Risk Factors for Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis.

In 2015, 10.4 million people developed tuberculosis (TB) and 580,000 amongst them suffered from multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). From those 580,000 cases of MDR-TB, only 125,000 were detected and reported. A total of 111,000 people began to receive MDR-TB treatment in 2014 while 190,000 MDR-TB patients were estimated to have died, largely due to lack of access to effective treatment. The mechanism of drug resistance can be caused by genetic factors, factors related to previous treatment and other factors such as comorbidity with diabetes mellitus. Although there is some evidence which postulat

Risk factors of stillbirth in Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Yemen has the highest stillbirth rate among the Arab countries. However, the risk factors of this high rate are lacking. This study aimed to determine the maternal, newborn, and service related risk factors for stillbirths at the main maternity hospital in Sana'a city. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in the main maternity hospital in Sana'a city, Yemen. Case and controls were selected prospectively during the study period. Cases were women who delivered stillbirths after 24 weeks of gestation. Risk factors data for mothers and their neonates were collected using face-t…

Statins, haemostatic factors and thrombotic risk.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Statins reduce cholesterol synthesis and promote low-density lipoprotein clearance from circulation. Beyond their cholesterol-lowering action, statins may interfere with haemostasis. This review aims to provide an update on the impact of statin treatment on markers of haemostasis and platelet function and on thrombosis-related outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Different coagulation factors are modulated by statins, leading to inhibition of coagulation and increased fibrinolysis. Also, an impact of statins on platelet function has been documented. From a clinical perspective, sever

RESULTS: Of the 758 patients, 184 (24%) were noncompliant with screening mammography guidelines. Risk factors for late screening included younger age (P = 0.001), white race/ethnicity (P = 0.03), self-reported lack of financial means or health insurance (P = 0.005), lack of satisfaction with a previous mammogram experience (P = 0.001), inadequate mammograph …

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia: incidence and risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is the most common chronic pulmonary sequela among very low birth weight infants. The objective of this study was to estimate its incidence in our Neonatal Unit over the past 5 years and analyze associated risk factors. POPULATION AND METHODS: An observational and analytical study was conducted in a retrospective cohort, using data obtained from a prospective database of infants born at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires with a birth weight of less than 1500 grams between January 2010 and December 2014. The incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and it…

Risk factors for QTc interval prolongation.

PURPOSE: Prolongation of the QTc interval may result in Torsade de Pointes, a ventricular arrhythmia. Numerous risk factors for QTc interval prolongation have been described, including the use of certain drugs. In clinical practice, there is much debate about the management of the risks involved. In this study, we quantified the effect of these risk factors on the length of the QTc interval. METHODS: We analyzed all ECGs that were taken during routine practice between January 2013 and October 2016 in the Spaarne Gasthuis, a general teaching hospital in the Netherlands. We collected laboratory…

Chronic kidney disease - pediatric risk factors.

The knowledge about the progression of chronic kidney disease is an important issue for every pediatric nephrologist and pediatrician in order to implement appropriate measures to prevent wasting of renal function and the final consequence - end stage renal disease with the need for the dialysis and transplantation. Therefore it is important to know, treat or ameliorate the standard risk factors such as hypertension, proteinuria, anemia, hyperparathyroidism etc. In this review devoted to the World Kidney Day 2016 we will pay attention to the low birth parameters, obesity, hyperuricemia and smo…

Risk Factors of Post-Hemithyroidectomy Hypothyroidism.

INTRODUCTION: Hemithyroidectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures often associated with complications, among which hypothyroidism is the most common. However, the risk factors for post hemithyroidectomy hypothyroidism are still unclear. OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence, risk factors and time taken to develop hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy between 2004 and 2012 in two different hospitals was performed. Patients were analyzed for age, gender, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), pre…

Endocrine Risk Factors for Cognitive Impairment.

PURPOSE: In the present study, the incidence and risk factors of lens-iris diaphragm retropulsion syndrome (LIDRS) were evaluated. METHODS: Patients who underwent cataract surgery using phacoemulsification between June 2014 and December 2014 were included in the study. The preoperative ocular biometric and intraoperative surgical parameters were examined. The incidence of LIDRS and various risk factors were analyzed using an independent t-test, Pearson's chi-square test, and univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Among 124 eyes of 124 patients, 100 (80.6%) had n…

Risk factors for primary sclerosing cholangitis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a progressive cholestatic liver disease of unknown cause, but strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Potential risk factors triggering PSC have never been studied on a population level. The aim of this study was to evaluate smoking, appendectomy, family history and geographical distribution in a population-based cohort of PSC patients, as compared to IBD control patients and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: For this case-control study 343 PSC patients, 370 IBD controls and 232 HC's living in a geographically defined…

Gangrenous cholecystitis: mortality and risk factors.

As a serious complication of cholelithiasis, gangrenous cholecystitis presents greater mortality than noncomplicated cholecystitis. The aim of this study was to specify the risk factors on mortality. 107 consecutive patients who underwent surgery due to gangrenous cholecystitis between January 1997 and October 2011 were investigated retrospectively. The study included 60 (56.1%) females and 47 (43.9%) males, with a mean age of 60.7 ± 16.4 (21-88) years. Cardiovascular diseases were the most frequently accompanying medical issues (24.3%). Environmental risk factors of systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) has a complex pathogenesis. Although, there is a growing evidence that environmental factors have an impact on alterations and modulation of epigenetic determinants, resulting in SSc onset and progression. A marked correlation has thus been found between SSc onset and occupational exposure to crystalline silica and the following organic solvents: white spirit, aromatic solvents, chlorinated solvents, trichloroethylene, and ketones; the risk associated with high cumulative exposure to silica and organic solvents further appears to be strongly increased in SSc.
