Serum vitamin B12, folic acid and haematological variables of 132 Thai vegetarians (64 males and 68 females) were investigated. Forty-seven healthy omnivorous individuals served as controls. No statistical differences in haemoglobin concentration, packed red cell volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration between the vegetarians and controls had been detected. INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell anemia is a monogenic disorder caused by a mutation in the β-hemoglobin gene, resulting in sickle hemoglobin that can polymerize. Presentation and clinical course have significant inter-individual variability and classifying these patients for severity is a challenge.
METHODS: We applied hierarchical clusters with 10 routine laboratory tests to understand if this grouping could be associated with clinical manifestations. We included 145 adult homozygous patients (SS) at an outpatient clinic in a retrospective study.

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a rare bone marrow (BM) disorder characterized by ineffective erythropoiesis, reduced reticulocyte count, normocytic anemia, and the absence of erythroid precursors. Here, we present a rare instance of PRCA occurring after ABO-matched allo-HSCT in a refractory/relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (R/R AML) patient. In this case, the patient received a combination treatment of Gilteritinib, Venetoclax, and Azacitidine. Remarkably, this treatment not only reduced myeloblasts but also facilitated the restoration of erythroid hematopoiesis.

This study evaluated erythropoiesis in 50 infants hospitalized with protein energy malnutrition and in 50 control infants. An 11 year old African boy without previous history was hospitalised for fever and a severe anaemia (haemoglobin = 55 g/L) with low reticulocyte count. Blood smear showed more than 35% of ghost red blood cells which allows the diagnosis of G6PD deficiency (< 1% of normal level). Anaemia was demonstrated as haemolytic and was associated with a drepanocytosis trait. Aspect of red blood cells on blood smear remains important for the diagnosis of congenital or acquired red blood cell diseases, even abnormalities are often of low specificity.
