A rare case of metastatic prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma in a young adult: Clinical challenges and therapeutic perspectives.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate in adults is rare and often diagnosed at an advanced stage, with metastases. We report the case of a 23-year-old young adult presenting with low back pain and dysuria, whose imaging revealed a voluminous metastatic prostate mass. Biopsy confirmed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. Treatment was initiated with chemotherapy, resulting in significant regression of the tumour mass and metastases after 3 courses. Pediatric advances suggest improved survival with a multimodal approach, but its efficacy in adults requires further investigation.

Beta-catenin mutation does not seem to have an effect on the tumorigenesis of pediatric rhabdomyosarcomas.

Involvement of the Wnt signal transduction pathway has been shown in different pediatric embryonal tumors, such as hepatoblastoma, nephroblastoma, pancreatoblastoma, and medulloblastoma. There are few data available on the status of beta-catenin in rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), another pediatric embryonal tumor. The aims of this study were 1st to verify the status of the exon 3 of CTNNB1 and 2nd to assess the usefulness of beta-catenin immunostaining in a small series of 8 embryonal RMS, 3 alveolar RMS, and 1 sclerosing RMS (SRMS). Sequence analysis revealed no mutations in the exon 3 of CTNNB1 in a

Fine needle aspiration of poorly differentiated rhabdomyosarcoma presenting with quadriparesis. A case report.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of metastatic poorly differentiated rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) in lymph node specimens by fine needle aspiration presents a difficult problem since it is virtually indistinguishable from other small round cell neoplasms. CASE: Fine needle aspiration was performed under radiologic guidance on an extradural, space-occupying lesion of unknown etiology in the region of the C-6 and C-7 vertebrae in a 20-year-old male who was hospitalized with quadriparesis. Cytologic examination suggested a metastatic tumor consistent with the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. A subsequent searc

From the archives of the AFIP. Genitourinary rhabdomyosarcoma in children: radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common tumor of the lower genitourinary tract in children in the first 2 decades of life. Most cases of genitourinary rhabdomyosarcoma are of the embryonal histologic subtype and include tumors of the bladder, prostate, testes and paratesticular sites, penis, perineum, vagina, and uterus. The natural history, pattern of metastatic spread, treatment, and prognosis of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma vary with the anatomic site of the lesion. In children with rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder or prostate, presenting signs and symptoms include urinary or fecal retention, dysu

[A case of infant with giant parapharyngeal space rhabdomyosarcoma].

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a kind of skeletal muscle ifferentiation tendency of primitive mesenchymal malignant tumor. It is common in pediatric malignant pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma, and its prognosis is poor. It is easy to relapse, and its predilection sites in head and face were around the eyes, the external auditory meatus, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. We should take comprehensive treatment including surgical operation, radiotherapy and chemotherapy drug combination for embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Ureteral rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor well known to urologists. These tumors arise from the genitourinary system in 20% to 25% of cases, most commonly from the bladder, prostate, vagina, and paratesticular region. This is the first reported case of a rhabdomyosarcoma arising from the ureter. The radiographic findings and ureteroscopic appearance of this tumor suggested a benign fibroepithelial polyp; however, a ureteroscopic biopsy and subsequent nephroureterectomy revealed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus in a postmenopausal patient.

Pure rhabdomyosarcomas of the female genital tract most commonly occur in infancy or childhood as sarcoma botryoides (embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma) and involve the vagina and cervix. Such tumors rarely occur in adults. A pure rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus that arose in a postmenopausal patient is described. The pertinent literature is discussed.

[Congenital botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma of the vulva].

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent malignant soft tissue tumor in pediatric patients; however, the vulvar location and congenital appearance are exceptional. We present the case of a newborn girl with botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma of the vulva, treated with chemotherapy, conservative surgery and autologous transplant. Botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma is a variation of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma that typically grows in mucosa-lined hollow organs, from where it can spread to the body surface. The treatment of botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma in the genito-urinary area is based on polychemotherapy, and it can b

Rhabdomyosarcoma of nose and paranasal sinuses--a therapeutic challenge.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a highly malignant tumour of striated muscle and it is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in the paediatric age group. It is very uncommon in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Pinkish nasal mass and recurrent epistaxis are the most common presenting symptoms. Histologically embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common variant. The present series deals with seven such cases of different histopathological types including the embryonal, botryoid, and alveolar varieties in the paediatric age group. Multimodal treatment including limited surgery followed by radiotherapy and chem

A mediastinal somatic-type germ cell tumor with hepatic metastasis successfully treated by multiple modalities.

Rhabdomyosarcoma in the mediastinum coexisting with metastatic non-seminomatous germ cell tumor, so-called somatic-type malignancy, is a rare carcinoma and has poor survival. This study reports a case of diffuse and huge hepatic metastasis of non-seminomatous germ cell tumor associated with coexisting embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the mediastinum. A 31-year-old man presented with abdominal pain and was found to have multiple abnormal hepatic masses on abdominal computed tomography (CT). Concomitantly, an anterior mediastinal mass was found on chest CT. Chemotherapy was initiated because the he

[Two cases of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma].

Two cases of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma are reported. A 15-year-old boy was admitted in July, 1983, with a 3-week history of gradually increasing painless scrotal swelling on the right side. With the suspicion of testicular cancer, right radical orchiectomy was performed and pathological examination revealed an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the paratesticular region. Chemotherapy and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy were performed, and the latter revealed lymph node metastasis at the bifurcation of the aorta. Radiotherapy was not done because of adherent ileus. About 8 months after the orc

Fusion-Negative Rhabdomyosarcoma: Clinical Application of Targeted RNA Sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma of childhood. For stratification purposes, rhabdomyosarcoma is classified into fusion-positive RMS (alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma) and fusion-negative RMS (embryonal or spindle cell/sclerosing, FN-RMS) subtypes according to its PAX::FOXO1 fusion status. This study aims to highlight the pathologic and molecular characteristics of a cohort of FN-RMS using a targeted NGS RNA-Seq assay. METHODS: Twelve tumors were analyzed through targeted RNA-Seq using the Trusight Pancancer panel from Illumina. Molecular alterations were then

Spinal AVM, epidermal nevus, and rhabdomyosarcoma: A rare neurocutaneous syndrome?

A 26-year-old man with a history of an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising from the urachus and a large, right-sided, epidermal nevus presented with a rapidly evolving tetraparesis. Investigations confirmed an intramedullary hemorrhage of the cervical spinal cord and an extensive arteriovenous malformation (AVM). An association between his nevus, rhabdomyosarcoma, and spinal AVM is hypothesized.

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in a neonate.

A 13-day-old boy presented with left scrotal tumor and coronary hypospadias. Left radical orchiectomy was performed. Histological diagnosis was embryonal-type paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in a neonate in English-language literature. Also, the association of a testicular tumor with hypospadias has not been noted.

Rhabdomyosarcoma presenting as an anterior neck mass and possible thyroid malignancy in a seven-month-old.

A seven-month-old male presented with a one month history of an enlarging left neck mass and worsening inspiratory stridor. Upon excision of the mass, pathologic examination was consistent with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Preoperative imaging and intraoperative exploration were consistent with tumor replacing the left lobe of the thyroid. No cases of either anterior neck rhabdomyosarcoma or thyroid rhabdomyosarcoma have been explicitly described in the literature. The distinction between the two malignancies becomes important when considering prognosis and treatment protocols.

[Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in children: a scrotal emergency].

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive embryonal tumor in infancy and childhood. The tumor is intrascrotal, localized in the spermatic cord, the epididymis, or in the tunica vaginalis. Rhabdomyosarcoma represents 10% of testicular tumors of infancy. On physical examination, a painless scrotal tumefaction is observed. A surgical and pathological classification is used to group patients according to the extent of residual tumor after the initial surgical procedure: Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study classification (IRS). Multimodality therapy involving surgery, chemothera

Sarcoma arising in a residual testicular teratoma after cytoreductive chemotherapy.

A case of testicular teratoma metastasized to the retroperitoneum and after cytoreductive chemotherapy was noted to contain areas of frank sarcoma. Sarcomatous areas included embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma with a pattern of sarcoma botyroides, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, and fibrosarcoma. These areas differed markedly from areas of immature teratoma, which composed the remainder of the retroperitoneal lesion and which also characterized the primary tumor. These sarcomatous areas were characterized by numerous mitoses, marked cellular pleomorphism and diagnostic histologic, ultrastructural, and immu
