Technologically enhanced natural radionuclides in hard coal fly ash and associated radiological hazard assessment using RESRAD modeling.

Coal fly ash (CFA) generated by thermal power plants is classified as technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM) that poses potential hazards to human health and the environment. This study assesses the radiological hazards associated with CFAs from the Çatalağzı thermal power plant, Türkiye's pioneering domestic hard-coal-fired thermal power plant that produces approximately 750,000 tons of silico-aluminous CFA annually. The mean activity concentrations of 228Ra, 226Ra, and 40K measured in CFA samples by gamma-ray spectrometry with a high purity germanium detec

Formulation Optimization and Performance Prediction of Red Mud Particle Adsorbents Based on Neural Networks.

Red mud (RM), a bauxite residue, contains hazardous radioactive wastes and alkaline material and poses severe surface water and groundwater contamination risks, necessitating recycling. Pretreated RM can be used to make adsorbents for water treatment. However, its performance is affected by many factors, resulting in a nonlinear correlation and coupling relationship. This study aimed to identify the best formula for an RM adsorbent using a mathematical model that examines the relationship between 11 formulation types (e.g., pore-assisting agent, component modifier, and external binder) and 9 p

Gamma and X-ray radiation on mating and sperm transfer in sterile Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Ionizing radiation is widely used in insect sterilization for pest control using the Sterile Insect Technique, which consists of the mass rearing of insects and their irradiation with gamma rays to release them in target areas where they will mate with wild females. However, there is a concern and controversy about the nuclear origin applied in this technique. One alternative for sterilization is the use of X-rays, which do not have a nuclear origin, are easier to operate, and do not generate radioactive waste. Here, we compared the sexual competitiveness of Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha luden

Migration mechanisms of Cs, U(VI), and Th(IV) in granite-filled fractures under competitive sorption conditions: A kinetic analysis integrating transport and desorption dynamics.

Accurate prediction of co-transport of multiple radionuclides within geological barriers remains a core challenge in the long-term safety assessment of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repositories. This study investigates the co-transport of three representative nuclides-Cs, U(VI), and Th(IV)-through granite-filled single fracture, integrating breakthrough experiments with sequential desorption tests to establish a kinetic framework for their transport-desorption process. A three-site nonequilibrium kinetic model was applied to inversely simulate breakthrough curves, yielding quantitative r

Effects of carbonate on ferrihydrite transformation in alkaline media.

Alkaline media widely exist in natural and engineered systems such as semiarid/arid areas, radioactive waste sites, and mine tailings. In these settings, the commonly occurring iron (oxyhydr)oxides differed in their ability to influence the fate of nutrients and contaminants. Due to the substantially increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, carbonate stands to increase in these media. However, how increasing carbonate affects the transformation of poorly crystalline iron (oxyhydr)oxides (e.g., two-line ferrihydrite) under alkaline conditions still remains unclear. Here, kineti

Radioactivation and Decommissioning of Medical Linear Accelerators: A Review.

Medical linear accelerators (LINACs) operating above 8-10 MV produce induced radioactivity in machine components and treatment vault structures through photonuclear reactions and subsequent neutron capture. As the global installed base of LINACs exceeds 14,000 units and demand continues to grow, an increasing number of machines are reaching end-of-life, making the safe disposal of radioactivated components a pressing practical concern for healthcare institutions. This review covers the radioactivation process in medical LINACs, beginning with the physics of photonuclear interactions and neutro

Effect of Carbide Slag on Removal of Na+/K+ from Red Mud Based on Water Leaching.

Red mud (RM) is a hazardous solid waste discharged from the alumina production process. The stock of RM is very large, and it has strong alkalinity and certain radioactivity, which makes it have a very serious adverse effect on the environment. Many scholars have carried out extensive experimental investigations on the minimization, hazard-free treatment, and reutilization of RM, and encouraging results have been obtained. However, reutilization of RM has been restricted mainly due to its complex composition and strong alkalinity. In this study, carbide slag, a byproduct of acetylene productio

Transplacental uptake of glucose is decreased in embryonic lethal connexin26-deficient mice.

Mice that harbor a targeted homozygous defect in the gene coding for the gap junctional protein connexin26 died in utero during the transient phase from early to midgestation. From day 10 post coitum onwards, development of homozygous embryos was retarded, which led to death around day 11 post coitum. Except for growth retardation, no gross morphological alterations were detected between homozygous connexin26-defective embryos and wild-type littermates. At day 9 postcoitum, when chorioallantoic placenta started to function, connexin26 was weakly expressed in the yolk sac epithelium, between sy

Radiation Dose and Solid Cancer Mortality Risk in the Techa River and East Urals Radioactive Trace Cohorts in 1950-2016.

The objective of the work was to estimate the dose dependence of mortality risk from solid cancers in a cohort that includes members of two cohorts of residents of the Southern Urals who received chronic environmental low-dose, low-dose-rate radiation exposure from releases of the Mayak Plutonium Production Association. These analyses use dose and dose uncertainty estimates from a recently developed Monte-Carlo dosimetry system. The 47,950 members of the cohort include the Techa River Cohort of people who lived in the villages on the Techa River between 1950 and the end of 1960 and the East Ur

Capacity-associated variability of naturally occurring radionuclides in coal combustion slag: probabilistic radiological risk assessment and multi-scenario exposure modelling.

Coal combustion generates large volumes of mineral residues containing naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), whose radiological characteristics vary systematically with plant operational scale and fuel properties. Understanding the factors governing this variability is essential for radiological risk assessment and sustainable management of coal combustion residues. This study investigates the capacity-associated variability of radionuclide activity concentrations (226Ra, 232Th, 40K) in coal combustion slag using a dataset of 251 samples collected from 18 Polish power plants with c

Pseudo-сolloidal species of actinides in contaminated aquifers. Insights from experimental and modeling approaches.

The release of actinides into the environment poses a significant risk of their uncontrolled migration in various physical and chemical forms. A key migration mechanism for all actinides is their pseudocolloidal transport, which occurs through sorption onto suspended particles of soils, clays, iron oxides and hydroxides, and other colloids surface in groundwater. This phenomenon facilitates their potential transport over considerable distances, creating additional environmental risks. The behavior of these pseudocolloidal particles is currently not well understood and is highly dependent on a

Impacts of environmental decontamination on the rebuilding of returnees' lives after the Fukushima accident.

Environmental decontamination after a nuclear disaster not only contributes to reducing the public's exposure to radiation, it also introduces waste disposal issues arising from the decontamination process. In addition to that issue, the optimisation of decontamination efforts necessitates the consideration of various environmental, economic, and societal factors. Stakeholders' perspectives are important for identifying the multifaceted aspects to be considered. We conducted a semi-structured interview survey in 2019 with ten residents in a rural community in Fukushima, Japan, which experience

Strontium transport facilitated by bentonite and illite colloids with breakthrough tailing characterized by a fractional memory and kinetic exchange model.

Colloid-facilitated transport plays a critical role in the long-distance transport of radionuclides in geological media, particularly in scenarios of nuclear waste disposal. Among various colloids, bentonite colloids formed from the swelling and dispersion of bentonite buffer material can significantly influence radionuclide transport due to their strong sorption capacity and high mobility. However, due to the media heterogeneity, sorption and desorption, traditional advection-dispersion models fail to capture the observed long-tailed desorption and retention behaviors of experimental breakthr

Repercussions of anthropogenic activities on soil contamination: sources, distribution, and health risks of arsenic and other non-radioactive metals in urban Bangladesh.

In recent decades, non-radioactive metals (n-RMs) and metalloids, notably arsenic (As), have become widespread in surface soil due to human-induced activities such as industrial operations, mining, agriculture, and untreated waste disposal. To determine the accumulation of such n-RMs in the soil content, samples were collected from an industrial area in Bangladesh and analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma-mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results indicated that the mean concentrations (mg/kg) of n-RMs followed the order of Mn (428.84 ± 61.30 mg/kg) > Zn (119.03 ± 70.04 mg/kg) > Cr (36.80 ± 8.50

Co-transport and co-release of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids in saturated porous sand columns: Controlling factors and governing mechanisms.

Accurate prediction of the colloid-driven transport of radionuclides in porous media is critical for the long-term safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal repository. However, the co-transport and corelease process of radionuclides with colloids have not been well documented, the intrinsic mechanisms for colloids-driven retention/transport of radionuclides are still pending for further discussion. Thus the controlling factors and governing mechanisms of co-transport and co-release behavior of Eu(III) with bentonite colloids (BC) were discussed and quantified by combining laboratory-sca

Application of beryllium antibodies in risk assessment and health surveillance: two case studies.

This paper demonstrates that current standards used by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to establish an area free from potential beryllium contamination may be inadequate. Using the Beryllium Antibody Assay, it was shown that workers exposed to former beryllium work areas, thought to be sanitized and to meet OSHA standards, experienced statistically significant rises in blood beryllium antibody titers. This finding raises the question of whether the equipment currently required to protect workers in beryllium-laden environments is sufficient. The project mission of deco

Drinking water and cancer.

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between contaminants in drinking water and cancer is reviewed. The reviewed studies cover exposure to: disinfection byproducts; nitrate; arsenic and other metals; volatiles and contaminants from hazardous waste sites; asbestiform fibers; radionuclides; and fluoride. Most investigations are ecologic, with some confirmation of elevated risk from individual-based studies. In the case of waterborne arsenic, and possibly chlorination byproducts, there is a consistent but small body of epidemiologic evidence of an association with one or more types of cancer. N

Acrylic acid functionalized silica composite resin for selective recovery of Ru from simulated high-level liquid waste.

The selective and efficient separation of ruthenium from high-level liquid waste (HLLW) will not only benefit the resource shortage of Ru, a member of platinum group metal, but also advancing the nuclear fuel cycle. However, the separation and recovery of Ru(III) from HLLW faces challenges due to its complex speciation in nitric acid, intense radioactivity, complex competing ions of HLLW. Herein, an acrylic acid functionalized silica composite resin (AA/SiO2) was synthesized via in-situ polymerization for selective adsorption of Ru(III) from simulated HLLW. AA/SiO2 achieved a maximum adsorptio
