Microbiological quality of milk from small processing units in Senegal.

Consumption of milk and dairy products has increased significantly in Senegal in the last decade, and a large part of the local production comes from small processing units spread all over the country. We collected 85 bulk-tank milk samples from 68 smallholder dairy farms throughout the territory. Microbiological quality of milk samples was analyzed according to the official standards. Further, raw milk and pasteurized milk were screened for Mycobacterium bovis, Coxiella burnetii, and anti-Brucella abortus antibodies. Ninety-three percent of pasteurized milk samples, 92% of raw milk samples, a

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are one of the most important causes of systemic febrile illness among travelers from developed countries, but little is known about their incidence in indigenous populations, especially in West Africa. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Overall seroprevalence evaluated by immunofluorescence using six rickettsial antigens (spotted fever and typhus group) in rural populations of two villages of the Sine-Saloum region of Senegal was found to be 21.4% and 51% for spotted fever group rickettsiae for Dielmo and Ndiop villages, respectively. We investigated the role of tick-b

Antimicrobial susceptibility of select respiratory tract pathogens in Dakar, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the most common causative agents of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). The increase in resistance to current antibacterial agents highlights the need to monitor the resistance pattern of these bacterial pathogens. METHODOLOGY: In this study, we assessed the antibacterial susceptibility of these pathogens causing respiratory tract infections in Dakar, Senegal, during 2007-2008. A total of 290 bacterial isolates (75 H. influenzae, 10 M. catarrhalis, 105 S. pneumoniae, and 100 S.

[Drug resistant epilepsy in Senegal: therapeutic, clinical and socioeconomic factors].

The aim of our study was to emphasize factors which support pharmaco-resistance in Senegal. For this purpose, 23 patients with partial or generalized epilepsy were studied, after determining the plasmatic concentration of the antiepileptic drugs. The aetiologies were numerous: encephalitis, injuries, neonatal encephalitis. All patients were under traditional treatment before coming to the hospital. So antiepileptic drugs were taken a long time after the beginning of epilepsy later, they were Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin, and Valproic acid. Only seven patients had sufficient plasmati

[Congenital heart disease surgery in Senegal. Indications, evaluation and perspectives].

In Senegal, congenital heart diseases (CHD) raise important issues. Their late detection makes more complicated the non yet resolved issue of the medico-surgical care. 108 patients with congenital heart diseases have been studied prospectively from February 1992 to May 1994. Epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical data are analysed. Prognosis and treatment are discussed. Congenital heart diseases represent 1% of the outpatient cardiovascular pathology. Diagnosis of the malformation based on echocardiography shows that most of congenital heart diseases are ventricular septal defect (25%); follo

[Yellow fever in Senegal from 1976 to 1980 (author's transl)].

The isolation of a YF strain in Kedougou (eastern region) in December 1976 from Aedes gr. furcifer taylori lead to a mass vaccination campaign in Senegal. In 1977, 67 strains were isolated from different mosquitoes (essentially A. luteocephalus and A. gr. furcifer taylori). Among these strains, 3 were isolated from males and this very important phenomenon might explain the virus conservation during the dry season. In 1978, 55 strains were isolated from mosquitoes of the same species, but not from males, and five from monkeys (E. patas and C. aethiops). But no increase of morbidity or mortality

Hydrogeochemical and isotopic characterization of the upper and intermediate aquifers of the casamance (Senegal).

Groundwater serves as the primary supply source for socioeconomic activities in the Casamance region (south of Senegal), yet hydrogeochemical and water quality characteristics as well as flow patterns of groundwater at a regional scale are largely undocumented. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of hydrogeochemical processes of mineralization and to the hydraulic functioning of the Continental Terminal (CT) and Oligo-Miocene (OM) aquifer systems. Field campaigns were conducted in December 2021 (beginning of the dry season) and May 2024 (end of the dry season) to collect water s

Epidemiology of violence and suicide risk in Senegal: A nationwide survey in 2023.

Assessing violence and suicide risk at the population level is essential to inform public health policies and guide prevention efforts for mental health. In Senegal, as in much of sub-Saharan Africa, such data remain scarce. This study aims to fill that gap by estimating the prevalence of violence and suicide risk, and identifying associated factors in the Senegalese population. This nationwide, observational, cross-sectional, population-based analytical survey received ethical approval from Senegal's National Ethics Committee for Health Research. Conducted between July and August 2023, it cov

The 2024 Mpox surveillance in Senegal uncovers a large circulation of Chickenpox.

During preparedness activities in Senegal to the 2024 Mpox Public Health Emergency of International Concern, a study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Varicella-Zoster virus among patients suspected of having Mpox. Samples, including skin swabs, serum, and nasopharyngeal swabs, were collected from 103 patients who presented with Mpox-like symptoms. Molecular testing via qPCR revealed that 30.1% of patients tested positive for herpesviruses, whereas no Mpox cases were detected. Common symptoms include fever, skin rash, headache, and myalgia, which closely resemble Mpox symptoms, increas

Factors influencing acceptance of vaccination during pregnancy in The Gambia and Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination during pregnancy can protect pregnant women and their babies from infectious diseases. Tetanus vaccine, also known as tetanus toxoid, is the only vaccine given to pregnant women in The Gambia and Senegal, where it is given by antenatal care providers as part of the Expanded Programme on Immunization. A qualitative study was undertaken to explore factors influencing acceptance of vaccination during pregnancy in The Gambia and Senegal. METHODS: Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted across urban and rural settlements of The Gambia and Senegal. We

Prevalence of Trachoma in Senegal: Results of Baseline Surveys in 17 Districts.

PURPOSE: Senegal is endemic for trachoma, an infectious and potentially blinding eye disease. To complete the country's district-level baseline map of trachoma, we conducted population-based surveys in 17 health districts that were suspected-endemic but had yet to be surveyed. METHODS: We randomly selected 30 clusters (villages) per district and 30 households per village, and estimated the district-level prevalences of trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) in children aged 1-9 years, and trichiasis in persons aged ≥15 years. Data on household-level water, sanitation, and hygiene variables

Developing Research in Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Africa: The Paradigm of Senegal.

Infectious diseases represent one of the greatest potential barriers to achievement of the third Sustainable Development Goals in African countries and around the world because they continue to pose major public health challenges. The surveillance of infectious diseases has recently assumed greater importance in most African countries, both because of the emergence of infectious diseases and because strains of pathogens that cause tuberculosis, malaria, cholera, dysentery, and pneumonia have developed resistance to common and inexpensive antimicrobial drugs. However, data on the pathogen-speci
