Toxic effects of topically administered Betagan, Betoptic, and Timoptic on regenerating corneal epithelium.

Re-epithelialization of 40 iatrogenic cornea ulcers produced in rabbits with iodine vapour burn were studied after topical administration of Betagan, Betoptic or Timoptic. At 24 hours there was no statistical difference in the wound healing rates among all the treated animal groups. At 48 hours, all the drug-treated groups were significantly different from the control group (p less than 0.05). There was no difference between the Betagan and Betoptic treated groups but the Timoptic-treated group was slower (p less than 0.05) than the Betoptic treated group, while the difference between the Timo…

Treatment of chronic erosions of junctional epidermolysis bullosa with human epidermal allografts.

We have successfully treated chronic central facial erosions of a patient with junctional epidermolysis bullosa using cultured epidermal allografts. Keratinocytes isolated from a skin biopsy of the patient's biological mother were used to generate the epidermal allografts. Significant re-epithelialization occurred during the course of four grafting procedures. Cultured epidermal allografts appear to be a promising method for treatment of chronic erosions of junctional epidermolysis bullosa.

[Lyell's syndrome: study of a clinical case].

The Authors report a case of Lyell's syndrome. Previous administration of sulfadossine was identified as the precipitating cause of the syndrome. The clinical history and the treatment of the case are described. Two aspects of the latter were considered to be particularly important: a careful control of the hydroelectrolytic balance and positive action to favour the rapid re-epithelialization of the cutaneous area affected.

Research advances on postbiotics in promoting skin wound healing: mechanisms, formulations, and clinical translation.

Wound healing is a complex process involving different cell types, molecules and stages in the dermis, epidermis and associated microbiome. Chronic wounds caused by pressure, diabetes, or immunodeficiency often have huge economic and therapeutic costs. Postbiotics, in particular inactivated bacteria, cell components and metabolites, are emerging as novel treatments targeting the skin microbiome and provide precise treatment options for wound healing, inflammation, angiogenesis and re-epithelialization. We review the positive regulatory role of different microbial communities in skin healing; e…

Collagen membrane loaded with doxycycline through hydroxypropyl chitosan microspheres for the early reconstruction of alkali-burned cornea.

Corneal alkali burn is one of the most devastating ophthalmic emergencies correlated with remarkable morbidity resulting in severe visual im … n of MMP-9 and -13 in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the membrane accelerated the corneal complete re-epithelialization and promoted early reconstruction within the first week. Overall, Dox-HCM/Col was a promising biomaterial membrane for treating alkali-burned cornea in the early stage, and our attempt may provide a clinically feasible method for the ocular surface …

Healing of the urethral plate after deep incision: does catheterization change the course of this process?

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the sequence of healing process as well as possible effects of stent placement on the healing process after … ing 14-21 days, evaluation progression of tissue healing along with increasing vessel formation and re-epithelialization were demonstrated. Although the incision edges did show evident approximation, no sign of fibrosis could be demonstrated in these specimens. CONCLUSION: We may say that tissue healing with a desired and complete re-epithelialization could be achiev …

[Multimodal therapy for peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum with topical cyclosporine].

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic disease. Clinically it shows a rapidly evolving painful ulceration with undermined violaceous wound edges. Peristomal PG is particularly resistant to treatment due to mechanical irritation. Two cases illustrate a multimodal therapeutic concept based on topical cyclosporine, hydrocolloid dressing and systemic glucocorticoids. In one patient re-epithelialization was attained after 7 weeks and the other patient experienced downsizing of the wound edges over 5 months.

Human papilloma virus proliferation in a healing burn.

A 4-year-old boy sustained a superficial burn to his finger at the site of a viral papilloma. The burn was treated conservatively. During re-epithelialization the human papilloma virus (HPV) incorporated its genome in the regenerating cells, leading to a verruca as large as the original burn. Diagnosis was reinforced by a history from the patient's mother. Complete resolution of this complication was achieved with topical therapy.

Risk of Induction of Corneal Neovascularization with Topical Erythropoietin: An Animal Safety Study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the pro-angiogenic effect of topical erythropoietin on cornea in chemical burn-injured rabbit eyes. METHODS: The corneal alkali-burn injury was induced in 10 eyes of 10 rabbits using filter paper saturated with 1.0 mol sodium hydroxide. The eyes were categorized into the treatment group (n = 5) that received topical erythropoietin (3000 IU/mL) every 8 hr for one month versus the control group (n = 5) that received normal saline every 8 hr for one month. All eyes were treated with topical ciprofloxacin every 8 hr until corneal re-epithelialization was complete. Corneal epi…

Inhibition of tumor necrosis factor improves conventional steroid therapy for Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis in a cohort of patients.

BACKGROUND: Systemic steroid therapies for Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) have been challenged because of t … f the initial steroid treatment and the duration of the acute stage, hospitalization stay, and skin re-epithelialization. Although both therapies significantly reduced IL-15 levels; the combination therapy also decreased IL-6 and IL-18 levels. While the level of IL-15 was positively correlated with skin re-epithelialization time in both groups, the level of IL-6 serve …

'See-saw' expression of microRNA-198 and FSTL1 from a single transcript in wound healing.

Post-transcriptional switches are flexible effectors of dynamic changes in gene expression. Here we report a new post-transcriptional switch … ance of this regulatory switch in controlling context-specific gene expression to orchestrate wound re-epithelialization. The deleterious effect of failure of this switch is apparent in non-healing chronic diabetic ulcers, in which expression of miR-198 persists, FSTL1 is absent, and keratinocyte migration, re-epithelialization and wound healing all fail to occur.

Cell-matrix interactions modulate interstitial collagenase expression by human keratinocytes actively involved in wound healing.

We reported that interstitial collagenase is produced by keratinocytes at the edge of ulcers in pyogenic granuloma, and in this report, we assessed if production of this metalloproteinase is a common feature of the epidermal response in a variety of wounds. In all samples of chronic ulcers, regardless of etiology, and in incision wounds, collagenase mRNA, localized by in situ hybridization, was prominently expressed by basal keratinocytes bordering the sites of active re-epithelialization indicating that collagenolytic activity is a characteristic response of the epidermis to wounding. No expr…

[Role of skin immunity on wound healing].

The immune system of skin is consisted of different types of immune cells which distribute in epidermis and dermis. By adjusting the microenvironment of wound, these immune cells regulate the migration, proliferation, differentiation and other functions of epidermal cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts, thus taking part in re-epithelialization and formation of granulation tissue and having great influences on wound healing in the end. Acknowledging the interaction of these cells and identifying the targets that regulate the functions of immune cells will provide direction for improving th…
