Evaluating an Algorithm and Clinical Prediction Rule for Diagnosis of Bone Stress Injuries.

BACKGROUND: A novel algorithm and clinical prediction rule (CPR), with 18 variables, was created in 2014. The CPR generated a bone stress injury (BSI) score, which was used to determine the necessity of imaging in suspected BSI. To date, there are no validated algorithms for imaging selection in patients with suspected BSI. HYPOTHESIS: A simplified CPR will assist clinicians with diagnosis and decision making in patients with suspected BSI. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: A total of 778 military trainees with lower extremity pain were enrolled.

Prediction Algorithm of the Cat Spinal Segments Lengths and Positions in Relation to the Vertebrae.

Detailed knowledge of the topographic organization and precise access to the spinal cord segments is crucial for the neurosurgical manipulations as well as in vivo neurophysiological investigations of the spinal networks involved in sensorimotor and visceral functions. Because of high individual variability, accurate identification of particular portion of the lumbosacral enlargement is normally possible only during postmortem dissection. Yet, it is often necessary to determine the precise location of spinal segments prior to in vivo investigation, targeting spinal cord manipulations, neuroint

Development of a novel diagnostic algorithm to predict NASH in HCV-positive patients.

Non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH) is a severe disease characterised by liver inflammation and progressive hepatic fibrosis, which may progress to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Clinical evidence suggests that in hepatitis C virus patients steatosis and NASH are associated with faster fibrosis progression and hepatocellular carcinoma. A safe and reliable non-invasive diagnostic method to detect NASH at its early stages is still needed to prevent progression of the disease. We prospectively enrolled 91 hepatitis C virus-positive patients with histologically proven chronic liver dise

A Predictive Model for Guillain-Barré Syndrome Based on Single Learning Algorithms.

Background. Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a potentially fatal autoimmune neurological disorder. The severity varies among the four main subtypes, named as Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (AIDP), Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN), Acute Motor Sensory Axonal Neuropathy (AMSAN), and Miller-Fisher Syndrome (MF). A proper subtype identification may help to promptly carry out adequate treatment in patients. Method. We perform experiments with 15 single classifiers in two scenarios: four subtypes' classification and One versus All (OvA) classification. We used a dataset with the

The use of the WINROP screening algorithm for the prediction of retinopathy of prematurity in a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a gestational age (GA)-related illness that can lead to blindness in premature infants. Timely screening of premature infants could improve visual prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the WINROP algorithm as a method of predicting severe ROP in a Chinese population. METHODS: 590 infants with a GA <32 weeks were entered into an online surveillance system (www.winrop.com) that included ROP evaluations and weekly weight measurements from birth to a corrected GA of 40 weeks. If the rate of weight gain decreased to a certain degree, the algorithm signa

A dipstick protein and specific gravity algorithm accurately predicts pathological proteinuria.

BACKGROUND: The proper strategy to screen for early chronic kidney disease is debatable, but protein-creatinine ratio from a random urine sample (UPC) commonly is used. The purpose is to determine whether dipstick data effectively identify patients with increased UPC ratios. Because urine concentration affects proteinuria interpretation, we hypothesized that dipstick protein (DSP) and specific gravity (SG) are sufficient for screening. METHODS: A hospital laboratory database was searched for urine samples simultaneously assayed for UPC ratio, DSP, and SG (n = 2,098). A random 70% of the cohor
