Ground-edged cutting tools are widely regarded as technological hallmarks of early agriculture in North China, commonly hypothesized to have been developed primarily for cereal harvesting. Yet the functional foundations of this innovation remain insufficiently tested. This study integrates use-wear and microfossil analyses of 140 stone tools from the Peiligang site, with experimental data, to reassess their roles within long-term trajectories of technological change from the Late Paleolithic to the Early Neolithic. Upper Paleolithic flaked tools were multifunctional implements used for process

Vachellia gummifera (Willd.) Kyal. & Boatwr. is a medicinal plant endemic to Morocco that has no documented studies on its chemical composition. In this study, the chemical composition of the water/methanol (4 : 1) extracts of air-dried leaf and stem samples of Moroccan V. gummifera was determined using UHPLC-MS and NMR. In total, over 100 metabolites were identified in our study. Pinitol was the major compound in both the leaf and stem extracts, being significantly more abundant in the former. Asparagine and 3-hydroxyheteroendrin were the second most abundant compounds in the stem and leaf ex

Hop cones are well-known for their antimicrobial properties, attributed to their specialized metabolites. Thus, this study aimed to determine the in vitro antifungal activity of different hop parts, including by-products such as leaves and stems, and some metabolites against Venturia inaequalis, the causal agent of apple scab. For each plant part, two types of extracts, a crude hydro-ethanolic extract and a dichloromethane sub-extract, were tested on spore germination of two strains with different sensitivities to triazole fungicides. Both extracts of cones, leaves and stems were able to inhib

This study evaluated the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on the growth, heavy metal accumulation, and phytoremediation performance of Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mahasarakham) under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stress. Salicylic acid was applied using two methods: grass-cutting soaking (S) and soaking combined with watering (SW). Both SA treatments significantly (p < 0.05) improved root and shoot growth and biomass compared with the control under both Cd-Pb co-contaminated and uncontaminated conditions. SA also enhanced leaf phytochemical composition, particularly under metal stress. C

Trichomes are well-known efficient plant defense mechanisms to limit arthropod herbivory, especially in Solanaceae. The present study aims to evaluate the impact of trichome types on the development, survival and dispersal of Tetranychus urticae, and the phytoseiid predatory mite Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) recki. Six Solanum lycopersicum cultivars and two wild Solanum species, S. cheesmaniae and S. peruvianum, presenting contrasting densities and types of trichomes, were considered. Cultivars and species were characterized by counting each trichome type on leaves, petioles and stems. Mites stuc

The circadian clock enables plants to adapt to ambient temperature fluctuations. In Arabidopsis thaliana, CIRCADIAN CLOCK ASSOCIATED 1 (CCA1) generates distinct isoforms via alternative splicing (AS), but how this mediates clock stability under high temperature (HT) remains unclear. Here, we show that CCA1 precisely discriminates HT gradients through AS: under moderate HT (28°C-37°C), CCA1βab isoforms (CCA1βa/βb) are upregulated, with CCA1βb specifically accumulating at 37°C, while CCA1α remains stable; at extreme HT (42°C), CCA1 is globally upregulated without isoform specificity. The HT resp

Copper (Cu) homeostasis is integral to many plant physiological processes, including lignification of plant cell walls. This link occurs through Cu's role as a cofactor in the apoplastic laccase enzymes that oxidize monolignols that then polymerize to form the hydrophobic lignin polymer, which provides rigidity and strength to the water transport system. In this study, we investigated the effect of Cu deficiency on lignin content and chemistry in poplar stems. We also examined the effect of Cu deficiency on the stiffness of stem wood and the hydraulic properties of leaves. Cu deficiency result

Flavonoids are secondary metabolites that have significant roles in plant defense and human nutrition. Glucosyltransferases (GTs) catalyze the transfer of sugars from high energy sugar donors to other substrates. Several different secondary product GTs exist in the tissues of grapefruit making it a model plant for studying their structure and function. The goal of this investigation was to determine the expression patterns of seven putative secondary product GTs during grapefruit growth and development by quantifying mRNA expression levels in the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and mature fruit

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Toxicity of Cr to plants depends on its valence state: Cr(VI) is highly toxic and mobile whereas Cr(III) is less toxic. Since plants lack a specific transport system for Cr, it is taken up by carriers of essential ions such as sulfate or iron. Toxic effects of Cr on plant growth and development include alterations in the germination process as well as in the growth of roots, stems and leaves, which may affect total dry matter productio

High-density planting is a critical strategy for maximizing maize (Zea mays L.) yield. The ideotype for maize dense planting requires a shade-tolerant traits characterized by semi-dwarf, sturdy stems, and smart canopy structure (termed 3S traits), which collectively enhance logging resistance and light capture efficiency. However, the genetic basis of these 3S traits regulation in maize remains unclear. Here, we identify Shade-responsive MicroProtein Architecture Remodeling Target 1 (SMART1) as a pivotal regulator that enhances 3S traits, manifesting as semi-dwarf plant height, robust stems an

Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (G. uralensis) stems are an underutilized agricultural by-product rich in polysaccharides, phenolics, and flavonoids. This study systematically compared enzymatic and high-temperature steam treatments for improving their functional value. Both treatments altered plant matrix architecture but exhibited distinct effects. Enzymatic processing largely preserved the original color and induced moderate cell wall loosening, whereas steam treatment caused more extensive tissue disruption, porous structure formation, and thermal browning. Enzymatic treatment increased extra

In recent years, symptoms suggestive of viral infection have commonly occurred in Gynura bicolor in China. However, no viral genome infecting G. bicolor has been reported. This study applied high-throughput sequencing to plant samples with chlorotic spots in Sanya, Hainan. Viral sequences were confirmed using RT-PCR and RACE. Complete genomes of vanilla distortion mosaic virus (VDMV, Potyvirus vanillae) and an unknown virus were obtained. Sequence analysis indicated that the VDMV isolate from the G. bicolor is a novel variant. It shares 81.13% identity with its closest known strain. The unknow

Sugarcane smut, caused by the fungus Sporisorium scitamineum (Sydow), significantly affects sugarcane crops worldwide. Infected plants develop whip-like structures known as sori. Significant variations in these whip lengths are commonly observed, but the physiological and molecular differences causing these morphological differences remain poorly documented. To address this, we employed conventional microbe isolation, metagenomic, and metabolomic techniques to investigate smut-infected sugarcane stems and whips of varying lengths. Metagenomics analysis revealed a diverse fungal community in th
