Pulmonary complication is a rare manifestation of childhood malaria and isolated pleural effusion without pulmonary edema has never been reported in children. We report here an 11-year-old boy who suffered from cerebral malaria and massive right pleural effusion. The patient was treated with intravenous artesunate, albumin, and other supportive treatments. He recovered completely after eight days. The clinical and laboratory courses suggested that the plasma leakage played a role in the pathogenesis of pleural effusion.

The case history of a 77-year-old lady with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia is presented. The diagnosis was difficult due to the simultaneous presence of a pleural effusion and congestive heart failure. Radiological findings and treatment are discussed.

A 61-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of a long history of productive coughing. A chest roentgenogram and CT scan showed a right-sided pleural effusion. The effusion fluid was blood-stained but showed no cytological evidence of malignancy. Marked eosinophilia was found in blood and in the pleural effusion fluid. Ouchterlony's double-diffusion test done with the patients serum and pleural effusion fluid in agarose showed specific bands toward Dirofilaria immitis antigen, and this specificity was confirmed with an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay inhibition test. The final diag…

This case report concerns an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the testis in a 31-yr-old white male patient who underwent radical left orchiectomy, followed by combined irradiation and chemotherapy, and who 2 yr later presented with dyspnea at rest, nonproductive cough, and lower back pain for 1 wk. Chest radiographs demonstrated a bilateral pleural effusion and diffuse infiltrating lesion of the pleurae, mimicking a mesothelioma. The pleural fluid displayed noncohesive, malignant, small, round cells about 2-5 times larger than mature lymphocytes. They had large, darkly stained, pleomorphic nuclei…

A 33-year-old man with a two-year history of asthma and sinusitis presented with wheezing, pleuritis, bilateral pleural effusions, and patchy basilar infiltrates on chest roentgenogram. Laboratory studies revealed peripheral blood eosinophilia, and pulmonary function studies showed an obstructive pattern which was bronchodilator responsive. Thoracocentesis yielded an acidotic exudative effusion with low glucose, low C3, eosinophilia, and a markedly increased rheumatoid factor. Open lung biopsy revealed extensive eosinophilic interstitial pneumonitis with necrotizing eosinophilic vasculitis. Al…

In order to discriminate between malignant and benign effusions, the values of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), ferritin, beta2-microglobulin … activity in tuberculous effusion was significantly higher than that resulting from other causes of pleural effusion.

The first probable human case of pulmonary anisakiasis is reported. A 37-year-old Japanese person in California developed pleural effusion after consumption of raw salmon at a seafood restaurant in San Francisco. A marked eosinophilia was noted in the blood and pleural exudate. The patient was tested for helminthic infections by intradermal, complement fixation, Ouchterlony, and immunoelectrophoresis tests using antigens of various worm species. A specific precipitin band was recognized only with Anisakis (Type I larvae) antigen.

Eosinophilic pleural effusion (EPE) is a rare pleural disorder characterized by a significant proportion of eosinophils in the pleural fluid. Its etiologies are diverse and include malignancy, infections, pulmonary embolism, drug-induced reactions, and parasitic diseases. Pleural involvement in toxocariasis is rare and may pose diagnostic challenges, particularly in tuberculosis-endemic regions. We report the case of a 67-year-old male farmer from a rural area who presented with progressive dyspnea, right-sided chest pain, fever, and general deterioration. Physical examination revealed signs c…

Malignant tumors are often associated with eosinophilic pleural effusion. Here, we encountered a case of interleukin-5 (IL-5)-producing malignant pleural mesothelioma with eosinophilic pleural effusion. The patient was a 50-year-old male. He had a history of a cough for several weeks and had visited a local doctor. Left pleural effusion was noted, and the patient was referred to our hospital. He was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma by pleural biopsy, with eosinophilic pleural effusion. IL-5 in the pleural effusion increased, and tumor cells were IL-5-positive by immunostaining. Th…

A 74-year-old man with malignant pleural effusion due to recurrent gastric cancer underwent a failed pleurodesis. He subsequently underwent subcutaneous implantable pleural port implantation surgery followed by outpatient chemotherapy for 1 month. His disease progressed and he was unable to go to the hospital. He requested home care, so a nurse practitioner visited his home and drained the pleural effusion from the subcutaneous implantable pleural port. About 3 weeks after starting home care, he died at home. Pleurodesis is a common treatment for malignant pleural effusion; however, if a patie…
