Role of transgenic plants in agriculture and biopharming.

At present, environmental degradation and the consistently growing population are two main problems on the planet earth. Fulfilling the needs of this growing population is quite difficult from the limited arable land available on the globe. Although there are legal, social and political barriers to the utilization of biotechnology, advances in this field have substantially improved agriculture and human life to a great extent. One of the vital tools of biotechnology is genetic engineering (GE) which is used to modify plants, animals and microorganisms according to desired needs. In fact, genet…

Evolutionary genomics of LysM genes in land plants.

BACKGROUND: The ubiquitous LysM motif recognizes peptidoglycan, chitooligosaccharides (chitin) and, presumably, other structurally-related oligosaccharides. LysM-containing proteins were first shown to be involved in bacterial cell wall degradation and, more recently, were implicated in perceiving chitin (one of the established pathogen-associated molecular patterns) and lipo-chitin (nodulation factors) in flowering plants. However, the majority of LysM genes in plants remain functionally uncharacterized and the evolutionary history of complex LysM genes remains elusive. RESULTS: We show that…

Antibacterial properties of traditionally used Indian medicinal plants.

In search of broad-spectrum antibacterial activity from traditionally used Indian medicinal plants, 66 ethanolic plant extracts were screened against nine different bacteria. Of these, 39 extracts demonstrated activity against six or more test bacteria. Twelve extracts showing broad-spectrum activity were tested against specific multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESbetaL)-producing enteric bacteria. In vitro efficacy was expressed in terms of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of plant extract…

Sulfite oxidase protects plants against sulfur dioxide toxicity.

The gaseous pollutant SO(2) readily reacts with water to form sulfite that impacts deleteriously on animal and plant health. By modulating the level of sulfite oxidase (SO) that catalyzes the transformation of sulfites to the non-toxic sulfate, we show that Arabidopsis and tomato plants can be rendered resistant or susceptible to SO(2)/sulfite. Plants in which sulfite oxidase expression was abrogated by RNA interference (RNAi) accumulated relatively less sulfate after SO(2) application and showed enhanced induction of senescence and wounding-associated transcripts, leaf necrosis and chlorophyl…

The occurrence of hormesis in plants and algae.

This paper evaluated the frequency, magnitude and dose/concentration range of hormesis in four species: The aquatic plant Lemna minor, the micro-alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the two terrestrial plants Tripleurospermum inodorum and Stellaria media exposed to nine herbicides and one fungicide and binary mixtures thereof. In total 687 dose-response curves were included in the database. The study showed that both the frequency and the magnitude of the hormetic response depended on the endpoint being measured. Dry weight at harvest showed a higher frequency and a larger hormetic respons…

Trichloroethylene oxidative metabolism in plants: the trichloroethanol pathway.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a widespread and persistent environmental contaminant. Recently, plants, poplar trees in particular, have been investigated as a tool to remove TCE from soil and groundwater. The metabolism of TCE in plants is being investigated for two reasons: one, plant uptake and metabolism represent an important aspect of the environmental fate of the contaminant; two, metabolism pattern and metabolite identification will help assess the applicability of phytoremediation. It was previously shown that TCE metabolites in plants are similar to ones that result from cytochrome P450-…

Phytodetoxification of hazardous organomercurials by genetically engineered plants.

Methylmercury is a highly toxic, organic derivative found in mercury-polluted wetlands and coastal sediments worldwide. Though commonly present at low concentrations in the substrate, methylmercury can biomagnify to concentrations that poison predatory animals and humans. In the interest of developing an in situ detoxification strategy, a model plant system was transformed with bacterial genes (merA for mercuric reductase and merB for organomercurial lyase) for an organic mercury detoxification pathway. Arabidopsis thaliana plants expressing both genes grow on 50-fold higher methylmercury conc…

[Effects of calcinogenic plants--qualitative and quantitative evaluation].

Different research methods demonstrated the presence of variable quantities of Vitamin D as well as its metabolites in calcinogenic plants. Most of the experiments indicated that the active component most probably should be the metabolite 1,25 (OH)2D3 linked as a glycoside. By this research it was achieved to evaluate the presence of elements with Vitamin D-like activity in the calcinogenic plants Solanum malacoxylon, Cestrum diurnum, Trisetum flavescens and Nierembergia veitchii by testing different extracts of the above plants by oral application to rachitic chicks within the research model …

SA, JA, ethylene, and disease resistance in plants.

Exciting advances have been made during the past year: isolating mutants affecting plant disease resistance, cloning genes involved in the regulation of various defense responses, and characterizing novel defense signaling pathways. Recent studies have demonstrated that jasmonic acid and ethylene are important for the induction of nonspecific disease resistance through signaling pathways that are distinct from the classical systemic acquired resistance response pathway regulated by salicylic acid.

Immediate and delayed contact hypersensitivity to verbena plants.

Plants from the Verbenaceae family may cause contact dermatitis of unknown nature. This report describes 2 cases of allergic reactions to the Verbena species. A teenage boy developed an anaphylactic allergic response following contact with the leaves of Verbena hybrida. Characterization of the patient's specific IgE response to Verbena hybrida, using Western blots and autoradiography, identified the specific 62000 Dalton allergen present in the verbena leaves to which the patient reacted. This is the first report of an IgE-mediated immediate contact hypersensitivity reaction to Verbena hybrida…

The genetics of metal tolerance in vascular plants.

In many parts of the world soils are detrimental to plant growth owing to elevated levels of metal ions, caused either by natural processes or by the result of man's activities. Many plants have evolved ecotypes or varieties that are able to grow more-or-less normally on these soils. This paper reviews our knowledge of the genetics of this phenomenon. The nature of tolerance and the problems of its measurement are discussed. Tolerance is frequently measured by an index produced by comparing growth in a contaminated environment with growth in a control environment. It is argued that this measur…

Characteristics of biological aerosols in dairy processing plants.

The viable aerosol in dairy processing plant environments was characterized by using an Andersen six-stage sieve sampler and a Reuter centrifugal sampler. Artificially introduced Serratia marcescens were detected in the air during drain flooding and after rinsing the floor with a pressured water hose, thus illustrating the ability of a specific microorganism to be disseminated from drains and wet surfaces via physical disruption activities often observed in food plants. Once a high concentration of wet viable aerosol was generated, it took 40 or more min to return to the background level in th…
