This study reports the oral anti-inflammatory profile of the crude extract (CE) of Mandevilla velutina, a plant which has been previously demonstrated to selectively antagonize bradykinin response of the isolated tissues on rat paw oedema and pleurisy caused by different phlogistic agents. The CE (50 to 200 mg/kg), given 60 min before, inhibited in a dose-dependent manner bradykinin (BK) and cellulose sulphate-induced paw oedema, maximal inhibition of 59% and 65%, respectively. In the same range dose the CE also significantly antagonized pleural exudate and cell infiltration caused by these su

The marginal agricultural-systems of the Machair in the Western Isles of Scotland often have limited micronutrient availability because of alkaline soils. Traditional landraces of oats, barley and rye are thought to be better adapted to cope with the limited manganese (Mn) availability of these soils. When commercial cultivars are grown on the Machair, limited Mn-availability reduces crop yield and quality. We hypothesised that traditional cereal landraces selected on the Machair acquire Mn more effectively and that this could be linked to exudation of phytase from roots which would release Mn

Dragon's blood is a common but non-specific name for red-coloured resins that are produced by various plants, particularly exudations from plant species belonging to the genera Dracaena and Daemonorops. Although dragon's blood is mentioned in historic sources as a colourant, it has hardly ever been identified in real artworks. This paper reports the identification and discrimination of dragon's blood produced by Dracaena cinnabari, Dracaena draco as well as Daemonorops draco and Daemonorops micracantha by means of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) within the context of a routine ana

In the rhizosphere, phosphorus (P) levels are low because of P uptake into the roots. Rhizobacteria live on carbon (C) exuded from roots, and may contribute to plant nutrition by liberating P from organic compounds such as phytates. We isolated over 300 phytate (Na-inositol hexa-phosphate; Na-IHP)-utilizing bacterial strains from the rhizosheath and the rhizoplane of Lupinus albus (L.). Almost all of the isolates were classified as Burkholderia based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Rhizosheath isolates cultured with Na-IHP as the only source of C and P showed lower P uptake at the same extracel

Signaling networks among multiple phytohormones fine-tune plant defense responses to insect herbivore attack. Previously, it was reported that the synergistic combination of ethylene (ET) and jasmonic acid (JA) was required for accumulation of the maize insect resistance1 (mir1) gene product, a cysteine (Cys) proteinase that is a key defensive protein against chewing insect pests in maize (Zea mays). However, this study suggests that mir1-mediated resistance to corn leaf aphid (CLA; Rhopalosiphum maidis), a phloem sap-sucking insect pest, is independent of JA but regulated by the ET-signaling

BACKGROUND: Engineering root microbiomes holds great promise to enhance plant health. Enhanced plant resistance via breeding or genetic modification can promote recruiting beneficial microbes, but is challenging to achieve.
RESULTS: Here we showed that calcium (Ca) addition caused significant changes in tomato physiology, resulting in enhanced immunity towards the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum along with increased levels of salicylic acid (SA), sugar content, and defense enzyme activities in roots. High Ca levels significantly altered the root microbiomes, enriching sixteen bacterial genera

The present study was undertaken to investigate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of the leaf and twig extracts of Dorstenia barteri (Moraceae) in mice. Both the leaf and twig extracts of Dorstenia barteri at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg showed significant (P < 0.05-0.01) antinociceptive activities in chemical-, mechanical- and thermal-induced pain test models. Intraperitoneal administration of the plant extracts at 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly (P < 0.05-0.01) inhibited carrageenin-induced acute inflammation in oedema paw weight, pulmonary oedema and number of pleural leucoc

The combined effects of applying extracts derived from plant debris and biostimulant microorganisms have not been thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the interaction between these components and plants remains poorly understood. Utilizing the commercial cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Unidarkwin) as a study model, we conducted a hydroponic experiment in a controlled growth chamber to assess the impact of foliar application of phenolic compounds extracted from Vitis vinifera leaves, combined with the inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum or Bacillus velezensis via roots. Plant growth,

Diffusion towards the root surface has recently been shown to control the uptake of metal ions from solutions. The uptake flux of phosphorus (P) from solutions often approaches the maximal diffusion flux at low external concentrations, suggesting diffusion-controlled uptake also for P. Potential diffusion limitation in P uptake from nutrient solutions was investigated by measuring P uptake of Brassica napus from solutions using P-loaded Al(2) O(3) nanoparticles as mobile P buffer. At constant, low free phosphate concentration, plant P uptake increased up to eightfold and that of passive, diffu

Sorgoleone is the major component of the hydrophobic root exudate of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. The presence of this allelochemical is intrinsically linked to root growth and the development of mature root hairs. However, factors modulating root formation and the biosynthesis of sorgoleone are not well known. Sorgoleone production was independent of early stages of plant development. The optimum temperature for root growth and sorgoleone production was 30 degrees C. Seedling development and sorgoleone levels were greatly reduced at temperatures below 25 degrees C and above 35 degre

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are low-molecular-weight metabolites released by bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere. mVOCs have emerged as important mediators of plant-microbes' communication and systemic defense priming. This review covers current knowledge of the biochemical diversity of the mVOCs, encompassing major classes of mVOCs, and their mechanisms of action in plant defense. We delineate the molecular signaling cascades activated by key mVOCs such as 2,3-butanediol, acetoin, dimethyl disulfide, and geosmin, highlighting their convergence on jasmonic a

Besides lipo-chitooligosaccharidic Nod factors (NFs), rhizobial exo-oligosaccharides (EOS), derived from exo-polysaccharides (EPS), are symbiotic signals that promote nodule formation on legume roots. However, plant genes regulated by EOS signaling remain unidentified. Here, we used purified EPS and the rhizobial glycanase ExoK to produce EOS in vitro. EOS was applied to Lotus japonicus roots to identify genome-wide gene expression changes. Mutants of Sinorhizobium sp. NGR234 and L. japonicus were used to investigate the symbiotic roles of EOS and NFs. Transcriptomic analysis showed that EOS i

Phytophotodermatitis, a condition that results from sequential skin exposure to phototoxic chemicals contained within plants, followed by exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation, has been described with several plants and plant-based foods, namely members of the Moraceaefamily, which include Ficus carica L. This tree's branches, leaves, and fruit skin exude a milky sap or latex containing proteolytic enzymes and furocoumarins known to be photoirritants, easily absorbed upon skin contact. Oxygen-dependent and independent toxic reactions subsequent to sun exposure promote cell membrane damage an

The rhizosphere is a living physical space that is constantly evolving and is characterized by a complex interplay between beneficial microbes, pathogens, and plants, mediated by molecular and ecological interactions. These three-way relationships constitute a rhizosphere "triangular warfare system," which controls plant health, nutrient uptake, disease resistance, and plant resilience. This review provides a mechanistic overview of the molecular, metabolic and ecological processes underlying these tripartite interactions. We discuss how plants integrate pattern-triggered immunity (PTI), effec

The effect of two wetland plants, Typha latifolia L. (cattail) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud (common reed), on the fate of Cr(VI) in wetland sediments was investigated using greenhouse bench-scale microcosm experiments. The removal of Cr(VI) was monitored based on the vertical profiles of aqueous Cr(VI) in the sediments. The Cr(VI) removal rates were estimated taking into account plant transpiration, which was found to significantly concentrate dissolved species in the sediments. After correcting for evapotranspiration, the actual Cr(VI) removal rates were significantly higher

Salicylic acid (SA) and its glucoside (SAG) were detected in xylem sap of Brassica napus by HPLC-MS. Concentrations of SA and SAG in xylem sap from the root and hypocotyl of the plant, and in extracts of shoots above the hypocotyl, increased after infection with the vascular pathogen Verticillium longisporum. Both concentrations were correlated with disease severity assessed as the reduction in shoot length. Furthermore, SAG levels in shoot extracts were correlated with the amount of V. longisporum DNA in the hypocotyls. Although the concentration of SAG (but not SA) in xylem sap of infected p
