Immunohistochemical staining and histochemical approach for mucin were applied in studying 58 cases of colorectal adenomas. Among them, there were 13 cases of multiple adenomas (polyps), 5 cases of inflammatory polyps and 5 cases of juvenile polyps. The dietary implications of feeding sub-lethal doses of extracted and purified lectin from lima bean were assessed in weanling rats using changes in relative organ weights, pancreatic and intestinal trypsin and chymotrypsin activities as the response indices. Chromatographically separated fractions of a proteolytic digest of wheat gliadin were assayed for cytotoxic properties using cultured human embryonic intestinal, lung, kidney, adrenal, and HEp-2 cells. In all cell types noxious effects were observed microscopically over a 24 h period. The most active fraction was that previously shown to produce xylose malabsorption in subjects with coeliac disease, disruption of lysosomes, and inhibition of morphological recovery of cultured mucosa from a patient on a gluten-free diet.

Cotton bract tannin, a major organic component of cotton dust, was tested for mitogenic activity upon human T lymphocytes. Tannin caused polyclonal activation of human T lymphocytes in vitro. The pattern of T-cell response to tannin was similar to the pattern seen in lymphocytes stimulated with the well-known plant lectin T-cell mitogens, PHA and ConA. The response to tannin was shown to be dependent upon tannin dose and presence of monocytes. Antimicrobial resistance is currently one of the greatest threats to global health, food security, and development. In this aspect, medicinal plants have been studied to support the development of viable alternatives to prevent and treat infectious diseases. This study aimed to perform a review of the literature comprising the antimicrobial activity of vegetable species from Brazilian biomes. We selected 67 original scientific publications about extracts, fractions, or isolated molecules from plants in the Brazilian biomes, published between 2016 and 2020 in Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Scielo.
