Six patients with systemic sclerosis (SS) and discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) were studied to determine whether such cases have some common clinical and laboratory findings. DLE preceded SS in all cases. Three patients had diffuse scleroderma with lung and esophagus involvements and the others limited scleroderma. Three patients had anti-topoisomerase-I and antiribonucleoprotein antibodies, 2 had either of them and the remaining anticentromere antibodies. Four had DLE located on the scalp, leading to alopecia. The other 2 had DLE on the face and extremities. No case fulfilled criteria for sy

Connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma frequently show an insidious onset. In their early stages a diagnosis of a specific CTD is hard to make, and the disorder may then be designated as "undifferentiated CTD." Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is the first symptom in many cases and may precede the disease for many years. RP, however, is a common finding in the population, especially in young females. Thus, only a minority of patients with RP will develop a CTD. For reason of prognosis and early diagnosis and to get more insight in the initial pathophysiological processes, it is important to k

Systemic sclerosis (SS) is a chronic, connective tissue disorder that can affect the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and internal organs. There are two different categories of SS, limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (LCSS) and diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (DCSS). One of the most fearful situations faced in DCSS is scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). This is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication characterized by an acute, usually symptomatic, increase in blood pressure, rise in serum creatinine levels, oliguria, and thrombotic microangiopathic changes. Pulmonary involvement in t

This study aims to analyze differences among established disease damage indicators in patients with limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (lcSSc) and diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc). Fifty patients with lcSSc and 55 patients with dcSSc were included in this study. Difference in mean disease duration between the two subgroups of patients was not statistically significant (z=-0.88, p=0.38). Patients with lcSSc and dcSSc were compared, and differences in vascular, esophageal, lung, heart, renal, and musculoskeletal involvement were statistically assessed using chi (2), Mann-Whitney, a

Scleroderma is a rare chronic multi-system disease characterised by fibrotic changes in the skin, connective tissues and internal organs. The high mortality rate associated with the condition means that clinical attention is often focussed exclusively in these contexts. This paper reports on a mixed methods study which explored patients' and practitioners' experiences of the oral and dental manifestations of scleroderma - other aspects of the condition that, patients state, also have life-changing, and limiting, effects. The overarching research questions underpinning the study were, what are

Scleroderma is an uncommon connective-tissue disease, its key feature being excessive collagen deposition resulting in fibrosis of the skin and internal organs. There are different types that can vary in severity from localized scleroderma to systemic sclerosis. Various clinical and radiographic findings can be attributed to the disease, which arise owing to the progressive nature of microvascular changes and collagen deposition. These include limited mouth opening, xerostomia, periodontal disease and cardiac and pulmonary disease. Whilst bone resorption has been reported, as far as we are awa

INTRODUCTION: Introduction and objective. Systemic sclerosis [SSc; scleroderma] is a rare, connective tissue disorder affecting all organs and systems. The primary feature of this disease is a chronic, progressive fibrosis due to excessive production of collagen and other components. There are two subsets of systemic sclerosis: 1) diffused SSc (dSSc), 2) limited SSc (lSSc) and 3) scleroderma without sclerosis (SSSC). The presented review is an attempt to summarize recent data regarding environmental and occupational factors in SSc onset.
STATE OF KNOWLEDGE: There are many factors to be taken

BACKGROUND: Connective tissue diseases (CTD), including lupus erythematosus (LE), scleroderma, sarcoidosis, and dermatomyositis, present with clinically unique cutaneous manifestations often resistant to conventional therapy. The use of lasers in the treatment of various dermatologic conditions continues to expand, presenting an opportunity for incorporation of another mechanism of action in the treatment of CTD.
OBJECTIVES: To review the use of laser therapy in the treatment of LE, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, and dermatomyositis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search was conducted to find a

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in scleroderma.
METHODS: The prevalence of length-dependent peripheral neuropathy was rigorously assessed using signs and symptoms of neuropathy derived from the Total Neuropathy Score (TNS), and standardized nerve conduction study (NCS). All subjects underwent TNS and NCS. Those who were symptomatic or had NCS evidence of peripheral neuropathy underwent laboratory evaluation for secondary causes of neuropathy.
RESULTS: A total of 130 subjects were approached for participation and 60 enrolled. Of the 60 subjects, 50 (83.3%) were

Parry-Romberg syndrome (PRS), also known as progressive facial hemiatrophy, is a rare neurocutaneous disorder characterized by progressive, unilateral atrophy of the facial tissues. It usually appears during childhood or early adulthood; however, adult-onset cases are increasingly being recognized. PRS significantly overlaps with localized scleroderma, especially the en coup de sabre (ECDS) subtype, indicating a common pathophysiological mechanism. We present a 52-year-old female patient with adult-onset PRS associated with ECDS. The patient was first diagnosed with localized scleroderma in 19

BACKGROUND: Localized scleroderma or morphea is a connective tissue disorder characterized by fibrosis of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Excessive accumulation of collagen underlies the fibrosis, yet the pathogenesis is unknown. A subset of localized scleroderma/morphea, juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS), affects children and adolescents.
OBJECTIVES: The clinical and microscopic features of JLS have not been fully characterized. The goal is to better characterize the microscopic features of JLS.
METHODS: We collected a distinctive data set of 35 children with JLS, 19 (54%) of whom pres

OBJECTIVE: Complement component 4 (C4), encoded by C4A and C4B within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 6, regulates the immune response and clears immune complexes. The variable copy number (CN) of C4 genes and retroviral human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) element influence its function. Given the relationship of C4 CN with systemic sclerosis (SSc) risk, we assessed associations with SSc clinical and serologic subtypes.
METHODS: We compared imputed C4 CNs across SSc subgroups (4,049 anticentromere positive [ACA+]; 2,200 anti-topoisomerase I [ATA+]; 577 anti-RNA pol

BACKGROUND: Peer-led support groups play an important role in supporting people with chronic diseases. They may be particularly important for people with rare diseases who typically do not have access to professional support options that focus on their disease-specific needs. Many peer-led support groups in rare diseases, however, are not sustained, and many patients do not have access to support groups. Training and education for peer support group leaders could address barriers to initiating and sustaining groups, but there is little evidence on the effectiveness of support group leader trai
