The greenhouse effect: science and policy.

Global warming from the increase in greenhouse gases has become a major scientific and political issue during the past decade. That infrared … back processes not properly accounted for in the models could produce greater or smaller increases. Sea level rises of 0.5 to 1.5 meters are typically projected for the next century, but there is a small probability of greater or even negative change. Forecasts of the distribution of variables such as soil moisture or precipitation patterns have even greater unc …

Effects of Simulated High Altitude on Blood Glucose Levels During Exercise in Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes.

CONTEXT: Current exercise guidelines for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) do not consider the impact that high altitude may have on blood glucose levels (BGL) during exercise. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acute hypoxia (simulated high altitude) on BGL and carbohydrate oxidation rates during moderate intensity exercise in individuals with T1D. METHODS: Using a counterbalanced, repeated measures study design, 7 individuals with T1D completed 2 exercise sessions; normoxia and hypoxia (~4200 m simulated altitude). Participants cycled for 60 min on an ergometer at 45% of their se

Two step male release strategy using transgenic mosquito lines to control transmission of vector-borne diseases.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of pathogens that cause devastating human diseases such as malaria and dengue. The current increase in mean global temperature and changing sea level interfere with precipitation frequency and some other climatic conditions which, in general, influence the rate of development of insects and etiologic agents causing acceleration as the temperature rises. The most common strategy employed to combat target mosquito species is the Integrated Vector Management (IVM), which comprises the use of multiple activities and various approaches to preventing t

Bioaccumulation of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene by mussels transplanted in a coastal lagoon.

The bioaccumulation of two isomeric non-alternant non-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene, was investigated in caged mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) exposed for 30 days in three sites of a coastal lagoon (Pialassa Baiona, Ravenna, Italy) contaminated by pyrogenic PAHs. The concentration of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene increased from undetectable levels in reference mussels withdrawn from the Adriatic sea to 10-30 ng g(-1) dry weight in transplanted mussels. Other contaminants bioaccumulated by caged mus

Predicting blue carbon sequestration in Sundarban coastal mangroves: A spatially explicit approach with INVEST and machine learning to advance climate resilience and UN SDG-aligned nature-based climate solutions.

Coastal blue carbon ecosystems have emerged as vital nature-based solutions for addressing climate change. This study examines the Indian Su … ance and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiatives. However, vulnerabilities associated with sea level rise (SLR), intensified storms, salinity intrusion, and human activities pose risks to resilience. ML validation yielded high predictive accuracy (97-99%), with Ensemble and linear regression (LR) models demonstrating superior performance, thereby bolste …

Repeated marine-to-freshwater fish transitions reveal paleoenvironmental modulation of adaptive radiation.

Tropical rivers in Australia and New Guinea (Sahul) provide a rare natural experiment in vertebrate evolution: Unlike other continental systems, their freshwater ichthyofaunas are composed almost entirely of marine-derived lineages rather than primary freshwater fishes. This unique biogeographic setting enables replicated tests of why some marine-to-freshwater transitions give rise to extensive adaptive radiations whereas others remain species-poor, and whether these outcomes reflect ecological opportunity or temporally structured paleoenvironmental constraints. Using a densely sampled, time-c

The global burden of climate-sensitive health impacts: a systematic review of mortality, morbidity, and economic costs.

Rising greenhouse gas emissions are intensifying heatwaves, wildfires, extreme rainfall, and sea-level rise, reshaping global health outcomes. However, the full multisystem burden remains insufficiently synthesized. This systematic review quantifies global climate-sensitive health impacts, identifies vulnerable populations, and evaluates adaptation strategies. We searched seven databases and grey literature (2000-2025), including studies linking climate exposures to health outcomes. Dual screening, risk-of-bias assessment (ROBINS-I, ROB 2), meta-analysis, meta-regression, and GRADE certainty g

Indirect experiences and storm risk perceptions: Case study - Texas, United States.

Understanding public risk perception of hurricanes and flooding is critical for shaping effective mitigation and adaptive behaviors amid escalating climate change impacts. Hurricanes have caused over one trillion dollars in damages in the U.S. since 1980, largely due to flood-related storm surges-risks heightened by sea level rise and warmer ocean temperatures, especially along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard. While direct experiences with hazards are known to influence perception, the role of indirect experiences-information from experts, political narratives, and social networks-is less …

Adverse health outcomes associated with drinking highly saline water: a systematic review.

In climate change-affected coastal areas, sea level rise, storm surges, droughts and altered rainfalls are significantly increasing salinity levels in drinking water sources. This is a major public health problem that affects many millions of people. We systematically reviewed and assessed the strength and quality of the evidence on the relationship between drinking water with high sodium levels (> 200 mgNa/l) and adverse cardiovascular, renal, and pregnancy-related health outcomes, following the PRISMA guidelines, the ROBINS-E Cochrane tool and the Navigation Guide. From five bibliographic da…

Novel luminescence diagnosis of storm deposition across intertidal environments.

Salt marshes provide valuable nature-based, low-cost defences protecting against coastal flooding and erosion. Storm sedimentation can improve the resilience of salt marshes to accelerating rates of sea-level rise, which poses a threat to salt marsh survival worldwide. It is therefore important to be able to accurately detect the frequency of storm activity in longer-term sediment records to quantify how storms contribute to salt marsh resilience. Luminescence is able to infer how long mineral grains were exposed to sunlight prior to burial (e.g., the presence or absence of sediment processing

From assembly to action: how planning language guides execution in indigenous climate adaptation.

Indigenous Peoples of the USA are already feeling the disproportionate impacts of climate change and the challenges created to their resource-based livelihoods from effects like sea level rise, species migration and extinction, and more severe and frequent storms. In response, American Indigenous communities have initiated hundreds of adaptation actions. At the center of the Indigenous climate response are efforts to identify local climate threats and prioritize adaptation actions through careful planning. To better understand their potential, 14 tribal climate adaptation plans were reviewed t…

Coastal Land Use Management Methodologies under Pressure from Climate Change and Population Growth.

Throughout history, humans living in the coastal area constantly adapt to the natural environment and create a changing environment. The rapid coastal development occurred in the mid-19th century and peaks in the mid-20th century, which was a common process in most industrialized areas. With increasing population growth and urban sprawl, many coastal lowlands are unprecedently vulnerable to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, increasing extreme storm events, and coastal flooding. Under the influence of urban revitalization and conservation, the landward shoreline movement accelerate…

Petermann Glacier on the brink: Progress, challenges and insights.

Petermann Glacier (PG), the largest marine-terminating glacier in northern Greenland based on catchment area and ice discharge, plays a key role in modulating ice export from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). With an upstream catchment connected to the GrIS interior via a deep subglacial canyon, its future stability has major implications for sea level rise. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding PG's dynamics across three critical interfaces. At the surface, reanalysis data and regional climate models diverge from observations in estimates of air temperature and surface mass b…

Short-term coastal forest responses to a hurricane-scale freshwater and saltwater flooding experiment.

Coastal upland forests are exposed to intensifying precipitation regimes and sea level rise, increasing tree mortality and transforming these coastal forests into wetland ecosystems. While the ultimate outcome of long-term exposure to these perturbations is known to be an ecosystem state change from upland forest to wetland, the resistance of forests to the first novel exposure to flooding and salinity is relatively unknown. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Manipulation to Probe the Effects of Storm Treatments (TEMPEST) experiment uses ecosystem-scale (2000 m2) experimental flooding plots to decouple…

Significant challenges to the sustainability of the California coast considering climate change.

Climate change is an existential threat to the environmental and socioeconomic sustainability of the coastal zone and impacts will be complex and widespread. Evidence from California and across the United States shows that climate change is impacting coastal communities and challenging managers with a plethora of stressors already present. Widespread action could be taken that would sustain California's coastal ecosystems and communities. In this perspective, we highlight the main threat to coastal sustainability: the compound effects of episodic events amplified with ongoing climate change, w

Ensuring Access to Opioid Treatment Program Services Among Delawareans Vulnerable to Flooding.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify potential flood-related access disruptions to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) among Delawareans. METHODS: Spatial flood risk maps and infrastructure, services, and hazard risk, transportation networks, opioid treatment programs (OTPs) for the State of Delaware were integrated to visually display the relationship between these layers. A complex network theory-based simulation model was used to assess both direct (e.g., inundation with flood water) and indirect (e.g., isolation) impacts of floods. RESULTS: Delaware is at increasing risk from f

Exploring the Use of Living Shorelines for Stabilization and Nutrient Mitigation in New England.

As salt marsh habitats face challenges due to sea level rise, storm events, and coastal development, there is an effort to use nature-based approaches such as living shorelines to enhance salt marshes and provide coastal protection. A living shoreline restoration and seasonal monitoring was conducted between July 2016 and October 2018 at an eroding salt marsh on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, Northeastern USA to assess changes in two essential ecosystem services: shoreline stabilization and nitrogen removal. Neither the living shoreline nor unaltered sites demonstrated significant sediment …
