Pulmonary mucormycosis complicated by necrotizing pneumonia secondary to an obstructive endobronchial tumor-like lesion: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare but life-threatening invasive fungal infection, most commonly affecting immunocompromised individuals, especially those with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) represents the second most frequent clinical form after rhino-orbital-cerebral disease and carries a high mortality rate. Diagnosis is often delayed because its clinical and radiological manifestations overlap with other pulmonary infections and malignancies. Necrotizing pneumonia secondary to endobronchial mucormycosis is exceptionally rare, representing a distinct and se

Conservative Management of Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infection With Cervical Necrotizing Fasciitis-Spectrum Disease and Pneumonia in a Healthy Young Adult.

Invasive Group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections are life-threatening conditions classically manifesting as necrotizing fasciitis or severe pneumonia, but their simultaneous occurrence in a previously healthy adult is extremely rare. While necrotizing fasciitis typically mandates urgent surgery, this report highlights a case of concurrent cervical necrotizing fasciitis-spectrum disease and pneumonia successfully managed through a conservative, non-surgical approach. A 29-year-old previously healthy Japanese male presented with a two-day history of fever, sore throat, and a maculopapular rash,

Bee sting-induced hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae infection causing fulminant necrotizing fasciitis: case report and narrative review.

Necrotizing fasciitis induced by hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) represents a rare yet life-threatening soft tissue infection, with an increasing incidence observed in recent years. This condition is characterized by rapid progression and a high mortality rate, thereby posing a serious risk to patient health. This article presents a case of acute necrotizing fasciitis of the right upper limb caused by an infection of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae following a bee sting. Additionally, it reviews the current research on K. pneumoniae-associated necrotizing fasciitis, emphasizing its path

Surfactant for a Patient with Refractory Pyopneumothorax and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Due to Pneumococcal Necrotizing Pneumonia Complicated by a Bronchopleural Fistula.

Background: Necrotizing pneumonia rarely occurs in children, but when it does it can be complicated by bronchopleural fistula, empyema, pneumothorax, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Antimicrobial therapy is the cornerstone of its management; however, surgery is necessary in some cases. Ideally, surgical interventions are kept to a minimum, but this is not always possible if there is a mass effect from air and fluid in the pleural space, pulmonary necrosis leading to massive hemoptysis, uncontrolled sepsis, or difficulties with assisted ventilation. Case Presentation: He

Life-Threatening Necrotizing Pneumonia with Panton-Valentine Leukocidin-Producing, Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in a Healthy Male Co-Infected with Influenza B.

A previously healthy male was rushed into a hospital critically ill with confusion, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome only 43 h after having a normal chest X-ray and with blood samples showing only minimally elevated C-reactive protein. Two days earlier, the patient had returned to his home country, the Faroe Islands, from a 10-day work trip aboard a Scandinavian ship in Colombia. The diagnosis turned out to be an influenza B infection and necrotizing pneumonia with Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-producing methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA). It was influenza se

An unusual presentation of necrotizing pneumonia caused by foreign body retention in a 20-month-old child: A case report and literature review.

Necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is a rare but serious complication that occurs after foreign body retention. We report a case of severe NP in an infant caused by foreign body retention in the airway with no choking history. After a timely tracheoscopy and effective antibiotic treatment, her initial clinical symptoms were alleviated. However, she subsequently exhibited pulmonary manifestations of necrotizing pneumonia. To reduce the risk of NP from foreign body aspiration, for patients with airway obstruction and asymmetrical opacity of both lungs, timely diagnostic bronchoscopic evaluation is essen

Point-of-Care Ultrasound-Guided Management of Fulminant Influenza A(H3) with Staphylococcus aureus Necrotizing Pneumonia and Acute Cardiopulmonary Failure: A Case Report.

Background: Seasonal influenza is typically a self-limiting illness in healthy young adults, but severe and potentially life-threatening complications can occur. Influenza A infection may predispose patients to secondary bacterial infections, including Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia and bacteremia, which can rapidly progress to necrotizing pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and cardiovascular dysfunction. Case Presentation: We report the case of a young adult with influenza A(H3) infection complicated by Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, necrotizing pneumonia, ARDS, and bi

Pediatric necrotizing pneumonia caused by mixed infection with influenza A virus and Panton-Valentine Leucocidin-producing Staphylococcus aureus: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Mixed infection with influenza A virus (IAV) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a serious concern in children. S. aureus, particularly Panton-Valentine Leucocidin (PVL)-producing strains, is a known cause of severe, necrotizing complications. We reported three cases of severe necrotizing pneumonia caused by PVL-positive S. aureus and IAV infection from March to April in 2023. CASE PRESENTATION: Three previously healthy children presented with acute onset of high fever and dyspnea following IAV infection. Microbiological workup confirmed mixed infection with PVL-positive S. a

A case of community-acquired Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) necrotizing pneumonia successfully treated with two anti-MRSA drugs.

A 22-year-old Vietnamese man was referred to our hospital owing to cough, dyspnea, and difficulty moving. The patient was diagnosed with community-acquired Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia and necrotizing pneumonia. Treatment involved vancomycin (VCM) and meropenem, and the MRSA bacteremia improved. However, lung tissue destruction progressed. Therefore, linezolid was added to the VCM regimen, and this intervention led to the patient's recovery, and he was discharged from the hospital. Here, we report a case in which the patient

A case of a 22-month-old boy with necrotizing pneumonia presenting with leukaemoid reaction misdiagnosed as leukaemia: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing pneumonia and hyperleukocytosis, to the extent of that seen in leukaemia, is a rarely reported presentation. The commonest trigger of such a presentation is an inflammatory process caused by an overwhelming infection which leads to bone marrow irritation. However, the misdiagnosis of this clinical entity as leukaemia should be avoided at all costs so as to avoid the anxiety associated with a diagnosis of cancer, both to the patients and their families. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 22-month-old boy who was referred to our Pediatric Oncology Unit (POU

A case of Klebsiella pneumoniae hypervirulent phenotype causing necrotizing fasciitis of chest wall: A mono-microbial entity emerging in the Indian subcontinent.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall or upper torso is a rare clinical entity. Monomicrobial Klebsiella pneumoniae as a causative agent of necrotizing fasciitis is far less common than the polymicrobial etiology. Here, we report a case of community-onset pyogenic necrotizing fasciitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae in an immunocompetent male of tribal background from the rural area of Jharkhand, India. The hypermucoviscous phenotype of the bacterium causing necrotizing fasciitis has been infrequently reported from the Indian subcontinent to date. The existence of multidrug resistant trait

Paneth cell ablation in the presence of Klebsiella pneumoniae induces necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)-like injury in the small intestine of immature mice.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in premature infants. During NEC pathogenesis, bacteria are able to penetrate innate immune defenses and invade the intestinal epithelial layer, causing subsequent inflammation and tissue necrosis. Normally, Paneth cells appear in the intestinal crypts during the first trimester of human pregnancy. Paneth cells constitute a major component of the innate immune system by producing multiple antimicrobial peptides and proinflammatory mediators. To better understand the possible role of Paneth cell disruption in NEC, we

Two Cases of Intrafamilial Transmission of Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Producing Both PVL and TSST-1 Causing Fatal Necrotizing Pneumonia and Sepsis.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus produces numerous toxins, such as toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL). We isolated community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains producing both TSST-1 and PVL isolated from severe necrotizing pneumonia cases in a Nepali family. Detection of these CA-MRSA strains is rare in the world, and infection with these strains can take a rapidly progressive and lethal course. In this study, we traced the clinical course of this case and conducted a genetic analysis of the isolated strains. CASE

A fulminant presentation of post-COVID-19 necrotizing pneumonia and ischemic stroke in an 8-year-old girl: A case report and literature review.

Necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is the destruction of the interstitial part of the lung due to severe infection. One cause of this rare and fatal condition in pediatrics is Acinetobacter. Severe infections, especially pneumonia, can prone pediatric patients to ischemic stroke. This study reports an 8-year-old girl presented to the emergency department complaining of shortness of breath, fever, and fatigue. She was admitted to the intensive care unit due to respiratory distress and pericardial effusion. Swab and respiratory secretion tests for COVID-19 and Acinetobacter were positive. In her admissi

Lack of protection in mice and necrotizing bronchointerstitial pneumonia with bronchiolitis in guinea pigs immunized with vaccines directed against the hsp60 molecule of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

In this study, the hsp60 and hsp70 heat shock protein antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis were tested as potential vaccine candidates, using purified recombinant protein antigens or antigens encoded in the form of a DNA plasmid vaccine. Guinea pigs vaccinated with a mixture of the two proteins showed no evidence of resistance to low-dose aerosol challenge infection and quickly developed severe lung damage characterized by necrotizing bronchointerstitial pneumonia and bronchiolitis. As a result, we turned instead to a DNA vaccination approach using a plasmid encoding the hsp60 antigen of M.
