Cognitive, psychophysical, and neural correlates of vulvar pain in primary and secondary provoked vestibulodynia: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is a common condition characterized by localized, provoked pain that can be present since first vaginal penetration attempt (primary) or can develop after a period of pain-free penetration (secondary). Research has demonstrated psychosocial and psychophysical differences between women with these subtypes of PVD, but the question of whether neural responses to pain also differ remains to be investigated. AIM: This study aims to examine whether cognitive, psychophysical, and neural responses to vulvar pressure pain differ between women with PVD1 and P

Post-traumatic olfactory loss: psychophysical, electrophysiological and neuroradiological findings in three single case studies.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is one of the main causes of smell disorders. The degree of olfactory loss may vary and depend on the severity, nature and location of injury within the olfactory system. The diagnosis of disorders of the sense of smell is based on medical history and clinical data supported by psychophysical tests of smell, electrophysiological and neuroimaging measures. METHODS: This study reports three single clinical cases of post-traumatic anosmia evaluated by Sniffin' Sticks Test, Olfactory Event-Related Potential and Magnetic Resonance Imaging examinations. RESULTS:

Understanding the structural determinants of object confusion in memory: an assessment of psychophysical approaches to estimating visual similarity.

Computer-generated shapes varying on visual dimensions such as curvature, tapering, and thickness have been used to investigate identification deficits in the category-specific visual agnosia (CSVA) Patient E.L.M.. However, whether the implemented variations on each of these dimensions were perceived by novice observers as "similar amounts of change" is unknown. To estimate distance in psychophysical shape space, sets of shapes were developed using two different scaling methods--an objective method based on visual search, and a subjective method based on judgments of similarity--and a third ap

Posttraumatic smell loss: relationship of psychophysical tests and volumes of the olfactory bulbs and tracts and the temporal lobes.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to define the primary sites of injury in patients with posttraumatic anosmia and hyposmia with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and to determine if these sites correlated with the results of psychophysical olfactory tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients with subjective loss in olfaction after head trauma underwent volumetric MR studies of the olfactory bulbs and tracts and temporal lobes. Pearson correlations were computed between olfactory bulb and tract and temporal lobe volumes and the patients' scores on tests of odor iden

Temporal overshoot in simultaneous-masked psychophysical tuning curves from normal and hearing-impaired listeners.

Simultaneous-masked psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained from normal-hearing and sensorineural hearing-impaired listeners. The 20-ms signal was presented at the onset or at the temporal center of the 400-ms masker. For the normal-hearing listeners, as shown previously [S. P. Bacon and B. C. J. Moore, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 80, 1638-1645 (1986)], the PTCs were sharper on the high-frequency side for a signal in the temporal center of the masker. For the hearing-impaired listeners, however, the shape of the PTC was virtually independent of the temporal position of the signal. These data

Psychophysical assessments of olfaction after endoscopic unilateral resection with post-operative radiotherapy in olfactory neuroblastomas.

Endoscopic resection with post-operative radiotherapy has been included in the standard therapeutic options for olfactory neuroblastomas (ONBs). Recent publications have indicated the feasibility of olfactory preservation after endoscopic unilateral resection of ONBs. This study validated residual olfaction using the psychophysical assessment, T & T olfactometer, in patients who underwent endoscopic unilateral resection with post-operative radiotherapy. A single-institutional retrospective review was performed to identify patients who underwent endoscopic unilateral resection of ONBs with olfa

Modulatory effects of repeated psychophysical stress on masseter muscle nociception in the nucleus raphe magnus of rats.

Psychophysical stress can cause neural changes that increase nociception in the orofacial region, particularly the masseter muscle (MM). The nucleus raphe magnus (NRM), which is located in the brain stem, serves the crucial role of regulating nociception through descending modulatory pain control. However, it remains unclear if neural activities in the NRM are affected under psychophysical stress conditions. This study conducted experiments to assess (1) whether neural activity, indicated by Fos expression in an NRM that has experienced MM injury, is affected by the stress of repeated forced s

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on psychophysical stress in patients with adrenal insufficiency: the CORTI-COVID study.

PURPOSE: COVID-19 is a novel threat to patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI), whose life expectancy and quality (QoL) are impaired by an increased risk of infections and stress-triggered adrenal crises (AC). If infected, AI patients require prompt replacement tailoring. We assessed, in a cohort of AI patients: prevalence and clinical presentation of COVID-19; prevalence of AC and association with intercurrent COVID-19 or pandemic-related psychophysical stress; lockdown-induced emotional burden, and health-related QoL. METHODS: In this monocentric (Ancona University Hospital, Italy), cross-

Effects of age on psychophysical measures of auditory temporal processing and speech reception at low and high levels.

Age-related cochlear synaptopathy (CS) has been shown to occur in rodents with minimal noise exposure, and has been hypothesized to play a crucial role in age-related hearing declines in humans. It is not known to what extent age-related CS occurs in humans, and how it affects the coding of supra-threshold sounds and speech in noise. Because in rodents CS affects mainly low- and medium-spontaneous rate (L/M-SR) auditory-nerve fibers with rate-level functions covering medium-high levels, it should lead to greater deficits in the processing of sounds at high than at low stimulus levels. In this

Psychophysical measures of visual function and everyday perceptual experience in a case of congenital stationary night blindness.

An appreciation of the relation between laboratory measures of visual deficit and everyday perceptual experience is fundamental to understanding the impact of a visual condition on patients and so to a fuller characterization of the disorder. This study aims to understand better the interpretative processes by which modified sensory information is perceived by a patient with congenital stationary night blindness and the adaptive strategies that are devised to deal with their measurable visual loss. Psychophysical measurements of temporal resolution, spectral sensitivity, and color discriminati

Agreement between psychophysical tuning curves and the threshold equalizing noise test in dead region identification.

OBJECTIVE: Identification of dead regions is currently based on the results of psychophysical tuning curves (PTC) and the threshold equalizing noise (TEN) test. Summers et al (2003) found poor agreement (56%) between PTC- and TEN test results. Kluk and Moore (2005) argued that these results are explained by beat- and/or combination tone detection. The purpose of this study was to examine the diagnostic dead region relationship between PTCs, modified for beats and/or combination tone detection, and the TEN test with levels calibrated in hearing levels (HL), i.e., TEN[HL]. DESIGN: Twenty-four h

Changes in the masticatory muscles, periodontal tissues, and the pharyngeal ring in Wistar rats in chronic psychophysical stress.

Experimental studies performed on 120 male Wistar rats using morphometric and histological methods demonstrated changes in oral cavity tissues on exposure to chronic psychophysical stress (dosed swimming). The masticatory muscles showed foci of non-infective inflammation, dystrophic changes in muscle fibers, and contractures. The periodontal ligament showed impairments to the microcirculation with congestion of the venous bed, local bleeding into the tissue, changes in the directions of bundles of collagen fibers, and deformation of bundles. The tissues of the pharyngeal ring showed decreases
