The treatment strategy for an idiopathic retroperitoneal mass has not yet been established. Additionally, differentiating between benign and malignant is a challenge. Herein, we report a case in which we performed partial resection of a mass in a symptomatic patient with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis that mimicked malignancy. A 44-year-old woman with an unremarkable medical history other than gallstones presented with a 1-month history of abdominal pain and repetitive vomiting. Imaging studies identified a large, retroperitoneal mass compressing the duodenum that had grown acutely over t

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune bullous disease associated with underlying neoplasms, both malignant and benign. The most constant clinical presentation of PNP is the presence of intractable stomatitis. Herein we present a 25-year-old male with a 3-month history of refractory stomatitis especially involving the lips and widespread vesiculobullous eruption on his trunk and extremities. The diagnosis of PNP was confirmed based on histological and serological results. Investigation for the underlying neoplasm revealed a retroperitoneal tumorous mass which was biopsied and diagnose

The computed tomographic (CT) body scans of 59 patients and ultrasonograms of 31 patients, all with malignant disease, were reviewed to determine the effect of ascites on the ability to image the retroperitoneum. In 95% of cases evaluated by CT, the retroperitoneal structures were well seen. In 35% of the cases evaluated by ultrasonography, the retroperitoneum was completely obscured by bowel gas and partially obscured in an additional 55%. As a result of this study, it is felt that CT should be the procedure of choice when a thorough evaluation of the retroperitoneum is necessary in patients

The retroperitoneal anatomical space is located below the diaphragm and above the pelvic diaphragm, in the potential space between the posterior parietal peritoneum and the abdominal transverse fascia. Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a common tumor in this region of the body. It typically presents no obvious clinical symptoms in the early stage due to the capaciousness of the area. Usually, however, an increase in tumor volume causes compression of the surrounding tissues and organs, such as intestinal obstruction and urinary obstruction, which leads to prominent symptoms. Primary giant retrope

Schwannoma is a type of tumor originating from Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. In this study, we report a rare case of two giant connected retroperitoneal schwannomas. The patient presented to our department with a 1-day history of abdominal pain and without other symptoms. There were no abnormalities in the patient's tumor markers. Abdominal plain computed tomography (CT) revealed two (combined) retroperitoneal masses appearing as soft tissue-density shadows with uneven internal density, cystic low-density shadows, and patchy calcification shadows. The larger mass measured approximately 1

A 72-year-old woman was transferred to our hospital after being diagnosed with retroperitoneal and ovarian tumors. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a well-defined mass lesion measuring 35 mm on the dorsal side of the descending part of the duodenum that was surrounded by the head of the pancreas and inferior vena cava. In addition, a cystic mass measuring 90 mm was found in the pelvis. Hence, the patient was diagnosed synchronous retroperitoneal tumor and teratoma. Laparoscopic retroperitoneal tumor resection and right adnexectomy were performed. The pathological findings indicated that

Cystic lymphangioma is a rare and benign lymphatic malformation found most often in the first two years of life. Clinical manifestations are diverse and depend on size and site of the lesion. The most frequently affected sites are cervicofacial and axillary areas. The retroperitoneal form is rare. Diagnosis requires imaging but can only be confirmed on the basis of an anatomopathological examination. The treatment of choice is complete surgical removal. However, this is not always feasible due to proximity of vital structures. Some alternative therapies like sclerotic injection and oral drugs

Retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma, a rare vascular tumor, has only 30 PubMed cases. Preoperative diagnostic criteria are unclear and often present asymptomatically until complications such as rupture or compression arise. We present a 73-year-old with chronic abdominal pain and a giant retroperitoneal tumor. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an irregular space-occupying mass in the retroperitoneum, suggesting a retroperitoneal chronic expanding hematoma. Total surgical resection confirmed the diagnosis as retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma.

We report two patients of metastatic retroperitoneal tumours from carcinoma of the bladder, one presenting with a retroperitoneal mass and the other with retroperitoneal fibrosis. Both cases had been previously treated by radiotherapy for invasive transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and had no evident of recurrent tumour in the bladder during follow up or at the time of presentation with secondary tumours. Literature reviews revealed that urothelial tumours from the bladder rarely metastasize to the retroperitoneal space.

We report 4 patients with surgically proved idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. Retroperitoneal fibrosis was diagnosed correctly in 3 of the patients by computerized tomography. On the computerized tomogram, retroperitoneal fibrosis demonstrated a characteristic soft tissue mass enveloping the vessels and ureters. In 2 patients, the follow-up computerized tomogram revealed spontaneous resolution of the mass in the retroperitoneal space. Computerized tomography is one of the most useful methods in the preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up of this disease.
