BACKGROUND: There are many circumstances in clinical practice in which it is helpful to have a definitive diagnosis of melanoma before subjecting a patient to mutilating surgery. Previous studies on the effect of incisional biopsy on melanoma prognosis were conflicting and lacked a matched control group to account for the other prognostic indicators.

A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the results of treatment of 40 wrist ganglia operated under local anesthesia over four years. The mean follow-up period was 27 months (range 6-48 months). There were 24 dorsal and 16 volar ganglia. The mean complication rate was 56% for volar ganglia, 12.5% for dorsal ganglia, and the difference was significant (p < 0.05). The recurrence rates were 31.2% and 8.3%, respectively (mean 17.5%). Clinical manifestations of eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) are characterized basing on examination of 40 patients aged 19-65 years. The disease arose primarily due to chemicals, first of all, to medicinal agents. Eosinophils were found in peripheral blood, on cytogram of bronchoalveolar lavage, lung biopsies. The patients received corticosteroids, desensitization drugs, underwent plasmapheresis. All the patients responded, though 20 of the 30 evaluated patients developed later recurrences.

The reported mortality for prenatally detected congenital diaphragmatic hernia is high. Polyhydramnios and presentation in early pregnancy have been suggested as high-risk factors adversely affecting outcome. We retrospectively reviewed 55 cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia diagnosed prenatally in our unit. There was an overall mortality of 73%. Ninety-four asymptomatic patients with internal carotid artery occlusion were followed for a mean of 44 months, 16% suffered strokes and 11.7% reported transient ischemic attacks (TIA). The annual stroke and TIA rates were 4.4% and 3.2%, respectively, the annual mortality was 11.3%. Three cases of congenital cranial hemihypertrophy are described. CT or ultrasound scans showed unilateral cerebral enlargement with dilatation of the ipsilateral ventricle. Seizures occurred in two patients and the neurodevelopmental outlook appears poor. These patients represent a poor prognosis subgroup of the congenital hemihypertrophies.
