Resting cardiac function in adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The impact of borderline personality disorder symptoms and psychosocial functioning.

Vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) is reduced in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is associated with comorbid psychopathology, in particular BPD. We aimed to examine differences in cardiac function (vmHRV and heart rate [HR]) comparing adolescents (12-17 years) engaging in NSSI (n=30) and healthy controls (n=30). Further, we aimed to determine clinical concomitants of cardiac function in patients with NSSI. Analyses showed no significant group differences on cardiac function. Controlling for a host of confounding variables resting state HR and

Sexual and Psychosocial Functioning in Women with MRKHS after Neovaginoplasty According to Wharton-Sheares-George: A Case Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS) has a major impact on a woman's psychological and sexual well-being. In most of the studies that addressed treatment techniques, postoperative sexual function was reported to be satisfactory; however, comparatively few studies have additionally provided an accurate analysis of psychosocial functions in MRKHS patients following different kinds of neovaginal treatment. This study is to evaluate sexual and psychosocial functioning after creation of a neovagina according to Wharton-Sheares-George in women with MRKHS. METHODS: We performe…

Genetic counselling in parents of children with congenital heart disease significantly improves knowledge about causation and enhances psychosocial functioning.

BACKGROUND: One of the key questions asked by parents of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is 'why' and 'how did this happen?'. Receiving more information in response to these questions is therefore important to parents. This study sought to assess the efficacy of individualised genetic counselling sessions in improving knowledge of causation and psychosocial functioning in parents of children with CHD. METHODS: Parents of children undergoing surgery for CHD were offered individualised genetic counselling during their child's hospital admission. Assessments occurred at three time-p…

Assessing psychosocial functioning of bariatric surgery candidates with the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory-2 restructured form (MMPI-2-RF).

BACKGROUND: Psychological comorbidity is common in bariatric surgery candidates. Many multidisciplinary teams incorporate psychometric testing to screen for psychological factors that, if left unattended, may negatively impact surgical results. Here, we report descriptive findings and empirical correlates of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) scales among of bariatric surgery candidates undergoing a pre-surgical psychological evaluation. METHODS: The sample consisted of male (n = 324) and female (n = 658) patients seeking bariatric surgery who were adm

Diet Quality, Healthy Practices, and Psychosocial Functioning Across School Youth, Students, and Adults in Poland: A Cross-Sectional Online Survey.

Background: This study aimed to compare a limited set of predefined diet-, lifestyle-, knowledge-, and psychosocial indicators across school youth, students, and adults in Poland, and to examine their associations with three predefined outcomes: BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, poorer mental well-being, and high stress/overload. Diet quality, daily health-related practices, psychosocial well-being, and stress/overload may co-occur across different life stages, but online survey data require a focused analytical framework to avoid overinterpretation. Methods: This cross-sectional anonymous online survey include

Identify Potential Causal Relationships Between Cortical Thickness, Mismatch Negativity, Neurocognition, and Psychosocial Functioning in Drug-Naïve First-Episode Psychosis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cortical thickness (CT) alterations, mismatch negativity (MMN) reductions, and cognitive deficits are robust findings in first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, most studies focused on medicated patients, leaving gaps in our understanding of the interrelationships between CT, MMN, neurocognition, and psychosocial functioning in unmedicated FEP. This study aimed to employ multiple mediation analysis to investigate potential pathways among these variables in unmedicated drug-naïve FEP. METHODS: We enrolled 28 drug-naïve FEP and 34 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Clinical sympt…

Exploring the performance of during-treatment substance use outcome measures in predicting longer-term psychosocial functioning and post-treatment abstinence.

BACKGROUND: The selection of appropriate efficacy endpoints in clinical trials has been a long-standing challenge for the substance use disorder field. Using data from a large, multi-site National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network trial (CTN-0044; n=474), this secondary data analysis aimed to explore whether specific proximal (during-treatment) substance use outcome measures predict longer-term improvements in psychosocial functioning and post-treatment abstinence, and whether predictions vary depending on the specific substance (cannabis, cocaine/stimulants, opioids, and alcohol). …

Pain Acceptance in People With Chronic Pain and Spinal Cord Injury: Daily Fluctuation and Impacts on Physical and Psychosocial Functioning.

Daily fluctuation in pain acceptance and its impact on the physical and psychosocial functioning of individuals living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and chronic pain has not been examined. We used end-of-day diaries and multilevel modeling to examine the moderating effect of within- and between-person pain acceptance on associations between pain and physical and psychosocial functioning. Individuals with SCI and chronic pain (N = 124) completed 7 days of end-of-day diaries, which included measures of pain acceptance, pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, pain interference, participation in soc…

The impact of childhood trauma on psychosocial functioning and physical health in a non-clinical community sample of young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Given the fundamental emotional, social and physical development that occurs during the early years of life, childhood experiences are formative in shaping a person's life trajectory. Childhood trauma is a prevalent, multifaceted issue with well-documented long-term adverse health effects in clinical populations however; the impact of childhood trauma in the community is less clear. To address this, this study investigated how childhood trauma may impact physical and psychological health, sleep quality and autonomic function in a non-clinical community sample of adults. METHOD: Par

Long-Term Psychosocial Functioning in Women with Bilateral Prophylactic Mastectomy: Does Preservation of the Nipple-Areolar Complex Make a Difference?

INTRODUCTION: Nipple-sparing prophylactic mastectomy (PM) is an option for women at high-risk for breast cancer, and may offer better cosmetic results than a skin-sparing PM where the nipple-areolar complex (NAC) is removed. However, there may be residual breast cancer risk due to the maintained NAC. It is unclear if sparing the NAC with PM impacts on psychosocial functioning, including cancer-related distress and body image after PM. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey study of women who had undergone bilateral PM (no previous breast cancer) recruited through surgical or cancer geneti…

Clozapine and Psychosocial Function in Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine has unique efficacy for symptoms in treatment-resistant schizophrenia; however, symptomatic remission is not necessary nor sufficient for functional improvement. No study has pooled the effect of clozapine on psychosocial function across clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effects of clozapine with other antipsychotics on psychosocial function, and described the predictors of functional outcome. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE/PubMed, PsychINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of co

METHODS: Self-report survey data assessed childhood adversity and adolescent outcomes, including psychological wellbeing, quality of life, and substan
