Subsurface H2S Detection by a Surface Acoustic Wave Passive Wireless Sensor Interrogated with a Ground Penetrating Radar.

Long-term monitoring of organic pollutants in the soil is a major environmental challenge. We propose to meet this issue by the development of a polymer dedicated to selectively react with H2S, coating surface acoustic wave transducers designed as passive cooperative targets with the compound, and probing their response using Ground Penetrating RADAR, thus providing the capability to monitor the presence of H2S in the subsurface environment. The selectivity is brought by including lead(II) cation in a reticulated polymer matrix which can be deposited as a thin layer on a surface acoustic wave …

A new approach for inferring traffic-related air pollution: Use of radar-calibrated crowd-sourced traffic data.

BACKGROUND: Crowd-sourced traffic data potentially allow prediction of traffic-related air pollution at high temporal and spatial resolution. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations (1) of radar-based traffic measurements with congestion colors displayed on crowd-sourced traffic data maps and (2) of black carbon (BC) levels with radar and crowd-sourced traffic data. METHODS: At an off-ramp of an interstate and a small one-way street in a mixed-use area in New York City, we used radar devices to obtain vehicle speeds and flows (hourly counts) for cars and trucks. At these radar sites and at an ad…

Capturing gait parameters during asymmetric overground walking using ultra-wideband radars: A preliminary study.

This study investigates the deployability of commercially available impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar (UWB) sensors, in accurately detecting and analysing gait patterns during asymmetric overground locomotion. An adjustable knee brace was fitted on the right knee of 10 able-bodied participants, in five different confinement angles, during a 6-meter walking task to simulate asymmetric walking patterns. A computationally efficient signal processing framework extracts seven spatiotemporal gait parameters from six UWB radar signals, based on their joint Range-Doppler-Time representation. Gait asy…

Dust Under the Radar: Rethinking How to Evaluate the Impacts of Dust Events on Air Quality in the United States.

Dust is an important and complex constituent of the atmospheric system, having significant impacts on the environment, climate, air quality, and human health. Although dust events are common across many regions of the United States, their impacts are not often prioritized in air quality mitigation strategies. We argue that there are at least three factors that result in underestimation of the social and environmental impact of dust events, making them receive less attention. These include (a) sparse monitoring stations with irregular spatial distribution in dust-influenced regions, (b) inconsi

Re-Arming the Immunological Radar: The Translational Landscape of Dendritic Cell-Centric Nanotherapeutics and Microenvironment Remodeling for Osteosarcoma.

For decades, survival rates in metastatic Osteosarcoma (OS) have starkly plateaued. The persistent failure of immune checkpoint blockade underscores a critical reality: the true therapeutic bottleneck is not merely exhausted T cells, but a profound upstream defect in antigen presentation by Dendritic cells (DCs). To overcome this, this review comprehensively outlines the translational landscape of DC-centric therapeutics in OS, tracing the paradigm shift from foundational ex vivo cellular vaccines to advanced in situ vaccination strategies. Specifically, we highlight how intelligent biomateria

Risk validation of a new quantitative score for clinical control of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The RADAR score.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical control has been proposed as a composite endpoint in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), assessable through the COPD Clinical Control Questionnaire (CCOq). A new score, derived from the CCOq, and termed as RADAR (Rescue medication, Acute exacerbations, Dyspnea, physical Activity, and Risk) has been developed. This study aimed to validate the RADAR score by analyzing its predictive value for future risk and health status. METHODS: A 12-month prospective observational study was conducted in stable COPD patients. Clinical control was assessed at 3 months using both …

Validity and reliability of sprint force-velocity profiling in elite football: Comparison of MySprint, GPS, and radar devices.

The aims were to examine the validity and within-session inter-trial, intra- and interrater reliability of sprint force-velocity profiling (FVP) techniques in elite football. Twelve elite youth football players from an English Premier League academy participated in this study. A 30-m maximal effort linear sprint testing protocol was conducted, simultaneously measured using the MySprint app, GPS units, and radar device to derive theoretical maximal horizontal force (F0), theoretical maximal running velocity (V0), and the overall orientation of the profile (FVslope). There were significant diffe…

Below-the-Radar: A Case of Extensive Osseous Metastasis of Prostate Cancer Confined Exclusively to One Lower Limb.

Osseous metastases are a common finding in prostate cancer, usually affecting the central skeleton. Metastases in the peripheral skeleton are less frequent but can occur as isolated findings as well. Therefore, imaging protocols limited to the trunk may miss such lesions and extended range (total-body) PSMA-PET/CT may be helpful for comprehensive evaluation, especially when peripheral metastases are suspected, for example, due to clinical symptoms.

Inflammation Assessed by Latent Profiling is Associated with Stress and Suicidality but not Depression: Findings from the RADAR Cohort Study.

Past research has suggested that sexual and gender minorities experience elevated levels of systemic inflammation which in turn has been linked to worse mental health outcomes. Therefore, the goals of this work are to develop a better understanding of the relationship between mental health variables and inflammation among this high-risk population. Data were collected among a sample of young men who have sex with men and transgender women (YMSM/TGW, N=685) aged 16-20 at the time of enrollment. Multiplex plasma cytokine and inflammatory biomarkers were quantified. Mental health variables were s

Application of Radar Measurements in Neural-Dynamic and Game-Based Safe Ship Controls in Multi-Object Passing Situations.

Radar sensors, which enable the identification of the navigational situation and a preliminary assessment of collision risk, form the basis for safe ship control. This paper presents the author's quantitative methods for assessing collision risk in the context of multi-ship navigation, and then synthesizes safe control methods. The author proposes four neural domain variants and three mathematical models of collision risk. Proprietary methods are presented: neural-dynamic control (NDC) and game-based control (GC). An experimental comparison of these control methods is conducted using data from…

Event-Based Bidirectional People Counting Using a Spatiotemporal Neural Network and a Single 77 GHz MIMO FMCW Radar.

Accurate bidirectional people counting at room entrances is essential for reliable occupancy estimation, yet radar-based methods remain challenged when reflections from multiple individuals temporarily merge or when people move simultaneously in opposite directions. This study presents a hybrid event-based method for bidirectional people counting using a single 77 GHz multiple-input multiple-output frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar. Unlike conventional tracking-based approaches, the proposed method treats a complete doorway passage as one event and does not require continuous individua…

A feasibility study on non-invasive and non-contact jugular venous pulse measurement using 60 GHz FMCW radar.

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) reflects right atrial pressure and provides diagnostic insight into cardiovascular and pulmonary health. However, reliable assessment remains difficult due to neck adiposity, anatomical variability and suboptimal positioning. Although central venous catheterization is the gold standard, its invasive nature restricts routine or long-term use. This study introduces a non-invasive method for JVP estimation using a 60 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. The system captures venous pulsations at the skin surface and applies eigenbeamforming to enhance…

Development of flood detection framework integrating Synthetic Aperture Radar polarimetry and machine learning for semi-urban vegetation systems.

Semi-urban vegetation system includes vegetation partly managed by humans and partly growing naturally. It plays a vital role in ecosystem stability but are vulnerable to floods across the world highlighting the need for strategies to enhance resilience to climate change. However, detecting floods is difficult using Earth Observation due to complex scattering between radar signals and varied surface conditions. To address this, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) polarimetry provides information to distinguish scattering patterns of flooded from non-flooded areas. The study proposes a flood detecti…

Long-term ground penetrating radar monitoring of a small volume DNAPL release in a natural groundwater flow field.

An earlier field experiment at Canadian Forces Base Borden by Brewster and Annan [Geophysics 59 (1994) 1211] clearly demonstrated the capability of ground penetrating radar (GPR) reflection profiling to detect and monitor the formation of DNAPL layers in the subsurface. Their experiment involved a large volume release (770 L) of tetrachloroethylene into a portion of the sand aquifer that was hydraulically isolated from groundwater flow by sheet pile walls. In this study, we evaluated the ability of GPR profiling to detect and monitor much smaller volume releases (50 L). No subsurface confining…

Impact of sensing modality on surrogate safety metrics: A radar-camera fusion framework for signalized intersection approach monitoring.

Camera systems are common in surrogate safety analysis at signalized intersections, but their velocity estimates remain underexamined. For approach-lane following, frame-to-frame position differencing introduces errors from bounding-box jitter and perspective distortion that propagate into Time-to-Collision (TTC) and a longitudinal following time gap (FTG). We develop a roadside radar-camera fusion framework combining Doppler measurements with CCTV detections using geometric association and a learned confidence model, evaluated against drone trajectories at two intersections. Unfiltered camera…

High-Resolution Real-Time Impulse Radar Using Software-Defined Radio: A Step-by-Step Implementation with USRP X310.

Software-defined radio (SDR) has become an attractive platform for radar research due to its flexibility, compact size, and ability to reconfigure radar methods for different situations. However, achieving high-resolution time-domain radar with SDR remains challenging due to demanding requirements for data throughput, sampling rate, and hardware configuration. Frequency-modulated radar implementations face similar limitations, often suffering from slow data acquisition and increased system complexity including exact waveform linearity, phase coherence, frequency-stepping control, and computati…

Dual-Channel Scale-Adaptive Clutter Suppression with Confidence-Derived Gating for Microwave Inspection of Curved Radar-Absorbing Materials.

Microwave imaging is promising for non-contact inspection of radar-absorbing materials (RAMs); however, strong structured non-damage responses in reconstructed microwave images can resemble surface defects and trigger false detections, while hard masking may remove weak damage responses near ambiguous boundaries. To address these issues, this paper proposes dual-channel scale-adaptive clutter suppression with confidence-derived gating as an application-specific front end for surface-damage detection in curved RAM specimens. A normalized microwave-response map and a fixed morphology-enhanced ma…

Advancing Cycling Safety: On-Bike Alert System Utilizing Multi-Layer Radar Point Cloud Clustering for Coarse Object Classification.

Cyclists are considered to be vulnerable road users (VRUs) and need protection from potential collisions with cars and other vehicles induced by unsafe driving, dangerous road conditions, or weak cycling infrastructure. Integrating mmWave radars into cycling safety measures presents an efficient solution to this problem given their compact size, low power consumption, and low cost compared to other sensors. This paper introduces an mmWave radar-based bike safety system designed to offer real-time alerts to cyclists. The system consists of a low-power radar sensor affixed to the bicycle, connec…
