Autogenic Training in Mental Disorders: What Can We Expect?

Autogenic training (AT) is a well-established self-induced relaxation technique based on autosuggestion. From the past two decades, an increasing number of AT studies strongly suggests the practical usefulness of psychophysiological relaxation in the area of medicine. Despite this interest, to date, limited critical clinical reflection on the application and effects of AT in mental disorders exists. The present paper reviews psychophysiological, psychopathological, and clinical aspects of AT in persons with mental disorders with emphasis on implications for future research and practice. Based

Turning over a new leaf: The health-enabling capacities of nature contact in prison.

In this paper we explore the potential applicability of evidence of health-enabling effects of elements of the built environment - particularly access to nature - deriving from research in healthcare facilities to evidence-based design in the custodial context. Drawing on comparative qualitative research conducted in the UK and the Nordic region, we argue that although available data lack direct comparability, there is evidence that access to nature generates the same health-enabling effects in custody as are recognised in healthcare facilities. Reflecting on the differing political contexts o

Leisure or therapeutics? Snoezelen and the care of older persons with dementia.

Snoezelen is the registered tradename for a multisensory environment approach initially established for purposes of leisure or therapeutics in the special education arena, but now expanding into a variety of client groups and settings, most notably in the care of older persons. Snoezelen is making its way into Australia at a rapid rate despite a lack of evidence-based research. This paper looks at the Snoezelen phenomenon and searches the literature to review the history and contemporary use of this multisensory environmental work. While most articles indicate positive outcomes Snoezelen is no

Practical use of swan-type double-bending gastrofiberscope.

After devising remote-controlled angle to gastrofiberscope in 1964, the authors invented a swan-type double-bending gastrofiberscope in 1967. The double-bending gastrofiberscope does not require any change in a patient's position, for the motion of the tip is sufficient to observe every part of the stomach on supine position. In order to relax the patient both physically and mentally, relaxation of the patient is obtained by taking off this excessive attention on the endoscopic examination. Clear visual field can be obtained at the moment when the fiberscope passes the cardia, by stopping the

Hypnosis and relaxation techniques in the management of temporomandibular disorders: a scoping review.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common causes of orofacial pain, influenced by psychological and behavioural factors. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as hypnosis and relaxation techniques, have been proposed to modulate pain perception, reduce muscle hyperactivity, and improve coping. However, their role in TMD management remains unclear. We conducted a scoping review to synthesize the available evidence on the use of hypnosis and relaxation interventions in adolescents and adults with TMD. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Goo

Current Practices, Experiences, and Views in Clinical Hypnosis: Findings of an International Survey.

An online survey of 691 clinicians who use hypnosis was conducted in 31 countries to gain a broad real-world picture of current practices, views, and experiences in clinical hypnosis. Among 36 common clinical uses, stress reduction, wellbeing and self-esteem-enhancement, surgery preparations, anxiety interventions, mindfulness facilitation, and labor and childbirth applications were the most frequently rated as highly effective (each by ≥70% of raters) in the clinicians' own experience. Adverse hypnosis-associated effects had been encountered by 55% of clinicians but were generally short-lived

Cognitive distraction and relaxation training for the control of side effects due to cancer chemotherapy.

Sixty cancer chemotherapy patients were randomly assigned to one of six conditions formed by a 3(cognitive distraction, relaxation training, no intervention) x 2(high anxiety, low anxiety) factorial design. All patients were followed for five consecutive chemotherapy sessions. Outcome measures included patient reports, nurse observations, and physiological indices. Results indicated that distraction patients reported less nausea prior to chemotherapy and lower systolic blood pressures after chemotherapy than controls. Relaxation training patients reported less nausea prior to chemotherapy and

The current significance of physiotherapeutic measures in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

Physical measures as adjuvant therapy in Parkinson's disease have so far received insufficient investigation from the viewpoint of either their clinical effectiveness or of their theoretical rationale, although they are widely prescribed in practice and contribute a substantial cost factor to the overall treatment. Most attention has been devoted to movement therapy, which may admittedly only achieve minor improvements in motor performance but contributes substantially to subjective improvement of the well-being of the patients and to the maintenance of their physiological functions. Virtual Reality and Relaxation for the Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Comparative Study with Standard Intervention.

Background/Objectives: Modern therapeutic strategies incorporating virtual reality (VR) have emerged as potential treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), a prevalent and debilitating condition that is challenging to cure. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of VR combined with relaxation techniques in patients with GAD by comparing VR-based relaxation with standard mental imagery (MI) relaxation. Methods: Fifty-eight patients with GAD participated in a randomized comparative trial. Specific virtual environments were created using an inexpensive game engine/level editor (GLE).

Comparison of the effectiveness of music and progressive muscle relaxation for anxiety in COPD--A randomized controlled pilot study.

Acute effects of music and relaxation have not been evaluated in hospitalized subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aims to evaluate the acute effects of music and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) in hospitalized COPD subjects after a recent episode of exacerbation. A Randomized controlled study was performed of pre-test post-test design after recruiting 82 COPD subjects from K.M.C hospitals. All patients were admitted for acute exacerbation and were medically stabilized. After being screened for the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 72 subjects were selecte

Mindfulness- and relaxation-based interventions for Premenstrual Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects many women of reproductive age, often disrupting daily activities. Mindfulness- and relaxation-based techniques, such as yoga and progressive muscle relaxation techniques, can alleviate both physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with PMS. This systematic review synthesized existing evidence on the effects of mindfulness and relaxation interventions on the physical and psychosocial functioning of women experiencing PMS. The searches were conducted across five databases (PubMed, CINAHL Complete, ProQuest, MasterFILE Complete, and JSTOR Life Sciences) a

The psychophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder: 2. Effects of applied relaxation.

Muscle relaxation therapy assumes that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients lack the ability to relax but can learn this in therapy. We tested this by randomizing 49 GAD patients to 12 weeks of Applied Relaxation (AR) or waiting. Before, during, and after treatment participants underwent relaxation tests. Before treatment, GAD patients were more worried than healthy controls (n=21) and had higher heart rates and lower end-tidal pCO2, but not higher muscle tension (A. Conrad, L. Isaac, & W.T. Roth, 2008). AR resulted in greater symptomatic improvement than waiting. However, 28% of the AR

Effects of Stress and Relaxation on Central Pain Modulation in Chronic Whiplash and Fibromyalgia Patients Compared to Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Compelling evidence has demonstrated that impaired central pain modulation contributes to persistent pain in patients with chronic whiplash associated disorders (WAD) and fibromyalgia (FM). However, there is limited research concerning the influence of stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in patients with chronic WAD and FM. OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to investigate the effects of acute cognitive stress and relaxation on central pain modulation in chronic WAD and FM patients compared to healthy individuals. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized crossover design was emplo
