Echocardiographic (ECHO) findings in 211 consecutive examinations performed at Eldoret Medical Services from August 1992 to May 1994 were analysed. Most patients were referred by physicians from Eldoret and from the surrounding hospitals for assessment of heart failure or a heart murmur. On the basis of the authors' results in treating avulsion fractures of the tuberosity, immobilization in a short leg weightbearing cast for 4 weeks is the preferred treatment. Eighty-one Indian patients received immunotherapy for allergic diseases during 109 pregnancies. Their allergy clinic records were analysed retrospectively and this revealed an incidence similar to or less than the general population with regard to abortion, perinatal mortality, prematurity, toxaemia and congenital malformation. Case records of horses with muscle disorders presenting to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of the University of California, Davis, over a nine year period were evaluated. The objectives of the review were to identify the common myogenic muscle problems and their clinical features. Muscle disease of idiopathic aetiology following exercise was by far the most common condition noted. Other causes of myogenic muscle disorders included congenital, infectious, immune-mediated and nutritional factors.

This report examines the characteristics of 124 patients with typhoid ileal perforation treated over a 17-year period ending in 1986. Three adverse prognostic determinants were identified: prolonged fever/perforation interval, prolonged perforation/operation interval and multiple perforations. Simple closure was performed in 74 patients with a mortality of 31.1%, and trimming of the ulcer with closure in 38 patients with a 7.9% mortality.

UNLABELLED: Sixty-four cases of Salmonellosis were retrospectively analyzed in Jan. 1985 to Dec. 1988 at the department of pediatrics, Veteran General Hospital, Taipei. In this study the data on 200 patients affected by various features of lichen planus (LP) are reported. All subjects were in-patients of the Department of Dermatology, Bari, from 1973 to 1988. In 87% of cases the disease appeared as lichen tuber planus, and in 9% there was involvement of mucous membranes. From Feb. 1962 to Feb. 1982, 54 patients with cancer of the base of tongue were treated in our hospital. There were 44 squamous cell carcinomas and 10 adeno-cystic carcinomas. 46 patients were treated by radiotherapy only, 6 by surgery plus radiotherapy, 1 by surgery and 1 by chemotherapy alone. One hundred and thirty-five patients with lysis in the fifth (lowest) lumbar vertebra and 24 patients with L4 lysis were compared retrospectively with respect to radiographic variables and the occurrence of trauma before symptom onset. Hypoplasia occurred only in the L5 lysis group, whereas trauma as a symptom-precipitating factor was frequent in the L4 group. These observations suggest the possibility of different etiologies: trauma may contribute to lysis in a normal L4 vertebra, and inherited hypoplasia of the lumbosacral junction may lead to L5 lysis.

During a 20 year period 214 patients had been admitted to a teaching hospital with a diagnosis of definite or possible juvenile chronic (rheumatoid) arthritis (JCA). Eighty-seven of these patients were reviewed clinically and were classified as having had JCA. Information pertaining to 294 cases of bovine lead poisoning that occurred during the 15-year period from 1968 to 1982 was collected from the toxicology laboratory records at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Lead poisoning was seen more often in younger cattle, with 51.9% of the cases reported in animals 6-months of age or less. A surgical technique for the bone graft repair of alveolar clefts is described, and an evaluation of the conditions of 30 patients who have undergone that procedure is reported. Evaluation was made specifically for the preoperative and postoperative presence of oronasal fistula, postoperative eruption of previously unerupted teeth into the graft, soft and hard tissue periodontal status, and radiographic evidence of bone fill in the previous cleft defect resulting in alveolar segmental stabilization.

A retrospective study of the history of drug use in cancer patients, conducted in general practice and involving 972 patients, has suggested that concurrent treatment with barbiturates and benzodiazepines may involve a cancer risk. During January 1971--June 1975 we examined 195 patients with pancytopenia. The cause was bone marrow failure in 67.7% of cases (classic aplastic anaemia in 11.3%) hypersplenism in 7.7%, massive blood transfusions in 1.5%, severe infections in 9.7% (Gram-negative in 3%), and various other conditions in 7.8%.
