Fabricating a partial nasal prosthesis with a custom nasal dilator design.

Patients undergoing partial rhinectomy with limited size may have the major portion of the nasal structure preserved. However, the fibrosis or scar formation after the surgery may cause distortion of remaining tissues, followed by nasal airway obstruction. By physically expanding an affected nostril during the impression and using digital technology to design a custom flexible internal nasal dilator, embedded in the medical grade silicone during processing, a partial nasal prosthesis with airway-maintaining purpose can be fabricated to improve quality of life both esthetically and functionally

Large choledochocoele: difficulties in radiological diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: A choledochocoele is a dilatation of the intramural portion of the distal common bile duct within the duodenal wall. It usually presents with recurrent crises of right upper quadrant pain, hyperamylasaemia or jaundice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a 12-year-old boy with a choledochocoele that was missed on several US examinations despite its large size. RESULTS: Findings on US, IV cholangiography, upper gastrointestinal contrast studies, ERCP and surgery are shown. The histological findings as well as the usual differential diagnosis are discussed.

[Endoscopy in the evaluation of rare forms of gastric ulcers].

The endoscopic examination made in 49309 patients with long standing "gastritis" history has revealed 1476 patients (2.99%) with ulcers of gastric localization. The diagnosis of ulcer disease of the stomach had been previously established only in 17.5% of them. The analysis performed has revealed atypical rare forms of gastric ulcers: by their localization (proximal, ring of the pylorus or the prepyloric portion), by the size (giant), by the amount (multiple), by typological features (associated or secondary forms). Detailed characteristic of the ulcers mentioned is given.

Partial ruptures of the distal triceps tendons show only slightly lower ultimate load to failure: a biomechanical study.

OBJECTIVE: Partial ruptures of the distal triceps tendon are usually treated surgically from a size of > 50% tendon involvement. The aim of this study was to compare the ultimate load to failure of intact triceps tendons with partially ruptured tendons and describe the rupture mechanism. METHODS: Eighteen human fresh-frozen cadaveric elbow specimens were randomly assigned to two groups with either an intact distal triceps tendon or with a simulated partial rupture of 50% of the tendon. A continuous traction on the distal triceps tendon was applied to provoke a complete tendon rupture. The max

Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in nucleus rotundus in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Nucleus rotundus is a prominent nucleus in the dorsal thalamus of nonmammalian amniotes. In one group of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, previous studies have identified three parts of this neuronal aggregate. The central portion, the rotundal core, which receives visual input from the midbrain and projects to a restricted portion of the telencephalon, contains relay cells only. Previous examinations using Nissl morphology indicated that neurons of the rotundal core were not a homogeneous population of cells. The present investigation utilized another methodology to examine cell populations withi

Case of intracranial vertebral artery dissection in young age.

Stroke in childhood is rare and has its own characteristic findings. Vertebrobasilar ischemia due to trauma in this age group has been described, but its specific features have not yet been clearly defined. Dissection of vertebral artery is one of the causes of vertebrobasilar ischemia that is very uncommonly detected in the intracranial portion of the posterior circulation in childhood. We report a 14-year-old boy with a history of neck trauma and transient vertigo attacks who presented with brainstem and cerebellar ischemic findings. Due to the large left cerebellar infarct size compressing

Three-dimensional analysis of 61 human endolymphatic ducts and sacs in ears with and without Menière's disease.

We used light microscopy and computerized graphic reconstruction techniques to examine the endolymphatic duct and sac in 20 pairs of bones from patients with Menière's disease and 21 bones from controls. The diameters of the endolymphatic duct and the proximal portion of the vestibular aqueduct were significantly smaller in Menière's disease ears than in controls. Graphic reconstructions showed the Menière's sacs to be smaller and to have fewer tubular epithelial structures in the intraosseous portion than in the control ears. The median volume of the sac in the Menière's disease side was subs

Yellow nail syndrome in patients with acquired immunodeficiency disease.

Eight patients with proved diagnoses of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, some with chronic sinusitis, pleural effusion, tuberculosis, and other pathologic conditions, were serially examined. Four had yellow discoloration of the distal portions of the nails. Nails of some patients showed ridging, loss or decrease in size of lunulae, and opaqueness. These findings indicate the presence of the yellow nail syndrome, a relatively rare condition, in 50% of these examined patients.

Gastric and duodenal polyps in familial polyposis coli.

Endoscopy with multiple biopsies of the upper gastrointestinal tract was repeated yearly over a two to six year period in nine patients with familial polyposis coli from three families. Adenomatous polyps, one to 20 in number and 2-8 mm in size, were detected in the antrum and the first and second duodenal portions in seven patients, while hyperplastic polyps were detected in four patients in the gastric body. In two patients adenomatous tubules were observed in the biopsies of endoscopically normal mucosa from the same area where adenomatous polyps later developed. Lymphoid polyps were detect

An odontometric study of tooth dimension in diastematic dentition.

BACKGROUND: One of the causes of the maxillary midline diastema (MMD) may be discrepancy between teeth and maxilla dimension. That can relate to two situations: when teeth have correct size but maxilla is too large or maxilla bone is in the proper size but teeth have reduced dimensions (microdontia). The present study has been conducted to investigate the differences in the linear dimensions of upper central and lateral incisors and canines in diastematic dentition and to compare them with the control group without diastema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on Caucasian individu

A craniopharyngioma with spontaneous involution of a gadolinium-enhanced region on magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: It has not been reported previously that the solid enhancing portion of a craniopharyngioma has involuted without a change in cyst size. CASE DESCRIPTION: We herein report a case of a craniopharyngioma with spontaneous involution of a solid gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced region on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 44-year-old female was referred to our department with a mass on MRI associated with headaches and polyuria. The images showed a suprasellar cystic lesion progressing from the posterior pituitary lobe to the right hypothalamus along the pituitary stalk. Examinations of the c

Basis of Shoulder Nerve Entrapment Syndrome: An Ultrasonographic Study Exploring Factors Influencing Cross-Sectional Area of the Suprascapular Nerve.

As changes in nerves' shape and size are common ultrasonographic findings of entrapment neuropathy, measurement of the nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) becomes the mostly used indicator to differentiate normality from pathology. Recently, more US research has been conducted to measure the shape of the suprascapular notch and the diameter of the suprascapular nerve. Because the suprascapular nerve is paramount for various shoulder disorders, the present study aims to establish normal values of suprascapular nerve sizes at different levels as well as to investigate potential influence of partici

Giant cystic chondroid hamartoma.

We report a case of huge pulmonary chondroid hamartoma with multilocular cysts in a 38-yr-old male patient. The lobectomy specimen of the left lower lobe showed a large multilocular cystic mass, 11.5 x 10 cm in size. The mass had thin-walled, variable-sized cysts and areas of solid cartilaginous small nodules in the interstitium, which occupied the superior segment and the upper portion of the basal segment. There was no connection with bronchus or vessel. Microscopically, the cysts and cleft-like spaces were lined by ciliated columnar epithelium and the solid components were composed of carti

A Case of Coil Embolization for an Angiographically Occult Ruptured Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm.

OBJECTIVE: We report a case in which coil embolization was performed for an angiographically occult ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm (Acom AN). CASE PRESENTATION: A 91-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of sudden deterioration of consciousness. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage in the basal cisterns, and CT angiography identified a 5-mm Acom AN. The next day, a catheter angiogram slightly visualized the neck portion of the Acom AN, despite no apparent visualization of the aneurysmal sac. We suspected intraluminal thrombosis of ru

Mapping human long bone compartmentalisation during ontogeny: a new methodological approach.

Throughout ontogeny, human bones undergo differentiation in terms of shape, size and tissue type; this is a complex scenario in which the variations in the tissue compartmentalisation of the cortical bone are still poorly understood. Currently, compartmentalisation is studied using methodologies that oversimplify the bone tissue complexity. Here, we present a new methodological approach that integrates a histological description and a mineral content analysis to study the compartmentalisation of the whole mineralised and non-mineralised tissues (i.e., spatial distribution in long bone sections

Finding consistent disease subnetworks across microarray datasets.

BACKGROUND: While contemporary methods of microarray analysis are excellent tools for studying individual microarray datasets, they have a tendency to produce different results from different datasets of the same disease. We aim to solve this reproducibility problem by introducing a technique (SNet). SNet provides both quantitative and descriptive analysis of microarray datasets by identifying specific connected portions of pathways that are significant. We term such portions within pathways as "subnetworks". RESULTS: We tested SNet on independent datasets of several diseases, including child
