Multicomponent Fitness Training Improves Walking Economy in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Walking economy declines with increasing age, possibly leading to mobility limitation in older adults. Multicomponent fitness training could delay the decline in walking economy. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effect of multicomponent fitness training on walking economy in older adults. METHODS: Participants were untrained adults, age 50 to 83 yr (N = 26, 10 males, age = 63 ± 6 yr, BMI = 25.6 ± 2.1 kg·m, mean ± SD). A control group was also recruited (N = 16, 9 males, age = 66 ± 10 yr, BMI = 25.4 ± 3.0 kg·m), matching the intervention group for age, weight, body compo

Comparing the impact of hip thrust versus squat training on lower limb performance in sub-elite athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the effects of squat (SQ) and hip thrust (HT) training on performance in lower body athletic tasks, across different groups. A comprehensive search was conducted up to 31 May 2024, using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Embase. SQ training was found to significantly improve vertical jump height (VJH) but greater than the HT. Neither SQ nor HT training had a significant impact on horizontal jump distance (HJD), short sprint time (SST), short sprint performance (SSP) or change of direction (COD) performance. In

Neuromuscular training for the prevention of ankle sprains in female athletes: a systematic review.

Ankle sprains are a common sports-related injury, and female athletes are more likely to sustain this injury than their male counterparts. Previous reviews have evaluated the efficacy of prevention programs in reducing ankle sprains in athletes, but no reviews have specifically focused on female athletes. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the sex-specific effectiveness of neuromuscular training (NMT) programs in reducing the risk of ankle sprains in female athletes. A search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases was performed using the terms: (propr

Preventive Biomechanics: A Paradigm Shift With a Translational Approach to Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Preventive medicine techniques have alleviated billions of dollars' worth of the economic burden in the medical care system through the implementation of vaccinations and screenings before the onset of disease symptoms. Knowledge of biomechanical tendencies has progressed rapidly over the past 20 years such that clinicians can identify, in healthy athletes, the underlying mechanisms that lead to catastrophic injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. As such, preventive medicine concepts can be applied to noncontact musculoskeletal injuries to reduce the economic b

The effect of deprivation on the developmental activities of adolescent rugby union players in Wales.

The developmental activities of rugby union players and their interaction with deprivation remain to be elucidated. Five-hundred and ninety elite junior rugby union players (14.8 ± 0.5 years) were split into deprivation quintiles. These players subsequently completed a participant history questionnaire to record their involvement in rugby and other sports. Players accumulated 1987 ± 1297 h in rugby between 6 and 15 years of age. During the mini rugby stage (6-10 years of age), players accumulated an average of 113 ± 105, 89 ± 69 and 43 ± 19 h per year in rugby play, practice and competition, r

Physical activity in older age: perspectives for healthy ageing and frailty.

Regular physical activity helps to improve physical and mental functions as well as reverse some effects of chronic disease to keep older people mobile and independent. Despite the highly publicised benefits of physical activity, the overwhelming majority of older people in the United Kingdom do not meet the minimum physical activity levels needed to maintain health. The sedentary lifestyles that predominate in older age results in premature onset of ill health, disease and frailty. Local authorities have a responsibility to promote physical activity amongst older people, but knowing how to st
