In the past, the rat model of experimental vaginal candidosis has been used to study the efficacy of antifungal agents in eradicating acute vaginitis. In the present study, chronic vaginal candidosis was induced to study the natural history of the infection. This study was undertaken to evaluate fetal toxicity of benzodiazepine derivatives, nitrazepam, oxazepam, nimetazepam, clonazepam, diazepam and chlordiazepoxide. In fetotoxicities induced by the oral administration of these six drugs (100 mg/kg), nitrazepam (NTZ) and nimetazepam caused a great damage to the fetus compared with other analogues. The administration of high-dose valproic acid (VPA) (750 mg per kg) consistently produced significant microvesicular steatosis in mature Sprague-Dawley rats after 48 hr. Similar changes occurred in animals pretreated with phenobarbital which received a lower dose of VPA (350 mg per kg), but no steatosis was seen in animals treated with the low-dose VPA alone. Lasiocarpine, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid, was fed at a dietary concentration of 50/10(6) for 55 weeks, to 20 male F-344 rats. Malignant tumours developed in 17/20 animals between 48 and 59 weeks. Forty-five percent (9/20) developed angiosarcomas of the liver and 35% (7/20) had hepatocellular carcinomas. Other tumours included malignant adnexas tumour of the skin (1 rat) and lympohoma (1 rat). Lung metastases were observed in 4 animals with angiosarcoma of the liver and one animal with hepatocellular carcinoma. From one animal, angiosarcoma was successfully transplanted through 4 generations.

A technique for surgical removal of the caecum in young rats is described. Because the technique does not involve end-to-end ileocolonic anastomosis, it is much easier to perform than others described in the literature. The operation was successfully performed on 160 small rats which were afterwards used in nutritional experiments.
