Prolonged grief in refugees, parenting behaviour and children's mental health.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience bereavement, and as a result they suffer elevated rates of prolonged grief disorder. Evidence also indicates that elevated rates of psychological disturbance in refugee children can be associated with parental mental health. This study examined the extent to which prolonged grief disorder in refugees is associated with their parenting behaviour and in turn with their children's mental health. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 a

Complexities of conducting research in adolescent refugees resettling in Australia.

Adolescent refugees resettling in Australia are a vulnerable and marginalised population. Dedicated research to help better understand their health-care needs remains scarce. There are multiple complexities which may deter health professionals from conducting research with this population. Health-care system barriers, such as lack of adolescent- and refugee-specific health-care services, complicate comprehensive data collection. Limited investigator knowledge pertaining to culturally appropriate research in a population with limited English proficiency or a history of trauma can have an impact

Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in Syrian refugees to Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Canada has accepted more than 25,000 Syrian refugees fearing persecution in their homeland. Canadian guidelines recommend screening recent refugees from high incidence countries for tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI). The prevalence of TB in this population is unknown. A refugee clinic in Edmonton presented a unique opportunity to estimate prevalence of TB and LTBI in Syrian refugees arriving in Canada. METHODS: In January 2016, 100 consecutive Syrian refugees were screened for TB with clinical assessment and LTBI using QuantiFERON Gold In-Tube assay (QFT-GIT). Patie

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis among Syrian Refugees in Jordan: a Retrospective Study.

The aim of this study is to investigate cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) among Syrian refugees residing in Jordan. A total of 558 Syrian refugee patients were clinically diagnosed with cutaneous leishmaniasis during 2010-2016. For each patient, sex, age, location, and number of lesions were recorded. Of the total 558 CL cases among Syrian refugees, 514 (92.1%) were classified as imported, 14 (2.5%) as locally acquired infection, and 30 (3.4%) of cases unclassified due to lack of information. By gender, 306 (55%) were males and 252 (45%) were females. Ages ranged between 1 and 78 years (17.3 ± 16.3

Risk Factors for Varicella Susceptibility Among Refugees to Toronto, Canada.

Several outbreaks of varicella have occurred among refugees. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of varicella susceptibility among refugees, and identify risk factors for varicella susceptibility. All refugees rostered at Crossroads Clinic in Toronto, Canada in 2011-2014 were included in our study. Varicella serology was assessed at the initial visit. Refugees' age, sex, education, time since arrival, and climate and population density of birth country were abstracted from the chart. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify risk factors for varicella susceptibility. 1063 refugees

Survey of tuberculosis drug resistance among Tibetan refugees in India.

SETTING: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem among Tibetans living in exile in India. Although drug-resistant TB is considered common in clinical practice, precise data are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of drug-resistant cases among new and previously treated Tibetan TB patients. DESIGN: In a drug resistance survey in five Tibetan settlements in India, culture and drug susceptibility testing (DST) for first-line drugs were performed among all consecutive new and previously treated TB cases from April 2010 to September 2011. DST against kanamycin (KM), ethionamide, p

Albendazole therapy and enteric parasites in United States-bound refugees.

BACKGROUND: Beginning on May 1, 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended presumptive treatment of refugees for intestinal parasites with a single dose of albendazole (600 mg), administered overseas before departure for the United States. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 26,956 African and Southeast Asian refugees who were screened by means of microscopical examination of stool specimens for intestinal parasites on resettlement in Minnesota between 1993 and 2007. Adjusted prevalence ratios for intestinal nematodes, schistosoma species,

Social support, coping and posttraumatic stress symptoms in young refugees.

Young refugees from the former Yugoslavia commonly testify to having been exposed to multiple, traumatic experiences, which may contribute to the development of serious mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Using selfreport scales the present study investigated the prevalence of PTSD as well as factors associated with PTSD in a group of 119 Bosnian refugee youths (mean age 18.5). The group was special in that they had no right to seek asylum in the host country for the first couple of years of their stay. It is suspected that this circums

Impact of September 11 on refugees and those seeking asylum.

September 11, 2001 profoundly affected the American public. We share the views of a cohort of refugees and those seeking asylum from the Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights. Of the 63 individuals from 18 countries interviewed, many had concerns about their personal safety following September 11, as well as fears related to deportation, arrest, detention, imprisonment, discrimination, physical violence and the destruction of property, and war. Asylum seekers were more likely than refugees to have concerns about their safety before their departure and during flight, as well as fear

Simple spectacles for adult refugees on the Thailand-Burma border.

PURPOSE: This article describes the development of, and outputs from, a program in which trained refugee health workers provided spherical lenses to adult refugees along the Thailand-Burma border. METHODS: Between 1998 and 2001, the International Rescue Committee trained 48 refugee health workers in basic refraction courses. Once trained, these health workers conduct weekly eye clinics in several refugee camps and one migrant community covering a total population of 142,000. We supplied spherical lenses in 11 powers from +1.00 to +4.00 in 0.50-D steps and from -1.00 to -2.50 in 0.50-D steps.

Iron and vitamin A deficiency in long-term African refugees.

Five cross-sectional surveys were conducted in African refugee camps to assess the level of iron deficiency anemia and vitamin A deficiency in populations dependent on long-term international food aid and humanitarian assistance. The prevalence of anemia in children [hemoglobin (Hb) <110 g/L] was high, with >60% affected in 3 of 5 camps. Iron deficiency [serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) >8.5 mg/L] was also high, ranging from 23 to 75%; there was also a strong ecological correlation between the prevalence of iron deficiency and anemia among different camps. Within camps, sTfR predicted the con

Olfactory-triggered panic attacks among Khmer refugees: a contextual approach.

One hundred Khmer refugees attending a psychiatric clinic were surveyed to determine the prevalence of olfactory-triggered panic attacks as well as certain characteristics of the episodes, including trigger (i.e. type of odor), frequency, length, somatic symptoms, and the rate of associated flashbacks and catastrophic cognitions. Forty-five of the 100 patients had experienced an olfactory-triggered panic attack in the last month. Trauma associations and catastrophic cognitions (e.g. fears of a 'wind attack', 'weakness', and 'weak heart') were common during events of olfactory panic. Several ca

[Skin diseases among refugees and immigrants. Four exotic case reports].

The influx of immigrants from outside the Western world, has led to a wider spectrum of dermatological diseases seen by doctors in Denmark. We present four case histories, in which the disease was brought to Denmark from the patient's land of origin. Tropical diseases may present as a skin disease as such, or a generalised disease with skin manifestations, the commonest signs being ulcers, papules, exanthema, changes in pigmentation, and itching.

Eosinophilia in Southeast Asian refugees: evaluation at a referral center.

We determined the cause of persistent eosinophilia in 128 Indochinese refugees for whom initial comprehensive routine screening had failed to yield an explanation. Intestinal parasitism with one or multiple organisms was the cause of eosinophilia in all but six of these patients. Hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis were among the potentially pathogenic organisms most frequently implicated (55% and 38%, respectively). There was no correlation between the age or sex of the patients and the type of infecting organism. We also confirmed the usefulness of a previously described serological test

Changing time perspective and mental health among Southeast Asian refugees.

Little is known about the psychological mechanisms people employ in adapting to extreme circumstances such as becoming refugees. Case studies of refugees making up part of a sample of 1348 persons relocated from Southeast Asia to Vancouver, British Columbia, suggest that altering one's perception of time may be an adaptive strategy. During periods of acute stress, refugees seem to focus on the present to the relative exclusion of past and future. The reemergence of past and future into consciousness brings about a risk for developing depression. Epidemiological data corroborate inferences from
