Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that typically originate from the visceral pleura. We report two cases of giant pleural SFTs involving the left hemithorax. The first case involved a 59-year-old woman presenting with two synchronous tumors, whereas the second case concerned a 39-year-old man with a single large intrathoracic mass. The coexistence of two distinct SFTs within the same hemithorax, as observed in the first patient, is exceptionally rare and may suggest a multicentric pleural origin or intrapleural dissemination. Both patients presented w

The prevalence of multiple primary malignant neoplasms in a single patient is reported in a wide variation. The co-existence of malignant mesothelioma and pulmonary carcinoma is a rare entity. Herein, we reported a 60-year-old man who was a retired employee and heavy smoker. He had a suspicious history of asbestos exposure. He complained of chest pain and computerized tomography revealed a mass in the lower lobe of left lung. The patient underwent a left lower lobectomy and was diagnosed as pulmonary adenocarcinoma. During follow-up two years after surgery, the patient complained of dyspnea an

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare neoplasms. We report two cases of giant SFTP treated by surgical resection. One of these was enormous (30 x 19 x 18 cm, weight: 4,050 g) and occupied the entire left pleural cavity with complete lung collapse and contralateral mediastinal shift. Both tumors were removed en bloc. The patients had no postoperative complications. Surgical treatment is curative in most patients; resection must be complete because of the possibility of recurrence and metastasis.

This study was undertaken to determine the histopathological spectrum and clinical profile of thymic neoplasms at a tertiary referral care centre. A total of 96 thymectomy specimens were received during the study period (1992-2004), which consisted of 54 neoplasms and 42 benign lesions. Among the neoplasms there were 48 thymic epithelial tumors, 3 thymolipomas and 3 thymic carcinoids. The former comprised of 36 male (75%) and 12 female patients (25%) ranging in age from 2-70 years (mean 37 years). Among paraneoplastic syndromes in thymic epithelial tumours, 27 out of 48 (56.25%) cases were ass

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic infectious disease caused by Actinomyces spp., characterized by an indolent and slowly progressive course. It represents a diagnostic challenge since its nonspecific clinical features often lead to misdiagnosis, mimicking pathologies such as solid neoplasms, active tuberculosis, nocardiosis, fungal infections, or other granulomatous diseases. This study describes a 56-year-old male with abdominal and thoracic pain, weight loss, fever, and dyspnea, over a two-week period. Imaging revealed the presence of hepatic abscesses and right-sided pleural effusion. Actino

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon tumour that represents 5%-10% of salivary gland tumours and 1% of all head and neck malignancies. It is characterised by a protracted clinical course with late metastasis and poor long-term prognosis. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman presenting with pulmonary and pleural metastases, on the background of ACC of the floor of mouth, which had been treated 4 years ago with surgical excision and radiotherapy. Cytological evaluation of the pleural effusion showed exfoliated ACC tumour cells. Despite palliative chemotherapy, the patient developed

Outsized tumours of the mediastinum are always present a challenge for the thoracic surgeon. This is a case report of a giant malignant Triton tumour occupying almost the entire right hemithorax. The patient presented in the accident and emergency (A&E) with severe dyspnoea. He referred a history of surgically excised fibromyxomatous sarcoma of the left lower limb with 2 local recurrences. The imaging studies revealed apart the giant neoplasm, total right lung atelectasis and pleural effusion. After diagnostic evacuation of the pleural effusion and bronchoscopy, the patient operated through a

INTRODUCTION: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a malignant of mesodermal neoplasm and arises from multipotential mesothelial or subserosal cells of the pleura, pericardium and peritoneum.
CASE: A seventy five year-old male patient was admitted with chest and lower limb pain. He was a heavy smoker and exposed to environmental asbestos in his childhood. PET-CT scans showed multiple pathological FDG uptakes in lungs and other organs. Biopsies performed from lung and anterior thigh muscles were reported as epitheloid type malignant pleural mesothelioma.
DISCUSSION: We emphasize that unexp

We report a 58-year-old male with localized pleural adenocarcinoma, the origin of which was not identified. The disk-shaped pleural tumor was 8 x 6 x 2 cm in size and involved the left upper chest wall including the ribs. A fine needle biopsy showed adenocarcinoma, but whole body survey revealed no neoplasm other than the chest wall tumor. The left chest wall resection was followed by the left pleuropneumonectomy, because a few disseminations were identified in the visceral pleura. Pathological examinations showed no primary tumor in the lung. Immunohistochemical examinations suggested that mi

Signet-ring cells are morphologically defined by the presence of a large intracytoplasmic vacuole that compresses and displaces the nucleus to the periphery. In most cases, these cells are associated with adenocarcinomas of various locations, and with non-epithelial neoplasms. To date, less than 20 cases of squamous cell carcinoma with signet-ring morphology have been described, mainly located on the skin. We present the case of a 73-year-old male with pleural effusion and a left lower lobe mass. The cytological study of the pleural effusion allowed the diagnosis of metastasis of squamous cell

CASE DETAILS: A 14-year-old female cat presented with signs of respiratory distress. Pleural fluid was found on radiographic assessment. Cytologic evaluation of the fluid revealed malignant melanocytosis. The cat had a previous history of a recurrent malignant melanoma near the base of the right ear. Due to declining clinical condition, the cat was euthanized.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cutaneous malignant melanomas (or melanosarcomas) are uncommon neoplasms in cats, and knowledge is limited. As far as the authors are aware, there are no previous reports in the veterinary literature of malignant

Computed tomography was used to examine the three paraspinal interfaces (lines), consisting of the right and left paraspinal areas and the prespinal area in the lower thorax in 20 children. The abnormal CT findings were correlated with plain radiographic findings. The various disease contributing to paraspinal abnormality included malignant and benign neoplasm and inflammatory disease. Neuroblastoma was the most common entity. Fourteen of 20 patients had paraspinal masses representing either metastasis or lymphoma. Four had small pleural effusions and two had a combination of small pleural eff

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive malignant neoplasm of the pleura related to asbestos exposure. Despite recent advances in therapy for MPM, the prognosis remains poor, with considerable treatment associated morbidity. Radiological assessment plays a central role in the timely identification and subsequent management of treatment related complications in MPM. This review highlights common and uncommon complications associated with and encountered in the post treatment phase.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which computed tomographic findings are associated with high-risk thymic epithelial tumors and a poor prognosis.
METHODS: Computed tomographic findings of thymic epithelial neoplasms were retrospectively evaluated in 75 patients diagnosed with thymic tumor between January 1997 and October 2003. We analyzed the correlation of the computed tomographic findings, histological subtype according to the World Health Organization classification, and the prognosis.
RESULTS: There were 34 with type A approximately B1 tumor and 41 with type B2 approximately C tumor. On multiple

SFT is a rare spindle cell neoplasm arising mostly at pleural and in rare cases at extrapleural sites. Histology and immunohistology are diagnostic tools. It is crucial to consider SFT as differential diagnosis in pulmonary nodules since they often remain clinically silent until they reach large dimension and to proceed with curative resection without delay. It is essential to follow up patients for a long period of time as recurrence may occur.

Under physiological conditions the pleural cavities contain a few millilitres of a fluid film with a protein content of about 1.7 g%. Because of the different capillary pressure, there is a regular flow of fluid from the parietal pleura to the visceral pleura. In cases of increased hydrostatic pressure or reduced colloid osmotic pressure in the absence of pleural disease, transudation takes place; in disturbances of permeability resulting from various types of inflammation, neoplasms or vascular disorders, and in disturbances of lymph backflow, exudates are formed. A pleural effusion is easily

Sclerosing pneumocytoma (SP) is a rare primary lung tumor. Typical carcinoids (TCs) count for 2% of lung malignancies. A description of a combined neoplasm of SP with a nodal and pleural metastasized TC has, to our knowledge, never been published. A 57-year-old actively smoking woman received a diagnosis of a lesion in the left lower lobe via a screening CT scan for rheumatoid arthritis. A fluorodeoxyglucose-PET scan confirmed a 21 × 26 × 16 mm (standardized uptake maximum value, 3.0), well-circumscribed round lesion with calcification, which was thought to be most probably benign. No mediasti

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects young men. DSRCT often presents as multiple nodules on the serosal surface and is histologically categorized as a small round cell tumor. However, the cytological spectrum of DSRCT is not fully understood because of its rarity. Here, we report an unusual case of DSRCT that showed spheres of cells without stromal cores in pleural fluid cytology material, a finding that is typically associated with metastatic adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma. The specimen from a simultaneous needle biopsy show

Asbestos causes four diseases in humans: Lung fibrosis (asbestosis) follows heavy exposure and, in industrialized countries, is mainly a relic of past working conditions. The risk of pleural fibrosis and plaques is likely to be linearly dependent from time since first exposure and is present for all types of asbestos fibres. The diagnostic uncertainties regarding pleural plaques and the substantial degree of misclassification make it difficult to precisely estimate the shape of the dose-response relationship. The risk of lung cancer seems to be linearly related to cumulative asbestos exposure,

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mesothelioma is an infrequent neoplasm with a poor prognosis that is related to exposure to asbestos and whose peak incidence in Europe is estimated from 2020. Its diagnosis is complex; imaging techniques and the performance of invasive pleural techniques being essential for pathological confirmation. The different diagnostic yields of these invasive techniques are collected in the medical literature. The present work consisted of reviewing how the definitive diagnosis of mesothelioma cases in our centre was reached to check if there was concordance with the data in
