Effect of age-related hearing loss on the click-rate-induced facilitation of acoustic reflex thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation was designed to evaluate the effect of age-related hearing loss on the click-rate-induced improvement in the acoustic reflex thresholds. DESIGN: Case-control study. STUDY SAMPLE: Data from five different adults ear-groups (15 ears each) were included in the study: 1. Younger with normal hearing. 2. Older with normal hearing. 3. Older with mild high-frequency loss. 4. Older with moderate high-frequency loss. 5. Older with low- and high-frequency loss. Ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were obtained from the left and/or right ear/s by presenting clicks at the

Acoustic Reflex and House-Brackmann Rating Scale as Prognostic Indicators of Peripheral Facial Palsy in Neuroborreliosis.

Lyme borreliosis is a vector-borne infectious disease characterized by three disease stages. In the areas endemic for borreliosis, every acute facial palsy indicates serologic testing and implies specific approach to the disease. Th e aim of the study was to identify and confirm the value of acoustic refl ex and House-Brackman (HB) grading scale as prognostic indicators of facial palsy in neuroborreliosis. Th e study included 176 patients with acute facial palsy divided into three groups based on serologic testing: borreliosis, Bell's palsy, and facial palsy caused by herpes simplex virus type

[Acoustic reflex in workers using hand-held vibration tools. Combined effects of noise and local vibration].

Combined effects of noise and local vibration on the threshold of acoustic reflex (ART) were investigated. ARTs for three different stimuli (ARTWN, ART1k, ART4k) were determined in workers using hand-held vibration tools. The results obtained from these 72 workers (Group A) were compared with the ARTs in 100 control subjects (Group C) who had normal hearing acuity without any history of occupational noise exposure, as previously reported by the authors. The mean age in group A was 46.6 ranging from 26 to 62. The mean period of noise and vibration exposure was 11.4 years in subjects mainly usin

Effects of single and repeated exposure to apomorphine on the acoustic startle reflex and its inhibition by a visual prepulse.

The acoustic startle reflex (ASR) is inhibited by startle-irrelevant stimuli that briefly precede reflex elicitation. This effect, prepulse inhibition (PPI), is reduced in strength for animals that have received dopamine agonists, such as apomorphine (APO). Reduction in PPI is most evident for weak masked noise prepulses, thus suggesting that APO disrupts the reception of stimuli to the extent that they present a low signal-to-noise ratio. Here we examine the effect of APO on PPI produced by non-masked visual prepulses. Light flashes were given at two intensities, 40, 70, 110, or 220 ms before

The effects of high-dose barbiturates on the acoustic reflex and auditory evoked responses. Two case reports.

The effects of high-dose barbiturates (pentobarbital) on the acoustic reflex, and the auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle-latency (AMR) responses, are illustrated with two case reports. Auditory electrophysiologic data were recorded serially during recovery from therapeutic barbiturate coma. ABR latency remained within normal limits in barbiturate coma, but amplitude of the wave I component was abnormally augmented. Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex activity, and the Pa component of the AMR, were not observed in barbiturate coma, and reappeared with the emergence of brainstem neuro

Effect of eye closure, mental concentration, and nonauditory sensory stimulation on the threshold and magnitude of the acoustic reflex.

Acoustic reflex threshold and magnitude were measured for normal-hearing subjects in four experiments under conditions of: (1) tight and relaxed eyelid closure; (2) eyes open and closed in light, focusing on a spot, reading, and solving a visual maze; (3) tactile stimulation; and (4) performing a mental task. Measurements were susceptance change in millimhos for a 220 Hz probe tone. A 1000 Hz pure-tone and broadband noise presented contralaterally were the stimuli. All factors affected reflex results. Eyelid closure enhanced reflex responses with tight closure involving voluntary muscle tensio

Acoustic startle reflex in patients with chronic stroke at different stages of motor recovery: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic startle reflex (ASR) can be used as a tool to examine reticulospinal excitability. The potential role of reticulospinal mechanisms in the development of spasticity has been suggested but not tested. OBJECTIVE: To examine reticulospinal excitability at different stages of motor recovery in patients with chronic stroke using the ASR. METHODS: Sixteen subjects with hemiplegic stroke participated in the study. We examined ASR responses at rest and contralateral motor overflow during voluntary elbow flexion. RESULTS: ASR responses in impaired biceps muscles showed different

Effects of hearing levels at the activator and other frequencies upon the expected levels of the acoustic reflex threshold.

Multiple linear regression equations were derived to define the expected levels of acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz predictable from hearing levels at 500-4000 Hz in 646 ears. When the hearing level at the activator frequency is less than or equal to 50 dB HL, ARTs tend to be best defined by a constant value of 86-90 dB HL with small adjustments due to the loss at the activator or higher frequencies. When the hearing level at the activator frequency is 55-90 dB HL, the ART is best predicted by a constant plus the degree of loss at that frequency plus the loss at 4000

[Early social isolation increases aggression and impairs a short-term habituation in acoustic startle reflex in rats].

Prolonged social isolation in early ontogeny leads to various changes in behavior and cognitive dysfunction in adult rats; however, data on the disorders are contradictory. In the present work, we studied the effects of early social isolation in Wistar rats by indices of psychomotor activity, aggression, anxiety, depression-like behavior, sensorimotor reactivity and short-term habituation of acoustic startle reflex. On the 24th postnatal day, rats were weaned from the dams and housed in individual cages for nine consecutive weeks. Animal behavior was evaluated at the age of one, two and three

Measurement of the distribution of medial olivocochlear acoustic reflex strengths across normal-hearing individuals via otoacoustic emissions.

A clinical test for the strength of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) might be valuable as a predictor of individuals at risk for acoustic trauma or for explaining why some people have trouble understanding speech in noise. A first step in developing a clinical test for MOCR strength is to determine the range and variation of MOCR strength in a research setting. A measure of MOCR strength near 1 kHz was made across a normal-hearing population (N = 25) by monitoring stimulus-frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) while activating the MOCR with 60 dB SPL wideband contralateral noise. Altered Acoustic Startle Reflex, Prepulse Inhibition, and Peripheral Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Morphine Self-Administered Rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that opiate withdrawal may increase anxiety and disrupt brain-derived neurotrophic factor function, but the effects of i.v. morphine self-administration on these measures remain unclear. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were implanted with a catheter in the jugular vein. After 1 week of recovery, the animals were allowed to self-administer either i.v. morphine (0.5 mg/kg per infusion, 4 h/d) or saline in the operant conditioning chambers. The acoustic startle reflex and prepulse inhibition were measured at a baseline and on self-administration day

Gap-Prepulse Inhibition of the Acoustic Startle Reflex (GPIAS) for Tinnitus Assessment: Current Status and Future Directions.

The progress in the field of tinnitus largely depends on the development of a reliable tinnitus animal model. Recently, a new method based on the acoustic startle reflex modification was introduced for tinnitus screening in laboratory animals. This method was enthusiastically adopted and now widely used by many scientists in the field due to its seeming simplicity and a number of advantages over the other methods of tinnitus assessment. Furthermore, this method opened an opportunity for tinnitus assessment in humans as well. Unfortunately, multiple modifications of data collection and interpre

Evaluation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex using sinusoidal off-vertical axis rotation in patients with acoustic neurinoma.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was studied to examine the utility of off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinoma. Subjects were sinusoidally rotated with eyes open in complete darkness at frequencies of 0.4 and 0.8 Hz with a maximum angular velocity of 60 degrees /s at either earth-vertical axis rotation (EVAR) or OVAR. Thirteen patients with acoustic neurinomas were investigated. Results showed that VOR gain during OVAR at 0.8 Hz and in a 30 degrees nose-up position in patients with internal auditory canal tumors was significantly less than the gain measured du
