Ruptured popliteal cyst diagnosed by ultrasound before evaluation for deep vein thrombosis.

Most popliteal cysts are asymptomatic. However, cysts may rupture, resulting in pain and swelling of the leg that could also arise from other diseases, including deep vein thrombosis, lymphedema, cellulitis, and tear of a muscle or tendon. Therefore, it is difficult to diagnose a ruptured popliteal cyst based on only a patient's history and physical examination. Musculoskeletal ultrasound has been regarded as a diagnostic tool for ruptured popliteal cyst. Here, we describe a patient who was rapidly diagnosed as ruptured popliteal cyst by ultrasonography. Therefore, ultrasound could be used to

Doppler ultrasonography and exercise testing in diagnosing a popliteal artery adventitial cyst.

We describe popliteal arterial adventitial cystic disease which causes intermittent claudication in a young athletic man, with atypical manifestation, without loss of foot pulses on knee flexion nor murmur in the popliteal fossa. The findings obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging were non-diagnostic. The diagnosis resulted from Echo-Doppler ultrasonography along with peak exercise testing. Ultrasonography also provided useful physiopathological informations suggesting that a popliteal artery adventitial cyst can become symptomatic if muscle exertion increases fluid pressure within the cyst,

[Subadventitial cyst of the popliteal artery. Non-invasive explorations. Anatomo-pathologic data].

Subadventitial cyst of the popliteal artery is a well known entity. We report a new case and the diagnostic and therapeutic advantages of noninvasive explorations. Transcutaneous duplex-scan provided diagnosis and showed cystic formations in contact with a segmentary occlusion of the popliteal artery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidenced communication between the cysts and the articular capsule of the knee joint. Surgical exeresis confirmed the communication with the synovial fluid. This observation demonstrated: i) the contribution of duplex-scan for the diagnosis of adventitial cysts a

Ruptured popliteal cyst -- an unusual complication of osteo-arthritis: a case report.

Synovial rupture produces a syndrome resembling acute thrombophlebitis and it is usually seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The interesting feature reported here is the occurrence of popliteal cyst rupture in a patient with no evidence of inflammatory joint disease. It is important to diagnose this condition correctly and to avoid anticoagulant therapy.

Popliteal Artery Compression Caused by Intraneural Ganglion Cyst of the Tibial Nerve.

Intraneural ganglion cysts are rare, benign mucinous cysts that arise within the epineurium of peripheral nerves. They most commonly involve the peroneal nerve, whereas involvement of the tibial nerve is exceptionally rare. Patients typically present with neurological deficits involving motor and sensory function of the affected nerve. We present a case of an intraneural ganglion cyst of the tibial nerve manifesting primarily with atypical, vascular compression-like symptoms of intermittent claudication. A 43-year-old patient was referred to our department with a 1-year history of exertional,

A comparison of clinical efficacy between different surgical approaches for popliteal cyst.

BACKGROUND: A popliteal cyst is a benign swelling with synovial fluid located behind the knee joint. Popliteal cysts are often asymptomatic; however, symptomatic cysts may cause pain and may need surgery interventions. Here, we performed a perspective study to compare the clinical efficacy of different surgical approaches, including traditional open excision and advanced arthroscopic treatment. METHODS: A total of 76 patients with popliteal cysts were assigned into three groups by a randomized complete block design. Group A included 32 patients (15 males and 17 females, age 55.3 ± 9.8 years)

Popliteal cyst excision using open posterior approach after arthroscopic partial medial meniscectomy.

Popliteal cysts are known to be associated with intra-articular pathology, which must be addressed to prevent cyst recurrence. Indications for popliteal cyst excision include cases in which the popliteal cyst does not respond to conservative treatment or arthroscopic intervention or cases in which an underlying cause cannot be found. Several techniques have been described to excise these cysts. Traditionally, open techniques have been associated with cyst recurrence. More recently, arthroscopic cystectomy has been described. However, the risk of recurrence persists because arthroscopy may not

Gigantic popliteal synovial cyst caused by wear particles after total knee arthroplasty.

We present a case exhibiting persistent joint effusion and formation of a gigantic popliteal synovial cyst 8 years after total knee joint arthroplasty. Assessment using flow cytometry revealed that both joint and cyst fluid contained abundant macrophage-phagocytosing wear particles. This finding indicates that wear particles participated in formation of the cyst through the communication between the joint cavity and cyst. Intraoperatively, prominent villous synovial proliferation was observed in both the joint and cyst, and delamination failure of the polyethylene insert was identified. Becaus

Demonstration of an infected popliteal (Baker's) cyst with three-phase skeletal scintigraphy.

A case is reported of an infected popliteal (Baker's) cyst demonstrated with triple phase skeletal scintigraphy. Although double-contrast arthrography and ultrasonography are currently the modalities most frequently employed to diagnose the presence of popliteal cysts, they may also be detected utilizing this radionuclide technique in the course of evaluation for knee joint disease or septic arthritis. Radionuclide studies may be more sensitive for the evaluation of associated inflammatory disease involving the knee joint.

A posterior ascending popliteal cyst mimicking thrombophlebitis following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Pain and swelling of the lower extremity following total knee arthroplasty are not infrequent. The most frequent conditions responsible for these symptoms include thrombophlebitis, prosthetic loosening, infection, and fracture of either the prosthesis or the bones. In addition to these conditions, a dissecting or ruptured popliteal cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute calf pain and swelling following total knee arthroplasty. Two patients with symptoms of phlebothrombosis were evaluated retrospectively two to three years following total knee arthroplasty. In both pat

Ruptured popliteal cyst stimulating deep vein thrombosis with false positive radiofibrinogen uptake.

A case is described in which deep vein thrombosis of the calf was initially diagnosed on the basis of the clinical signs and the radiofibrinogen uptake in a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The correct diagnosis of ruptured popliteal cyst was later established by arthrography and phlebography. Attention is drawn to the unreliability of the radiofibrinogen uptake test in the presence of ruptured popliteal cyst and alternative diagnostic methods are discussed.

Subcutaneous hydatid cyst in the popliteal fossa at the site of a previous wasp sting.

We report an uncommon case of a primary Echinococcus cyst that developed in the subcutaneous tissue of the right popliteal fossa, at the spot of a previous wasp sting, suggesting the possibility of an unusual transmission of the eggs by insects. This unusual presentation was initially considered as a Baker cyst until parasytological results verified Echinococcus hydatidosus, the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus, as diagnosis. However, the most common path of Echinococcus granulosus infection is through contact with a definitive host or by ingestion of ova through contaminated water or fo

Arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cysts: clinical and magnetic resonance imaging results.

PURPOSE: This study examined the functional and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes of popliteal cysts with combined intra-articular pathologies that were treated arthroscopically by decompression and a cystectomy through an additional posteromedial cystic portal. METHODS: From January 2003 to March 2008, 31 patients were treated with a modified arthroscopic technique to decompress a popliteal cyst. The connecting valvular mechanism was found in all cases at the posteromedial compartment through the anterolateral viewing portal, and it was corrected by resecting the capsular fold throug

Corynebacterium septic arthritis of the knee presenting as a ruptured septic popliteal cyst.

A rare case of a septic knee arthritis presenting as an infected ruptured popliteal cyst is described. Infection of a popliteal cyst is an uncommon complication of septic arthritis and presentation can mimic that of an acute deep vein thrombosis, leading to delay in diagnosis and treatment. Of interest, the typical hallmarks of infection and haematological markers of inflammation were all unremarkable in the current case. This case was of additional interest in that there have been no reports in the literature of Corynebacterium spp. being isolated from an infected popliteal cyst. Invasive inf
