Eicosapentaenoic acid-containing polar lipids from seaweed Susabinori (Pyropia yezoensis) alleviate hepatic steatosis in obese db/db mice.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as the most common liver disease in industrialized countries. Because hepatic steatosis is an early pathogenesis of NAFLD, the discovery of food components that could ameliorate hepatic steatosis is of interest. Susabinori (Pyropia yezoensis) is recognized as one of the most delicious edible brown algae, and we prepared lipid component of susabinori (SNL), which is rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-containing polar lipids. In this study, we tested whether feeding SNL to db/db mice protects them from developing obesity-induced hepatic steat

Effective inactivation of hepatitis A virus in the edible Ulva lactuca seaweed using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-plasma treatment.

Contamination with the hepatitis A virus (HAV) represents a significant etiological factor in acute hepatitis, occasionally progressing to liver failure. HAV transmission is primarily linked to the consumption of HAV-polluted water and food. The effectiveness of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on the infectivity reduction of a HAV strain on edible seaweed Ulva lactuca was evaluated under varying treatment durations (control, 10, 30, and 60 min), and its impact on the quality of the seaweed was also examined. To identify infectious and non-infectious virus components, HAV was exposed …

Magnesite-modified seaweed biochar-chitosan hydrogel beads for phosphate removal: adsorption mechanism, interpretable machine learning and life cycle assessment.

Although seaweed waste and magnesite tailings are abundant, their co-utilization as precursors for phosphate adsorbents remains rarely explored. Herein, a high-efficiency and regenerable magnesite-modified seaweed biochar-chitosan hydrogel bead composite (Mg@SBC/CS) was developed for phosphate removal from wastewater. Under optimized conditions, Mg@SBC/CS exhibited a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 142.77 mg g-1, markedly higher than those of the unmodified materials, while also showing tolerance to common coexisting anions and acceptable capacity retention over five adsorption-deso…

Consumption of lettuce with seaweed extract biostimulant application improved iron homeostasis in a randomized interventional trial of healthy individuals.

Minerals have key roles in the body's metabolism and homeostasis. Biostimulants application to vegetables, such as seaweed extracts derived from Ecklonia maxima (SwE), is a useful agronomic approach to improve crop yield and quality by a naturally functionalizing process. We hypothesized that SwE biostimulants would impact the minerals profile of the lettuce and the consumption of lettuce with SwE application would affect blood minerals concentration in the health population. This in turn would impact metabolic pathways essential for human homeostasis. A group 48 healthy adults, of both sexes,…

Screening and Evaluation of Potential Efflux Pump Inhibitors with a Seaweed Compound Diphenylmethane-Scaffold against Drug-Resistant Escherichia coli.

Drug-resistant efflux pumps play a crucial role in bacterial antibiotic resistance. In this study, potential efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs) with a diphenylmethane scaffold were screened and evaluated against drug-resistant Escherichia coli. Twenty-four compounds were docked against the drug-binding site of E. coli multidrug transporter AcrB, and 2,2-diphenylethanol (DPE), di-p-tolyl-methanol (DPT), and 4-(benzylphenyl) acetonitrile (BPA) were screened for their highest binding free energy. The modulation assay was further used for EPI evaluation, revealing that DPE, DPT, and BPA could reduce th

Dietary soybean or seaweed (Kappaphycus sp.) modulates taste-related gene (tas1r1 and tas1r2.2) expression in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Taste perception plays a central role in fish feeding behaviour by influencing feed recognition, intake, and nutrient sensing. As aquaculture increasingly adopts plant-based ingredients to replace fishmeal, understanding how these diets affect gustatory mechanisms is critical. This study evaluated TAS-family taste receptor genes in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed nutritionally formulated diets containing fishmeal (TFM), soybean meal (TSB), red seaweed (Kappaphycus sp., TSW), alongside a natural meal (TNM) reference. Fish were reared for 62 days under controlled conditions, after which…

Bio-Guided Fractionation and Molecular Networking Reveal Fatty Acids to Be Principal Anti-Parasitic Compounds in Nordic Seaweeds.

Widespread use of antimicrobial drugs has led to high levels of drug-resistance in pathogen populations and a need for novel sources of anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic compounds. Macroalgae (seaweed) are potentially a rich source of bioactive compounds, and several species have traditionally been used as vermifuges. Here, we investigated the anti-parasitic properties of four common cold-water Nordic seaweeds; Palmaria palmata (Rhodophyta), Laminaria digitata, Saccharina latissima and Ascophyllum nodosum (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae). Screening of organic extracts against helminths of swine (Asc…
