Intrusive memories and rumination in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder: a phenomenological comparison.

The aim of the study was to investigate the phenomenological differences between intrusive memories and rumination in PTSD. The study population consisted of 31 patients with PTSD referred for cognitive behavioural therapy to specialist services. A semi-structured interview was used to examine the characteristics of the most prominent intrusive memory and rumination. Intrusive memories were predominantly sensory experiences of short duration, whereas rumination was predominantly a thought process of longer duration. Shame was associated more with rumination than with intrusive memories. Anxiet

The impact of rumination on aggressive thoughts, feelings, arousal, and behaviour.

Although rumination following a provocation can increase aggression, no research has examined the processes responsible for this phenomenon. With predictions derived from the General Aggression Model, three experiments explored the impact of two types of post-provocation rumination on the processes whereby rumination augments aggression. In Experiment 1, relative to distraction, self-focused rumination uniquely increased the accessibility of arousal cognition, whereas provocation-focused rumination uniquely amplified the accessibility of aggressive action cognition. In Experiment 2, provocatio

Adverse Life Experience and Psychological Distress in Adolescence: Moderating and Mediating Effects of Emotion Regulation and Rumination.

The current study tested whether emotion regulation and rumination moderated and/or mediated the relationship between accumulated adverse life experience and psychological distress in adolescence. In class, Australian high school students (n = 2637, 12-18 years, 68% female) from 41 schools completed well-validated measures of adverse life experience, emotion regulation, rumination and psychological distress, and were followed up 1 year later (n = 1973, 75% retention rate). Adjusting for age, gender and baseline psychological distress, adverse life experience predicted psychological distress 1

Trait rumination and social anxiety separately influence stress-induced rumination and hemodynamic responses.

We aimed to investigate stress-reactive rumination in response to social stress and its association with social anxiety and trait rumination. From previous investigations we know that people with a certain vulnerability to rumination show increased stress-reactive rumination. However, up to date the possible influence of social anxiety on this relationship is still unclear. Therefore, we reanalyzed the data of two of our previous studies assessing healthy low and high trait ruminators and depressed patients performing the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). We measured cortical oxygenation using

Worry and Rumination Have Distinct Associations with Nighttime versus Daytime Sleep Symptomology.

Objective: To assess whether worry and rumination differ in predicting nighttime sleep disturbance versus daytime sleep-related impairment, as assessed using short forms from the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). Participants: Adults recruited from the United States population (N = 459) via an online crowdsourcing service. Methods: Factor analysis explored whether items comprising validated measures of worry and rumination loaded onto separate factors. Hierarchical multiple regression models entered worry and rumination in a stepwise fashion to assess their rel

En Route to Depression: Self-Esteem Discrepancies and Habitual Rumination.

Dual-process models of cognitive vulnerability to depression suggest that some individuals possess discrepant implicit and explicit self-views, such as high explicit and low implicit self-esteem (fragile self-esteem) or low explicit and high implicit self-esteem (damaged self-esteem). This study investigated whether individuals with discrepant self-esteem may employ depressive rumination in an effort to reduce discrepancy-related dissonance, and whether the relationship between self-esteem discrepancy and future depressive symptoms varies as a function of rumination tendencies. Hierarchical re

Rumination Mediates the Relationship Between Negative Affect and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Female Interpersonal Trauma Survivors.

Prior research has identified both rumination and negative affect (NA) as dimensional constructs related to the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While both dimensions demonstrate significant positive relationships with symptoms of PTSD, the relationship between the two within the context of the disorder has yet to be explored. Consistent with prior research in the social anxiety literature, the present study seeks to examine a model of mediation by which rumination accounts for the significant relationship between NA and PTSD symptoms. Participants included

A preliminary study on the association between social media at night and sleep quality: The relevance of FOMO, cognitive pre-sleep arousal, and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation.

Research shows that nighttime social media is negatively associated with sleep quality and that it might be utilized to cope with aversive psychological states related to cognitive pre-sleep arousal (i.e., transdiagnostic psychopathology variables, referring to maladaptive repetitive thought), namely Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). The use of nighttime social media to cope with other aversive cognitive states (i.e., worry/rumination), their relationship with FoMO, and these variables' association with sleep are not fully understood. This study explored the relationships between nighttime social me

Is Work-Related Rumination Associated with Deficits in Executive Functioning?

Work-related rumination, that is, perseverative thinking about work during leisure time, has been associated with a range of negative health and wellbeing issues. The present paper examined the association between work-related rumination and cognitive processes centerd around the theoretical construct of executive functioning. Executive functioning is an umbrella term for high level cognitive processes such as planning, working memory, inhibition, mental flexibility; and it underlies how people manage and regulate their goal directed behavior. Three studies are reported. Study I, reports the r

Negative rumination in depression subtypes with melancholic features and anxious distress.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant cognition is one of the crucial symptoms of depression. However, whether the negative rumination participates in depression with melancholic features or anxious distress remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, we addressed this issue by compiling a questionnaire that can comprehensively measure the negative cognitive processing bias in depression. We also conducted an exhaustive analysis of its influencing factors, including the subtype of depression, age, gender, age of onset, family history of mental disorder, and education year. RESULTS: We found that depression incr

"Locked in my body, caught up in my mind": Neural signatures of body image rumination in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: Body image is a multidimensional construct crucial to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Cognitive-emotional mechanisms shaping body image, particularly AN patients' tendency to ruminate, remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated body-focused rumination using a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) Rumination Induction task. METHODS: Patients (n = 18) and healthy controls (n = 19) completed baseline assessments of rumination, body appreciation, and clinical measures. During fMRI, participants engaged in a task with self- and body

Rumination and future thinking in depression.

OBJECTIVES: Future thinking is an important domain of cognitive functioning, with reduced ability to imagine positive future events associated with hopelessness in depression and parasuicide. Rumination has been shown to exacerbate negative cognitive biases in depression, and to reduce likelihood estimations for positive future events. We examine the hypothesis that, in depressed patients, rumination would reduce the ability to imagine positive future events, whilst increasing the ability to imagine negative future events. METHOD: The ability to imagine positive and negative future events was

Personality and cognitive vulnerability in remitted recurrently depressed patients.

INTRODUCTION: Personality disorders (PDs) have been associated with a poor prognosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The aim of the current study was to examine cognitive vulnerability (i.e., dysfunctional beliefs, extremity of beliefs, cognitive reactivity, and rumination) that might contribute to this poor prognosis of patients with PD comorbidity. METHODS: 309 outpatients with remitted recurrent MDD (SCID-I; HAM-D17 ≤ 10) were included within two comparable RCTs and were assessed at baseline with the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4(+) (PDQ-4(+)), the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale

Preliminary Evaluation of a Nurse-Led Mindfulness Program With Psychoeducation on Rumination in Psychiatric Daycare Clients With Depressive Symptoms.

PURPOSE: Mindfulness-based interventions may reduce depression and rumination; however, rumination can hinder engagement and increase dropout. The current study evaluated the preliminary efficacy of a nurse-led, mindfulness-based program incorporating psychoeducation on rumination, compared to usual psychiatric daycare alone. METHOD: A prospective, multicenter, non-randomized controlled trial was conducted with adults presenting depressive symptoms in daycare settings (intervention: n = 20; control: n = 17). Primary outcomes were rumination and dropout rates. RESULTS: No significant between-

Stressful Life Events, Cognitive Biases, and Symptoms of Depression in Young Adults.

Although the link between stressful experiences and depression has been supported in numerous studies, the specific mechanisms of this relationship are still unclear. Cognitive theories of depression postulate that the influence of stress on depression may be modified by cognitive factors. The aim of the present study was to examine the interplay between negative life events, cognitive vulnerability factors, and depressive symptoms. It was hypothesized that the relationship between negative life events and symptoms of depression is shaped by rumination and cognitive biases. The study sample co

Relationship between Thought Style, Emotional Response, Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG), and Biomarkers in Cancer Patients.

(1) Introduction: Cancer diagnosis has been related to depression, anxiety, and distress, as well as to post-traumatic growth (PTG). One of the mediating variables for emotional response is thought style (rumination, cognitive avoidance, and cognitive engagement). (2) Aim: To identify the relationship between thought style and emotional responses to cancer. A secondary aim was to identify the relationship between emotional responses and inflammatory immunological biomarkers. (3) Method: A total of 115 patients with cancer were included in the study. Before initiating cancer treatment, patients…

Psychometric evaluation of the Chinese version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale.

Given the severe mental health consequences that may ensue after bereavement, it is crucial to better understand malleable cognitive factors that are associated with poorer bereavement outcomes. Grief rumination (i.e., repetitive thinking about the causes and consequences of a loss) is a malleable cognitive process that is concurrently and longitudinally associated with postloss mental health problems. To assess grief rumination, the English and Dutch Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) were recently developed. The current study examined the reliability and validity of a Chinese version of t

Mechanisms of Change in Trauma-Focused Treatment for PTSD: The Role of Rumination.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been well established in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In recent years, researchers have begun to investigate its underlying mechanisms of change. Dysfunctional cognitive content, i.e. excessively negative appraisals of the trauma or its consequences, has been shown to predict changes in PTSD symptoms over the course of treatment. However, the role of change in cognitive processes, such as trauma-related rumination, needs to be addressed. The present study investigates whether changes in rumination intensity precede and

An attentional scope model of rumination.

Rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about negative information, has been found to lead to serious maladaptive consequences, including longer and more severe episodes of major depression. In this review, we present and discuss research findings motivated by the formulation that individual differences in cognitive processes that control how information is processed influence the likelihood that thoughts will become repetitive and negative. Several studies have demonstrated that a tendency to ruminate (i.e., trait rumination) is related to difficulties updating working memory (WM) and dise

Rumination in Patients with Binge-Eating Disorder and Obesity: Associations with Eating-Disorder Psychopathology and Weight-bias Internalization.

Overvaluation of shape and weight in binge-eating disorder (BED) is associated with greater eating-disorder psychopathology and greater weight-bias internalization, which are-in turn-associated with poorer mental and physical health. Little is known, however, about the significance of other cognitive processes, such as rumination, in BED. This study examined rumination and overvaluation of shape/weight with eating-disorder psychopathology and weight-bias internalization among 237 treatment-seeking patients with BED and comorbid obesity. Hierarchical multiple regressions indicated that ruminati
