Effects of thioridazine and visual screening on stereotypy and social behavior in individuals with mental retardation.

Thioridazine and visual screening procedures are effective in reducing the stereotypic behaviors of individuals with mental retardation. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study, using alternating treatments within a multiple-baseline across subjects design, was conducted to assess the effects of two doses of thioridazine (1.25 and 2.5 mg/kg/day) and visual screening, alone and combined, on stereotypy and social behavior of three individuals with profound mental retardation. Functional analyses did not show demand, alone, social attention, or differential reinforcement conditions to maintain t

Stigma toward female smokers: gendered perceptions and moral judgment.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the gendered perceptions surrounding female smoking in Saudi Arabia, where tobacco use is shaped not only by health concerns but also by deeply rooted social norms. METHODS: Employing a qualitative approach, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with 35 Saudi adults (20 women and 15 men), aged 18 and older. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed a clear gendered double standard in smoking-related stigma. Women's smoking was judged more harshly than men's and was often interpreted as a violation of femininity, modesty, moral propriety, and family reputatio

Methamphetamine and social rewards interact to produce enhanced conditioned place preference in male adolescent rats.

Elucidating the influence of social context on drug reward is critical for understanding substance use disorders. Adolescents demonstrate enhanced sensitivity to drug and social rewards. However, the extent to which methamphetamine interacts with social reward in adolescents has not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, the present study used the conditioned place preference (CPP) model to examine the relationship between methamphetamine and social rewards in adolescent male rats. Sprague-Dawley rats (PND 30) were randomly assigned to one of the following four conditioning groups: saline alone

Children's attitudes towards Electronic Gambling Machines: an exploratory qualitative study of children who attend community clubs.

BACKGROUND: This research sought to explore whether children's visual and auditory exposure to Electronic Gambling Machines (EGMs) in community clubs contributed to shaping their attitudes towards these types of potentially harmful gambling products. This research also examined children's knowledge of EGM behaviours in adults within their social networks. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 45 children in a regional area of New South Wales, Australia. All children had attended a club that contained gambling products in the previous 12 months. Face to fa

Environmental Exposures and Computational Mechanisms in Psychosis Risk: Insights from a Multi-Site Cohort.

This study leverages computational psychiatry to examine weighting of perceptual priors and reinforcement learning (RL) as potential pathways connecting environmental stressors to psychosis risk. 506 participants with psychosis-like experiences (PLE) and 328 controls performed behavioral tasks measuring these mechanisms, in addition to symptom assessments. Participants' childhood area social fragmentation and childhood opportunities were also extracted. The association between environmental, computational and clinical measures was assessed, as were mediation pathways. Higher social fragmentati

Dual-value reinforcement learning with delayed local welfare feedback in spatial public goods games.

Cooperation is difficult to sustain in public-goods dilemmas because contributing can reduce an individual's immediate payoff, while benefits to the surrounding group may emerge only after several rounds. We introduce a dual-value reinforcement-learning model for a spatial public goods game that evaluates these two consequences separately. One value system learns from the individual payoff obtained after each action, whereas the other learns from local welfare accumulated over multiple rounds. The two evaluations are combined only when an action is selected. Within the tested settings, numeric

The class specific effects of compliance training with "do" and "don't" requests: analogue analysis and classroom application.

Two experiments are reported in which the relationship between compliance with "do" and "don't" requests was examined with developmentally disabled children. In Experiment 1, a multiple baseline design across subjects with counterbalanced treatment conditions was used to evaluate a compliance training program composed of four phases: (a) baseline, during which no consequences were delivered for compliance, (b) reinforcement for compliance with one targeted "do" request, (c) reinforcement for compliance with one targeted "don't" request, and (d) follow-up with reinforcement on a variable ratio

Relationship between quality of life, self-efficacy and social support in patients with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) causes patients' perceptions of self-efficacy and social support to decline. Patients with MS have to change day-to-day activities and encounter various physical and psychosocial problems while adapting to the new lifestyle. AIMS: The research aimed to define the quality of life, self-efficacy and social support in patients with MS and to determine the relationship between quality of life, perception of self-efficacy and perceived social support. It is descriptive and correlational research. Data were collected using surveys. METHODS: The sample consisted

Use of the timeout ribbon procedure during community-based instruction.

Involvement in community-based instruction can be adversely affected when students engage in behavior that interferes with participation in instruction. A multiple probe across settings design with an embedded reversal was used to investigate the effectiveness of the nonseclusionary timeout ribbon procedure for two middle-school students with moderate mental retardation in community and school settings. An athletic wristband served as the timeout ribbon, which functioned as the stimulus for the availability of reinforcement. When the student was wearing the wristband, he could earn reinforcers

A Systematic Review of Interventions to Promote Varied Social-Communication Behavior in Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may engage in repetitive social-communication behaviors that can limit their skill acquisition, access to reinforcement, and access to less restrictive settings. Basic and applied research indicates that variability, or the extent to which responses are topographically different from one another, is influenced by antecedent and consequence interventions. Our purpose in this study is to systematically review the literature on interventions to increase variable social-communication behaviors in individuals with ASD. We identified 32 studies through

Digital disconnection: A systematic review of phubbing behavior.

Phubbing, or snubbing others in face-to-face interactions by attending to one's phone, has become an increasingly pervasive social behavior with important psychological and relational consequences. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, synthesizes empirical research from the past decade to examine the antecedents, consequences, and mechanisms of phubbing across social contexts. A comprehensive search of the ScienceDirect database identified 22 peer-reviewed studies spanning romantic relationships, friendships, family interactions, educational environments, and workplace settings

Inhibiting fear memory recall-induced oligodendrogenesis rescues PTSD-like behaviors.

Recurrent re-experiencing traumatic memory is known as a common symptom in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients, and its severity is closely related to the progression and prognosis of PTSD. Notably, some individuals with PTSD exhibit white matter abnormalities. Myelin constitutes a critical structure within white matter, and myelination in the adult brain has been demonstrated to actively regulate the consolidation of remote memories. However, the dynamics of myelin after re-experiencing traumatic stressors and their functional significance remain largely unexplored. Here, we develo

The effect of social anxiety on threat acquisition and extinction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Although exposure-based therapy has been found to be effective at alleviating symptoms of social anxiety disorder, it often does not lead to full remission, and relapse after treatment is common. Exposure therapy is based on theoretical principles of extinction of conditioned fear responses. However, there are inconsistencies in findings across experiments that have investigated the effect of social anxiety on threat conditioning and extinction processes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine whether elevated levels of social anxiety are associated with abnormalities in thr

Neither saintly nor psychotic: a narrative systematic review of the evolving Western perception of voice hearing.

We present a social-historical perspective on the evolution of the voice-hearing phenomenon in Western society. Based upon a systematic search from a selection of nine databases, we trace the way hearing voices has been understood throughout the ages. Originally, hearing voices was considered a gifted talent for accessing the divine, but the progressive influence of monotheistic religion gradually condemned the practice to social marginalization. Later, the medical and psychiatric professions of secular society were instrumental in attaching stigma to both voice hearers and the phenomenon itse

The Impact of Prior Activity History on the Influence of Restricted Repetitive Behaviors on Socialization for Children With High-Functioning Autism.

Research has demonstrated that incorporating restricted interests of an individual with autism into recess activities is effective at increasing socialization with typically developing peers. However, certain activity contexts may alter the reinforcing influence of the restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs) depending on an individual's history in that activity. Using an alternating treatment design, this study examined whether an individual's history with an activity affected socialization. RRBs were embedded into activities with a reported positive history (i.e., prior history of positive exp

Situations of Vulnerability, Life Satisfaction, and Social Support of Older Women and Men: Results From the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Situations of vulnerability are associated with reduced life satisfaction. Although social support moderates the influence of situations of vulnerability, little is known about their associations. This study aimed to document situations of vulnerability and examine their association with life satisfaction among older adults, and the moderating effect of social support. Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data (n = 21,491; 73.4 ± 0.04) from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, stratified by sex. Confirmatory factor analysis identified a vulnerability variable from physiological, psycholo

Childhood social anxiety disorder: from understanding to treatment.

Childhood social anxiety disorder is a condition of complex origins. Longitudinal studies of shyness and behavioral inhibition, and twin and family history studies, support a genetic component, but experiences such as family environment, parenting, and traumatic conditioning also are observed. Many children with significant shyness and behavioral inhibition do not develop social anxiety disorder, reinforcing the need for longitudinal studies exploring resiliency and risk factors that can be incorporated into diathesis stress models. Efficacy data regarding cognitive and behavioral therapies an

Digital technology in everyday life: emerging associations with social, mental, and physical health and wellbeing.

The digital determinants of health refer to digitally mediated factors that increasingly shape lifestyle, behaviour, and social connections. Digital devices, infrastructure, and services-ranging from mobile phones, social media and online games to emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence and robotics-have become integral to everyday life in many parts of the world. These technologies are reshaping the way individuals and communities experience social and mental health, facilitating new forms of connection, belonging, and participation. At the same time, these dimensions

Protecting the future child: Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder, easy rescue and the regulation of maternal behaviour.

This paper argues that social contexts of inequality are crucial to understanding the ethics of gestational harm and responsibility. Recent debates on gestational harm have largely ignored the social context of gestators, including contexts of inequality and injustice. This can reinforce existing social injustices arising from colonialism, socio-economic inequality and racism, for example, through increased regulation of maternal behaviour. To demonstrate this, I focus on the related notions of the 'future child' and an obligation of easy rescue, which have been used to discuss the ethics of g
