Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Eyes with Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Optical coherence angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive technique that has been introduced in recent years to detect ophthalmological patholog … plemented in both spectral-domain (SD) and swept-source (SS) OCT machines. Microvascular changes in retinal vein occlusions (RVOs) are visible in both the superficial and deep capillary networks of the retina in OCTA. These visualizations include a decrease in foveal and parafoveal vascular densities, non-perfusion areas, capillary engorgement and telangiectas …

In-Human Robot-Assisted Retinal Vein Cannulation, A World First.

Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) is a blinding disease caused by one or more occluded retinal veins. Current treatment methods only focus on symptom mitigation rather than targeting a solution for the root cause of the disorder. Retinal vein cannulation is an experimental eye surgical procedure which could potentially cure RVO. Its goal is to dissolve the occlusion by injecting an anticoagulant directly into the blocked vein. Given the scale and the fragility of retinal veins on one end and surgeons' limited positioning precision on the other, performing this procedure manually is considered to be…

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY FEATURES OF BRANCH RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION.

PURPOSE: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a novel technology that uses motion contrast instead of dye to generate angiographic images. Using several modalities of OCTA, the authors describe and compare changes observed in branch retinal vein occlusion. METHODS: A case series of three patients with OCTA imaging. RESULTS: Despite presenting at different time frames, the authors found common imaging findings consisting of vascular hypoperfusion, increased tortuosity, and telangiectasia in all their cases. Furthermore, macular edema and intraretinal fluid were noted on the en-f…

A rare case of branch retinal vein occlusion following Sirsasana.

Sirsasana is a type of headstand postural yoga in which the body is completely inverted. It is performed with or without wall support. In th … raised intraocular pressure, decompression retinopathy, glaucomatous visual field defects, central retinal vein occlusion, progression of glaucoma, optic neuropathy, and conjunctival varix thrombosis. We report a case of branch retinal vein occlusion following Sirsasana in a patient with systemic hypertension.

[Branch retinal vein occlusion: high time for cardiovascular risk management].

Cardiovascular risk management is common in patients suffering from manifest cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes mellitus. It is generally accepted that medication is the most effective treatment for reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in these patients. Remarkably, cardiovascular risk management is rare in patients suffering from branch retinal vein occlusion. This common retinal vascular disorder in middle aged and elderly people occurs where a thickened retinal artery compresses the affected vein. Although thrombosis is involved, procoagulant disor…

Central nervous system tuberculosis presenting as branch retinal vein occlusion.

Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) associated with ocular tuberculosis (TB) is a rare presentation of retinal vasculitis but it can also present in the absence of active uveitis. We present a 39-year-old patient with BRVO who slowly developed bilateral papilloedema due to TB in the central nervous system. To our knowledge, this is the first case of systemic central nervous system TB confirmed by biopsy presenting as a branch retinal vein occlusion and shows the importance of extensive causative investigation of BRVO, especially for young patients.

Endogenous erythroid colony formation in patients with retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: The pathophysiology and causes of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) remain largely unknown. Latent forms of myeloproliferative disorders, which are diagnosed by the presence of in vitro endogenous erythroid colony (EEC) formation, are a well-known cause of intraabdominal vein thrombosis. The suspected diagnosis of a latent myeloproliferative disorder in a patient with RVO, based on the presence of EEC formation, led us to evaluate the association between latent myeloproliferative disorders and RVO. DESIGN: Observational case series in a national eye center. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-four patie…

Protein Z levels and central retinal vein or artery occlusion.

OBJECTIVES: Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) are common disorders associated with risk factors for atherosclerosis. Protein Z is a cofactor for the inactivation of activated factor X (Xa) by the protein Z dependent protease inhibitor. Protein Z deficiency was recently linked to increased risk of arterial thrombosis. We investigated whether CRVO and CRAO are associated with low protein Z levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with CRVO, CRAO or recurrent branch retinal vein occlusion were recruited to the study. Protein Z level, lupus anticoagul…

Clinical and angiographic features in nasal branch retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To analyse the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of nasal branch retinal vein occlusion (NBRVO). METHODS: Patients affected by branch retinal vein occlusion observed in the out-patient departments of the Eye Clinic of Trieste between January 1995 and January 1999 were enrolled. RESULTS: Out of 144 patients with branch retinal vein occlusion, 128 (88.9%) were affected by temporal branch retinal vein occlusion (TBRVO), and 16 patients were affected by NBRVO (11.1%). The two groups did not differ as far as systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma and ischaemic hear…

[Experimental research of laser-induced collaterals in retinal vein occlusion].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of establishing chorioretinal venous anastomosis in rabbit eyes with a model of branch retinal vein occlusion METHODS: By using laser photocoagulation, a chorioretinal venous anastomosis was created in rabbit eyes in which a branch retinal vein occlusion had previously been established photochemically. A similar attempt to create an anastomosis was made in the control eyes in which no branch vein occlusion was present. RESULTS: In the 21 eyes with the model of branch retinal vein occlusion, a chorioretinal venous anastomosis formed in 4 eyes …

Essential thrombocythemia and central retinal vein occlusion with neovascular glaucoma.

PURPOSE: We report a case of unilateral central retinal vein occlusion resulting from essential thrombocythemia, a rare myeloproliferative disorder with abnormally increased platelet count. METHODS: A 59-year-old man had central retinal vein occlusion in the left eye as the initial sign of essential thrombocythemia. He later developed neovascular glaucoma and optic disk neovascularization. RESULTS: Laser panretinal photocoagulation, goniophotocoagulation, glaucoma medications, and control of the platelet count were effective treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Early thrombocythemia is associated with s…

Risk factors associated with branch vs. central retinal vein occlusion.

Records of 145 consecutive central and 214 branch retinal vein occlusion (CRVO and BRVO) patients were reviewed retrospectively to determine the differences in risk factors associated with these two diseases. Mean ages and sex ratios of both groups did not differ significantly. Hypertension and hyperopia were significantly more prevalent in BRVO than in CRVO, and elevated intraocular pressure, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and a positive tuberculin skin test were significantly more prevalent in CRVO. We conclude that the causes of the ESR elevation are more significant risk fa…

The Use of Inner Retinectomy to Relieve Inner Retinal Foreshortening Causing Retinal Detachment in the Setting of Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.

A 61-year-old Japanese woman presented with impairment of her left vision due to macular schisis secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion. Her left vision was 20/50, and schisis was observed inferotemporally. She underwent phacoemulsification and aspiration, implantation of the intraocular lens, and removal of the epiretinal membrane and internal limiting membrane. Her visual acuity stabilized ~20/50 for two and a half years after the initial surgery. However, she developed macula-involving retinal detachment, and her visual acuity declined to counting fingers. She underwent pars plana vitre…
