Tactile-associated recruitment of the cervical cord is altered in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of the brain have shown that cortical reorganization might contribute to a more favourable clinical outcome of multiple sclerosis (MS). In order to assess whether fMRI changes can also be detected in the spinal cord from patients with MS, and to investigate their nature and extent, twenty-five patients and 12 matched healthy controls were scanned during a tactile stimulation of the palm of the right hand. The task-related mean signal change was computed for all activated voxels within the cervical cord and, separately, in the right and left

The neurobiological basis of reading.

The results from studies using positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in adults have largely revealed the involvement of left-hemisphere perisylvian areas in the reading process, including extrastriate visual cortex, inferior parietal regions, superior temporal gyrus, and inferior frontal cortex. Although the recruitment of these regions varies with the particular reading-related task, general networks of regions seem to be uniquely associated with different components of the reading process. For example, visual word form processing is associated wi

Vagal stimulation for reciprocal coupling between glottic and upper esophageal sphincter activities in the canine.

Glottic adduction couples with relaxation of the tonically contracted upper esophageal sphincter (UES) to constitute the end point of pharyngeal swallowing. Together with deglutitive laryngeal elevation, this reciprocal relationship contributes to protecting the lungs from aspiration. Degrees of uncoordination between glottic and upper esophageal sphincters can be seen under diverse circumstances of neurologic damage such as stroke, gastroesophageal reflux, and in the growing elderly population presenting with weaker musculature. We hypothesized that reciprocal coupling between glottic closure

[Central depressant effect of l-tetrahydroberberine-d-camphor sulfonate (THB-CS). Electroencephalographic study].

Effects of l-tetrahydroberberine-d-camphor sulfonate (THB-CS) on spontaneous EEG, arousal response and recruiting response were investigated in rabbits and rats in comparison with those of chlorpromazine. The spontaneous EEG recorded from the motor cortex and hippocampus showed a prominent resting pattern 3-5 min after intravenous administration of THB-CS in doses more than 0.01 mg/kg in rabbits and 30 min after oral administration of the drug in doses more than 1 mg/kg in rats. These effects lasted for 30-60 min after i.v. administration and 60-90 min after oral administration; however, the e

Human sympathetic neuronal discharge and recruitment patterns regulate neuropeptide Y bioavailability.

What is the purpose of sympathetic neuronal action potential (AP) discharge and recruitment patterns for human vascular regulation? This study tested the hypothesis that sympathetic neuronal discharge and recruitment patterns regulate neuropeptide Y (NPY) bioavailability. We used microneurography to record muscle sympathetic nerve activity and a continuous wavelet transform to detect sympathetic APs during a baseline condition and intravenous dexmedetomidine infusion (α2-adrenergic agonist, 10-min loading infusion of 0.225 µg·kg-1; maintenance infusion of 0.1-0.5 µg·kg·h-1) in six healthy indi

Diaphragm motor unit recruitment in rats.

We hypothesized that considerable force reserve exists for the diaphragm muscle (DIAm) to generate transdiaphragmatic pressures (Pdi) necessary to sustain ventilation. In rats, we measured Pdi and DIAm EMG activity during different ventilatory (eupnea and hypoxia (10% O(2))-hypercapnia (5% CO(2))) and non-ventilatory (airway occlusion and sneezing induced by intranasal capsaicin) behaviors. Compared to maximum Pdi (Pdi(max) generated by bilateral phrenic nerve stimulation), the Pdi generated during eupnea (21+/-2%) and hypoxia-hypercapnia (28+/-4%) were significantly less (p<0.0001) than that

Changes in motor axon recruitment in the median nerve in mild carpal tunnel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with mild carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and conventional electrodiagnostic evidence of selective involvement of sensory conduction show changes in motor axon recruitment in the median nerve. METHODS: Wrist-to-abductor pollicis brevis (APB) motor axon conduction was studied by analysing the relationship between the intensity of electrical stimulation and the size of motor response (input-output curve) in 30 CTS patients with conventional electrodiagnostic evidence of selective involvement of sensory conduction. Parameters (threshold, slope and plateau) o

Motor unit behavior during clonus.

Medial gastrocnemius surface electromyographic activity and intramuscular electromyographic activity were recorded from six individuals with chronic cervical spinal cord injury to document the recruitment order of motor units during clonus. Four subjects induced clonus that lasted up to 30 s while two subjects induced clonus that they actively stopped after 1 min. Mean clonus frequency in different subjects ranged from 4.7 to 7.0 Hz. Most of the 166 motor units recorded during clonus (98%) fired once during each contraction but at slightly different times during each cycle. Other motor units f

Contribution of electromyography to the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of cervical disc disease: a study of 114 patients.

The aim of this study is to verify whether EMG has the same diagnostic and prognostic capacity in cervical root syndrome as it does in lumbo-sacral syndromes. Our population includes 114 patients affected by a cervico-brachialgia with EMG denervation provoked by cervical disc disease. 26 patients were submitted to a myelography confirming the discal origin of the syndrome: there were 3 cases of disc protrusion and 23 cases of cervical spondylosis. The agreement between EMG and myelographical data was significant in 20 cases (76.9%). There were no significant differences of evolution between op

Prolonged cortical silent period but normal sensorimotor plasticity in spinocerebellar ataxia 6.

Spinocerebellar ataxia 6 (SCA6) is a hereditary disease characterized by a trinucleotide repeat expansion in the CACNA1A gene and late-onset bilateral cerebellar atrophy. It is unclear if there is significant pathology outside of the cerebellum. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation to assess sensorimotor cortical circuits and cortical plasticity in 8 SCA6 patients and 8 age-matched controls. Behavioral performance was assessed using a rhythmic tapping task. Neurophysiological measures of SCA6 patients showed a prolonged cortical silent period (CSP) but normal MEP recruitment curve, short-

Altered neural recruitment despite dual task performance recovery in athletes with repeat concussion.

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) pose significant challenges to college-aged athletes, eliciting both immediate symptoms and subacute cognitive and motor function impairment. While most symptoms and impairments resolve within weeks, athletes with repeat SRCs may experience heightened risk for prolonged recovery trajectories, future musculoskeletal injuries, and long-term neurocognitive deficits. This includes impaired dual task performance and altered neurophysiology that could persist across the lifespan and elicit future pathophysiology and neurodegeneration. Thus, it is imperative to impro

Corticomotor pathway function and recovery after stroke: a look back and a way forward.

Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability that results in motor deficits and reduced independence. Regaining independence relies on motor recovery, particularly regaining function of the hand and arm. This review presents evidence from human studies that have used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to identify neurophysiological mechanisms underlying upper limb motor recovery early after stroke. TMS studies undertaken at the subacute stage after stroke have identified several neurophysiological factors that can drive motor impairment, including membrane excitability, the recruitment o

The Electrophysiological Findings in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6: Evidence From 24 Patients.

PURPOSE: Peripheral neuropathy has been reported commonly in several spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) types. To date, there is a lack of robust evidence for neuropathy or neuronopathy in SCA type 6 (SCA6). Here, we aim to evaluate the presence of neuropathy or neuronopathy in a cohort of SCA6 patients. METHODS: Twenty-four individuals with genetically confirmed SCA6 underwent detailed neurophysiological assessment. This included nerve conduction studies, and in some, cutaneous silent periods, blink reflexes, tilt table tests, quantitative sudomotor axon reflex tests, and somatosensory (median and

Reproducibility of motor unit number index and multiple point stimulation motor unit number estimation in controls.

INTRODUCTION: Reproducibility of the multiple point stimulation motor unit number estimation (MPS-MUNE) technique was compared with the recently developed motor unit number index (MUNIX) technique. METHODS: MPS-MUNE and MUNIX were performed on 15 healthy subjects at 3 different time-points by the same examiner. Reproducibility was analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV). RESULTS: ICC values for MUNIX and MPS-MUNE were excellent across 3 tests (0.80 and 0.77, respectively), although CV values were significantly lower for MUNIX than MPS-MUNE (P

Neural dissociations between meaningful and mere inconsistency in impression updating.

Recent neuroimaging work has identified a network of regions that work in concert to update impressions of other people, particularly in response to inconsistent behavior. However, the specific functional contributions of these regions to the updating process remain unclear. Using fMRI, we tested whether increases in activity triggered by inconsistent behavior reflect changes in the stored representations of other people in response to behavioral inconsistency, or merely a response to the inconsistency itself. Participants encountered a series of individuals whose behavior either changed in an

Motor unit firing in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other upper and lower motor neurone disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Motor unit recruitment order and firing rate was investigated in healthy subjects, and in small numbers of patients 50years ago. We aimed to investigate firing rate in different disorders, testing the same target muscle with normal strength, to evaluate possible application in diagnosing upper motor neuron (UMN) lesion. METHODS: We studied motor unit firing in the tibialis anterior muscle in six groups of subjects; normal subjects (n=45), patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (n=36), primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) (n=21), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) (n=14), vari

H-reflex, muscle voluntary activation level, and fatigue index of flexor carpi radialis in individuals with incomplete cervical cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) are predisposed to muscle fatigue during voluntary exercise. However, the origin of fatigue is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the motoneuron excitability, muscle activation level, and fatigue properties of the flexor carpi radialis muscle, just below the level of injury. METHODS: Nine individuals with chronic, incomplete cervical cord injury and 9 age-matched healthy individuals were recruited. The authors tested maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), motoneuron excitability by the maximum amplitude of the H-reflex (Hma

Ordered motor-unit firing behavior in acute cerebellar stroke.

Pathological rates of gallbladder salt and water transport may promote the formation of cholesterol gallstones. Because prairie dogs are widely used as a model of this event, we characterized gallbladder ion transport in animals fed control chow by using electrophysiology, ion substitution, pharmacology, isotopic fluxes, impedance analysis, and molecular biology. In contrast to the electroneutral properties of rabbit and Necturus gallbladders, prairie dog gallbladders generated significant short-circuit current (I(sc); 171 +/- 21 microA/cm(2)) and lumen-negative potential difference (-10.1 +/-

[Pharmacological properties of buprenorphine, a new analgesic agent. Part II. (author's transl)].

Pharmacological properties of buprenorphine were compared with those of morphine and pentazocine. Buprenorphine scarcely showed any effects on spontaneous EEGs and sleep-wakefulness cycles. Buprenorphine tended to depress the recruiting and augmenting responses and the spindle burst, and it also inhibited the hypothalamic arousal response. Buprenorphine had weaker emetic action than morphine and protected against apomorphine-induced emesis in the same manner as morphine. Buprenorphine scarcely affected respirations, blood pressure, heart rate, blood flow, ECG, cardiac contractile force, cornar
