Magnitude estimation of loudness. II: Loudness perception in presbycusic listeners.

Because clinical methods most commonly used for assessing loudness are indirect measures that require one normal or near normal ear, loudness perception has not been studied thoroughly in listeners with symmetrical hearing loss. In this investigation, loudness perception was studied in three groups of listeners: normal listeners, listeners with asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss, and individuals with bilaterally symmetrical hearing impairment due to presbycusis. In Experiment 1, a Magnitude Estimation of Loudness (ME) technique was compared to Alternate Binaural Loudness Balance ( ABLB )

Atypical prosody in Asperger syndrome: perceptual and acoustic measurements.

It is known that individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) may show no problems with regard to what is said (e.g., lexical content) but tend to have difficulties in how utterances are produced, i.e., they may show prosodic impairments. In the present study, we focus on the use of prosodic features to express grammatical meaning. Specifically, we explored the sentence type difference between statements and questions that is conveyed by intonation, using perceptual and acoustic measurements. Children aged 8 and 9 years with AS (n = 12) were matched according to age and nonverbal intelligence with

The multichannel auditory brainstem implant: how many electrodes make sense?

OBJECT: Development of multichannel auditory brainstem implant (ABI) systems has been based in part on the assumption that audiological outcome can be optimized by increasing the number of available electrodes. In this paper the authors critically analyze this assumption on the basis of a retrospective clinical study performed using the Nucleus 22 ABI surface electrode array. METHODS: The perceptual performances of 61 patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2 were tested approximately 6 weeks after an eight-electrode ABI had been implanted. Of eight implanted electrodes 5.57 +/- 2.57 (mean +/- s

Comparison of the basal ganglia and cerebellum in shifting attention.

The basal ganglia and cerebellum have traditionally been associated with motor performance. Recently, there has been considerable interest regarding the contributions of these subcortical structures to aspects of cognition. In particular, both the basal ganglia and cerebellum have been hypothesized to be involved in the control of attentional set. To date, no neuropsychological studies have directly compared the effects of basal ganglia and cerebellar dysfunction on the same attention shifting tasks. To this end, we employed an alternating attention task that has been used to demonstrate putat

The structural and functional consequences of acoustic injury in the cochlea and peripheral auditory system: a five year update.

This presentation considers important developments and new trends related to acoustic injury in the peripheral auditory system reported during the past 5 years. The discussion begins with the effect overstimulation has on the "active" cochlear process, and the associated loss in receptive field (tuning curve) selectivity. Exposure to intense sound also changes the structure and function of the tectorial membrane, sensory hair bundles, tip links, and intracellular organelles. All of these injuries may change the way in which energy is delivered to the transduction channels of the hair cell. Imp

Human temporary threshold shift (TTS) and damage risk.

Information regarding the relation of human temporary threshold shift (TTS) to properties of steady-state and intermittent noise published since the 1966 appearance of the CHABA damage risk contours is reviewed. The review focuses on results from four investigative areas relevant to potential revision of the CHABA contours including effects of long-duration exposure and asymptotic threshold shifts (ATS); equivalent quiet and/or safe noise levels; effects of intermittency; and use of noise-induced temporary threshold shift (NITTS) to predict susceptibility to noise-induced permanent threshold s

Resting and high-frequency evoked 2-deoxyglucose uptake in the rat inferior colliculus: developmental changes and effects of short-term conduction blockade.

Development of resting and high-frequency-evoked metabolic patterns in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICC) in rat was investigated using the 2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) method. The effects of early short-term acoustic deprivation were studied by unilateral blockade of the external auditory meatus on postnatal day 12. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on 2-DG uptake in 5 regional sectors of ICC. Adult resting ICC uptake is robust and exhibits regional differentiation with the ventromedial region preferentially labelled. At 17 days of age, resting uptake is substant

[Bilateral caloric long-term irrigation as a method for the differentiation of tonal tinnitus].

In 307 subjects with tinnitus aurium, the parameters frequency, loudness, and masking levels did not correlate significantly with the basic diseases. As a new possibility in differentiation between tinnitus of central or peripheral origin, bilateral caloric long-term irrigation of the ear canal is presented. Using warm water leads to an increase, cold water to a decrease in the loudness of tinnitus. Such results were found in cases of Menière's disease and noise-induced hearing loss. An explanation of this phenomenon lies in the hypothesis of tinnitus genesis established by Tonndorf.

Predicting emotion perception abilities for cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVE: In daily life, failure to perceive emotional expressions can result in maladjusted behaviour. For cochlear implant users, perceiving emotional cues in sounds remains challenging, and the factors explaining the variability in patients' sensitivity to emotions are currently poorly understood. Understanding how these factors relate to auditory proficiency is a major challenge of cochlear implant research and is critical in addressing patients' limitations. DESIGN: To fill this gap, we evaluated different auditory perception aspects in implant users (pitch discrimination, music process

Music Training and Education Slow the Deterioration of Music Perception Produced by Presbycusis in the Elderly.

The perception of music depends on the normal function of the peripheral and central auditory system. Aged subjects without hearing loss have altered music perception, including pitch and temporal features. Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a frequent condition in elderly people, produced by neurodegenerative processes that affect the cochlear receptor cells and brain circuits involved in auditory perception. Clinically, presbycusis patients have bilateral high-frequency hearing loss and deteriorated speech intelligibility. Music impairments in presbycusis subjects can be attributed t

Extensive residence in a second language environment modifies perceptual strategies for suprasegmental categorization.

Languages differ in the importance of acoustic dimensions for speech categorization. This poses a potential challenge for second language (L2) learners, and the extent to which adult L2 learners can acquire new perceptual strategies for speech categorization remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of extensive English L2 immersion on speech perception strategies and dimension-selective-attention ability in native Mandarin speakers. Experienced first language (L1) Mandarin speakers (length of U.K. residence > 3 years) demonstrated more native-like weighting of cues to L2 suprasegme

Newborns' cry melody is shaped by their native language.

Human fetuses are able to memorize auditory stimuli from the external world by the last trimester of pregnancy, with a particular sensitivity to melody contour in both music and language. Newborns prefer their mother's voice over other voices and perceive the emotional content of messages conveyed via intonation contours in maternal speech ("motherese"). Their perceptual preference for the surrounding language and their ability to distinguish between prosodically different languages and pitch changes are based on prosodic information, primarily melody. Adult-like processing of pitch intervals

Acoustic and perceptual evidence relevant to sexual selection in human voice dimorphism.

Male and female voices differ markedly in pitch and timbre. Previous work suggests that fundamental frequency (F0) and formant dispersion (Df) correlate with body size, but whether these associations hold within each sex and whether subtle acoustic changes affect social perception remain unclear. We integrate acoustic measurements and perceptual experiments to dissect the roles of F0 and Df in signaling height and guiding social judgments. Acoustic data from 40 males and 40 females showed that F0 exhibited a substantial sex difference but little evidence of a within-sex association with height

Auditory processing and morphological anomalies in medial geniculate nucleus of Cntnap2 mutant mice.

Genetic epidemiological studies support a role for CNTNAP2 in developmental language disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, specific language impairment, and dyslexia. Atypical language development and function represent a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with evidence suggesting that aberrant auditory processing-including impaired spectrotemporal processing and enhanced pitch perception-may both contribute to an anomalous language phenotype. Investigation of gene-brain-behavior relationships in social and repetitive ASD symptomatology have benefited from experimentation on…

Neural Representations of Perceptual Reorganization in the Musical Scale Illusion.

The auditory system organizes complex acoustic input into coherent perceptual streams, yet how neural responses relate to physical stimulus structure and reported perception when the two diverge remains unclear. We investigated perceptual reorganization using the scale illusion, in which interleaved tone sequences presented separately to the two ears are typically heard as continuous melodic streams.Thirty participants listened to illusory, zigzag, and continuous sequences during EEG recording and reported whether each sequence sounded continuous or zigzag. Temporal response function models ch

Acoustic reflex temporal summation measured at threshold.

This study measured the threshold of the acoustic reflex as a function of reflex-activating stimulus duration. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) were measured for tonal stimuli at frequencies of 1000 and 3000 Hz and broadband noise at six durations between 20 and 500 msec for both normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Traditional techniques and response averaging were used. Results suggest that these methods have a significant influence on ART and reflex temporal summation at threshold. Lowest thresholds and almost no temporal summation were found with a response averaging technique and a bidi

[Ototoxicity caused by anti-epileptic drugs].

According to the literature, a number of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) have an ototoxic effect. The mechanism of hearing dysfunction due to the use of AEDs is not well known. The main clinical manifestations of the cochleotoxic effect of the drugs are: tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss, impaired pitch perception, hyperacusis. These disorders can be reversible and irreversible. Attending physicians should be careful when prescribing AEDs to patients who have had hearing impairment before, as well as diagnose hearing loss in a timely manner with subsequent correction of anti-epileptic therapy.

Hearing investigation in relation to the duration of acoustic signals.

The present study was designed to test the peculiarities of hearing perception on dependence of acoustic signal duration both in normal hearing subjects and in those with conductive and sensorineural deafness. It was found that in patients with pure conductive hearing impairment the shortest time necessary for tonal sensation of the sound signal corresponded to normal values. However, in 35 out of 63 patients investigated with cochlear deafness, it was found that the signal had to be of longer duration before pitch could be distinguished from a click.

Distributional learning of musical pitch despite tone deafness in individuals with congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is an innate and lifelong deficit of music processing. This study investigated whether adult listeners with amusia were still able to learn pitch-related musical chords based on stimulus frequency of statistical distribution, i.e., via distributional learning. Following a pretest-training-posttest design, 18 amusics and 19 typical, musically intact listeners were assigned to bimodal and unimodal conditions that differed in distribution of the stimuli. Participants' task was to discriminate chord minimal pairs, which were transposed to a novel microtonal scale. Accuracy rates
