BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sleep apnea-related autonomic responses may increase cardiac arrhythmias. Ablation, cardioversion, and pharmacologic therapies for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) could benefit from adjunctive oral appliance therapy with a mouth shield (OAT+) compared to auto-adjusting positive airway pressure (APAP).

Venous hemodynamics were evaluated by simultaneous strain gauge- and photo-plethysmographic techniques in 40 normal limbs (normal group), 74 limbs with primary varicose veins (varicosis group) and 28 limbs with postthrombotic syndrome (thrombosis group). Leg ulcers are a well recognized complication of sickle cell disease that has been attributed to venous insufficiency. We studied 16 patients with sickle cell disease and active ulcers using venous pulse volume recordings and photoplethysmography (Doppler studies). Based on hemodynamic monitoring, all 16 patients exhibited rapid refilling times, findings that imply venous insufficiency but are also compatible with high-output syndrome or arteriovenous shunting. Diaphragmatic flutter is a rare phenomenon characterized by high-frequency, pulsatile contractions of the thorax and abdominal wall associated with breathlessness. We describe the case of a patient previously treated for status asthmaticus who had physical signs of diaphragmatic flutter. Respiratory inductive plethysmography confirmed the diagnosis, simplifying medical management.

The purpose of this communication is to review obstructive and central breathing abnormalities that may occur during sleep, such as obstructive sleep apnea, and Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Emphasis is placed on noninvasive monitoring of the breathing pattern and intrapleural pressure swings by respiratory and surface inductive plethysmography, respectively, which establish the diagnosis of these abnormal breathing patterns.

The method of tensometric universal occlusion plethysmography was used to determine the arterial and venous hemodynamics in 106 patients with ulcer disease and chronic gastroduodenitis with symptoms of ulcer disease. Reliable changes of the peripheral blood flow were revealed during exacerbations of the disease and clinico-morphological remission. The changes are caused by disorders in the system of regulation of the peripheral hemodynamics.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the changes in end-expiratory lung volume during an oxygenation-guided stepwise recruitment procedure in elective high-frequency ventilation. We hypothesized that high continuous distending pressure impedes pulmonary blood flow as evidenced by reduced lung volume measurements using respiratory inductive plethysmography. Measurement of lung volumes at end expiratory level and assessment of ventilation inhomogeneity is important for respiratory management in infants with lung disease. This study compared multiple breath nitrogen washout was compared with body plethysmography to measure functional residual capacity in infants and assessed ventilation inhomogeneity using mean dilution numbers and alveolar based gas dilution numbers.
