Diabetes affects everything: Type 2 diabetes self-management among Spanish-speaking hispanic immigrants.

This article is a report of qualitative findings of a mixed-methods study of the relationships among knowledge, self-efficacy, health promoting behaviors, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) self-management among limited-english-proficient recent Hispanic immigrants, a population with increased incidence of T2DM and barriers to successful T2DM management. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 participants, and physiological and demographic data also were collected. The participants generally attributed developing the disease to strong emotions and viewed T2DM as a serious disease.

Assessing and responding to palliative care needs in rural sub-Saharan Africa: results from a model intervention and situation analysis in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Palliative care is rarely accessible in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Partners In Health and the Malawi government established the Neno Palliative Care Program (NPCP) to provide palliative care in rural Neno district. We conducted a situation analysis to evaluate early NPCP outcomes and better understand palliative care needs, knowledge, and preferences. METHODS: Employing rapid evaluation methodology, we collected data from 3 sources: 1) chart review of all adult patients from the NPCP's first 9 months; 2) structured interviews with patients and caregivers; 3) semi-structured inter

Long-term condition management in adults with intellectual disability in primary care: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities have higher morbidity and earlier mortality than the general population. Access to primary health care is lower, despite a higher prevalence of many long-term conditions. AIM: To synthesise the evidence for the management of long-term conditions in adults with intellectual disabilities and identify barriers and facilitators to management in primary care. DESIGN & SETTING: Mixed-methods systematic review. METHOD: Seven electronic databases were searched to identify both quantitative and qualitative studies concerning identification and manage

Improving Stroke Risk Factor Management Focusing on Health Disparities and Knowledge Gaps.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States and worldwide, necessitating comprehensive efforts to optimize stroke risk factor management. Health disparities in stroke incidence, prevalence, and risk factor management persist among various race/ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic populations and negatively impact stroke outcomes. This review highlights existing literature and guidelines for stroke risk factor management, emphasizing health disparities among certain populations. Moreover, stroke risk factors for special groups, including the young, the very elderly,

Impact of integrated community case management on health-seeking behavior in rural Zambia.

Provision of integrated community case management (iCCM) for common childhood illnesses by community health workers (CHWs) represents an increasingly common strategy for reducing childhood morbidity and mortality. We sought to assess how iCCM availability influenced care-seeking behavior. In areas where two different iCCM approaches were implemented, we conducted baseline and post-study household surveys on healthcare-seeking practices among women who were caring for children ≤ 5 years in their homes. For children presenting with fever, there was an increase in care sought from CHWs and a decr

Palliative care & chronic liver disease: barriers to care, health disparities & the role of health literacy.

Cirrhosis continues to excel as one of the leading causes of death worldwide, characterized by an often tumultuous and unpredictable disease course with progressive decline accompanied by severe symptom burden, impacted quality of life (QOL), high healthcare expenditures, and caregiver burn out. This patient population often has concurrent concerns related to their underlying disease such as substance use disorders, mental health, or socioeconomic factors that may complicate their management. Palliative care (PC) and a multidisciplinary team approach can make substantial impacts through additi

Health and safety needs of older farmers: part II. Agricultural injuries.

A random sample (N = 87) of older Illinois farmers was surveyed to assess their experiences with traumatic injuries and the relationship between injury rate and age, type of farm activities, amount of stress, and hours of work per week. Farmers' knowledge of safety was assessed. Findings revealed that the number of hours worked, age, and type of farm activities were not significantly related to the number of injuries reported. However, self-reported stress, when stratified by age, was found to be related to injury among farmers aged 55 to 59 years. Also, scores on a farm safety quiz were found

New advances and challenges in sexually transmitted infections in the adolescent population. Document of the Working Group on HIV and STIs of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SEIP).

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) constitute a significant public health concern, with an increasing incidence in recent years. The management of these infections among the adolescent population represents a current challenge and should be based in comprehensive educational interventions (such as access to comprehensive sexuality education from early childhood and specialized training in sexual health for health care professionals), preventive strategies (including access to vaccination, implementation of pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis programs, and organized STI screening initiatives

Making healthcare accessible for single adults with complex needs experiencing long-term homelessness: A realist evaluation protocol.

Background: Over the last several years, homelessness has increased in Ireland and across Europe. Rates have recently declined since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, but it is unclear whether emergency housing measures will remain in place permanently. Populations experiencing long-term homelessness face a higher burden of multi-morbidity at an earlier age than housed populations and have poorer health outcomes. However, this population also has more difficulty accessing appropriate health services. A realist review by the authors found that important health system contexts wh

Evidence, theory and context: using intervention mapping in the development of a community-based self-management program for chronic low back pain in a rural African primary care setting - the good back program.

BACKGROUND: Rural Nigeria has one of the greatest burdens of low back pain but there are no effective evidence-based interventions to manage it in this population. This paper presents the application of the intervention mapping (IM) approach in the development of a complex behavior change intervention - The Good Back program, aimed at reducing non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP) disability in rural Nigeria. METHODS: The first four steps of IM were applied. A critical review of the literature, 2 qualitative studies and a population-based cross-sectional study in rural Nigeria helped to i

Sharp thinking.

Nurses are the healthcare professionals most at risk from neeldestick and sharps injuries, according to the latest figures from the RCN's EPINet project. During 2004, 1,990 injuries were reported from the 20 self-selecting participating sites. Nurses sustained 43 per cent of these injuries. Disposable syringes and needles were the most common equipment to cause injury. Although discouraged, 4 per cent of injuries occurred during recapping of needles. Just under a third of injuries were sustained by staff other than the original user of the sharp.

The latent profile of health literacy among older adults patients with chronic disease comorbidity and its association with self-management behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases pose a heavy worldwide public health burden. China is both one of the fastest-aging nations and the one with the largest older adults population. Among its older adults, chronic disease comorbidity is highly common and seriously harms both health outcomes and quality of life. Successful disease management requires not just clinical care but also adequate health literacy in everyday settings. Nevertheless, health literacy levels in Chinese older adults continue to be relatively low. Clarifying the different health literacy subgroups among multimorbid older adults in

Family Support and Type 2 Diabetes Self-management Behaviors in Underserved Latino/a/x Patients.

BACKGROUND: Latino/a/x families experience persistent Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) disparities, including higher rates of diagnosis and mortality due to disease complications than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. Though greater social support is associated with improved disease outcomes for Latino/a/x patients with diabetes, research has yet to identify the specific pathways through which social support, and specifically family support, influences self-management. PURPOSE: This study tested a theoretical model highlighting the mechanisms and pathways linking social support and physic

Optimizing outcomes for children with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in low- and middle-income countries by early correct diagnosis, reducing toxic death and preventing abandonment.

In high-income countries, more than 90% of children with mature B-cell lymphomas are cured with frontline therapy. However, cure requires prompt and correct diagnosis, careful risk stratification, very intense chemotherapy and meticulous supportive care, together with logistical support for patients who live far from the cancer centre or face financial barriers to receiving care. In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), cure rates range from 20% to 70% because of lack of diagnosis, misdiagnosis, abandonment of treatment, toxic death and excess relapse with reduced-intensity regimens. Prevention of carbon monoxide exposure in general and recreational aviation.

Carbon monoxide exposure is an important public health issue that poses a significant, albeit uncommon risk in aviation. Exposure is most common in single engine piston-driven aircraft where air is passed over the exhaust manifold to serve as cabin heat. Effective primary prevention of this exposure is the regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft exhaust systems, as required by law. For situations at special risk should exposure occur, and where there is concern for the public safety, installation of active warning devices for CO intrusion into cockpits may improve secondary prevention.

A narrative review on sexual wellbeing and dysfunctions: Research in the past 15 years.

BACKGROUND: Psychosexual health is an important aspect of mental and physical wellbeing. Though Indian culture has a rich history of sexuality, over the years, our population has been reticent in talking about the same. With the advent of technology and new legislations protecting the rights of LGBTQIA population, awareness is also on the rise. METHODS: This review focuses on research published by Indian authors over the past 15 years, with search of databases like PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Litmaps to include original articles and case reports. RESULTS: Most studies focus on male s

Premalignant Lesions in the Kidney Transplant Candidate.

End-stage kidney disease patients who are referred for transplant undergo an extensive evaluation process to ensure their health prior to transplant due in part to the shortage of available organs. Although management and surveillance guidelines exist for malignancies identified in the transplant and waitlist populations, less is written about the management of premalignant lesions in this population. This review covers the less common premalignant lesions (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, thymoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor) that can be found i
