Presbyopia occurs when the physiologically normal age-related reduction in the eyes focusing range reaches a point, when optimally corrected for distance vision, that the clarity of vision at near is insufficient to satisfy an individual's requirements. Hence, it is more about the impact it has on an individual's visual ability to function in their environment to maintain their lifestyle than a measured loss of focusing ability. Presbyopia has a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and emotional state. While a range of amelioration strategies exist, they are often difficult to…

BACKGROUND: Presbyopia has become a global disease affecting the world's aging population. Among various treatments, cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation have become the most popular and common methods of presbyopia correction. During the twentieth century, IOLs have underwent significant innovation and advancements to meet the patients' high demands for functional vision at all distances.
MAIN TEXT: To meet the increasing needs for excellent near and intermediate vision for daily activities, some premium IOLs with more than one focus have been developed, for example, t…

Exercise for presbyopia is theoretically ineffective. However, some studies have reported favorable subject responses, although the reasons were not detected. We investigated one such presbyopic exercise. Twenty-three volunteers (48.5 ± 5.0 years) viewed near (30-40 cm) and far (>5 m) points back and forth 20 times in one set and repeated this four times daily. After 2 months, the accommodation or near visual acuity did not improve. The pupillary size under accommodative stimulation decreased significantly (p = 0.04) from 4.03 ± 0.84 to 3.75 ± 0.98 mm, and the convergence amounts increased sig…

Presbyopia is the primary cause of reduction in the quality of life of people in their 40s, due to dependence on spectacles. Therefore, presbyopia correction has become an evolving and rapidly progressive field in refractive surgery. There are two primary options for presbyopia correction: the dynamic approach uses the residual accommodative capacity of the eye, and the static approach attempts to enhance the depth of focus of the optical system. The dynamic approach attempts to reverse suspected pathophysiologic changes. Dynamic approaches such as accommodative intraocular lenses (IOLs), scle…

PURPOSE: To discuss the various static and dynamic surgical approaches which attempt to give presbyopes good vision at far, intermediate and near viewing distances.
CONTENT: Static methods broadly adopt the same optical techniques as those used in presbyopic contact lens correction and aim to satisfy the needs of the presbyope by increasing binocular depth-of-focus, often using monovision as well as simultaneous-imagery. Dynamic methods generally attempt to make use of at least some of the still-active elements of the accommodation system. They include procedures which are supposed to modify

Presbyopia, understood as the age-related loss of ability to clearly see near objects, was known to ancient Greeks. However, few references to it can be found in ancient manuscripts. A relevant discussion on presbyopia appears in a book called Symposiacs written by Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus around 100 A.C. In this work, Plutarch provided four explanations of presbyopia, associated with different theories of vision. One of the explanations is particularly interesting as it is based on a binocular theory of vision. In this theory, vision is produced when visual rays, emanating from the eyes, fo…

Accommodation is a dioptric change in the power of the eye to see clearly at near. Ciliary muscle contraction causes a release in zonular tension at the lens equator, which permits the elastic capsule to mould the young lens into an accommodated form. Presbyopia, the gradual age-related loss of accommodation, occurs primarily through a gradual age-related stiffening of the lens. While there are many possible options for relieving the symptoms of presbyopia, only relatively recently has consideration been given to surgical restoration of accommodation to the presbyopic eye. To understand how th…

Presbyopia is the natural loss of accommodation that affects the majority of middle-aged individuals. Once a person reaches their mid 40s, has trouble making activities that were easily performed when younger such as reading, using a cellular phone or computer. In addition to the visual difficulties emotional repercussions have been observed. The mechanism of presbyopia is not completely understood but it has many treatments from monovision and refractive surgery to scleral expansion surgery or PreLEX. Presbyopia represents one of the major challenges facing ophthalmology today.
