolic Cues in Chickens.

While photoperiod has been generally accepted as the primary if not the exclusive cue to stimulate reproduction in photoperiodic breeders such as the laying hen, current knowledge suggests that metabolism, and/or body composition can also play an influential role to control the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal (HPG)-axis. This review thus intends to first describe how photoperiodic and metabolic cues can impact the HPG axis, then explore and propose potential common pathways and mechanisms through which both cues could be integrated. Photostimulation refers to a perceived increase in day-length …

Action spectrum for photoperiodic control of thyroid-stimulating hormone in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

At higher latitudes, vertebrates exhibit a seasonal cycle of reproduction in response to changes in day-length, referred to as photoperiodism. Extended day-length induces thyroid-stimulating hormone in the pars tuberalis of the pituitary gland. This hormone triggers the local activation of thyroid hormone in the mediobasal hypothalamus and eventually induces gonadal development. In avian species, light information associated with day-length is detected through photoreceptors located in deep-brain regions. Within these regions, the expressions of multiple photoreceptive molecules, opsins, have …

Effects of Photoperiod on Epididymal and Sperm Morphology in a Wild Rodent, the Viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus).

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal South American wild rodent. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle with periods of maximum and minimum gonadal activity. Four segments have been identified in the epididymis of this species: initial, caput, corpus, and cauda. The main objective of this work was to relate the seasonal morphological changes observed in the epididymal duct with the data from epididymal sperm during periods of activity and gonadal regression using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under light and electron microscopy, epididymal corpu

Timing of photoperiodic competency causes phenological mismatch in balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.).

Plant phenology is expected to be sensitive to climate warming. In boreal trees, spring flush is primarily temperature driven, whereas height growth cessation and autumn leaf senescence are predominantly controlled by photoperiod. Cuttings of 525 genotypes from the full range of balsam poplar were planted into two common gardens (Vancouver and Indian Head, Canada) at similar latitudes, but with differing winter temperatures and growing seasons. There was clinal variation in spring and, particularly, summer and fall phenology. Bud flush and, despite milder climate, bud set and leaf drop were ea…

Analysis of synaptic bodies in the Sprague-Dawley rat pineal gland under extreme photoperiods.

Synaptic bodies (SBs) are small, prominent organelles in pinealocytes, most probably involved in signal transduction processes. To check the influence of the photoperiod on their shape plasticity and number we chose two extreme lighting conditions, i.e. 20h of illumination followed by 4h of darkness (LD 20:4) versus (LD 4:20). Pineal glands were assessed at 0, 4 and 13h after dark onset. Under both conditions reconstructed SBs were plates or ribbons but never spheres and there were no obvious differences in morphology. Photoperiodic changes in SB profile size and number were investigated: appl…

Photoperiodic regulation of androgen receptor and steroid receptor coactivator-1 in Siberian hamster brain.

Seasonal changes in the neuroendocrine actions of gonadal steroid hormones are triggered by fluctuations in daylength. The mechanisms responsible for photoperiodic influences upon the feedback and behavioral effects of testosterone in Siberian hamsters are poorly understood. We hypothesized that daylength regulates the expression of androgen receptor (AR) and/or steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1) in specific forebrain regions. Hamsters were castrated and implanted with either oil-filled capsules or low doses of testosterone; half of the animals remained in 16L/8D and the rest were kept in …
