How the Gender Dimension of One Health Helps Combat Outbreaks of Emerging and Reemerging Zoonotic Diseases: Case Studies.

When outbreaks of emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases are discussed, little attention is paid to differential gender impacts, or to gender involvement and roles in different settings during the outbreak. Gender roles shape how individuals' interactions with animals, wildlife, other people and the environment, which influences exposure to zoonotic pathogens. For example, in some rural communities, men may face risks of exposure to emerging pathogens during hunting whilst women who primarily take care of domestic animals may face prolonged exposure to other zoonotic diseases. In some setti

Cross-sectional analysis of the seropositivity and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection among veterinarians, in relation to their public professional activities.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic pathogen that can infect most warm-blooded animals and humans. Although numerous epidemiological studies of T. gondii have been published, very limited data exist on the prevalence of T. gondii infection among veterinarians. In this study, a survey was used to analyze the seropositivity of and risk factors for T. gondii infection among public veterinarians (PV) and veterinarians in veterinary service laboratories (VVSL). Blood samples were collected from individuals in both groups and examined by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). A questionnaire survey on work activitie

Clinical Urgency of After-Hours Presentations of Dogs and Cats to a Private Small-Animal Practice in Germany: A Retrospective Study of 4579 Visits.

This descriptive study aimed to assess the urgency of after-hours emergency visits in a small-animal practice using a structured triage system, and to characterize the associated presenting conditions and treatments. Medical records of 3189 dog and 1390 cat visits presented between 1 January and 31 December 2021 to an advanced small-animal practice were retrospectively reviewed. Retrieved data included temporal characteristics of presentation, species, signalment, clinical diagnosis, diagnostics, and treatments. Visits were retrospectively categorized using a triage approach based on the five-

Assessing genetic parameters for first parity reproductive traits for early selection in Saanen × Beetal goats of India.

The present study aimed to evaluate the genetic parameters of first parity reproductive traits. Information on 762 reproductive records on Saanen × Beetal (S × B) goats reared for approximately five decades was collected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana (1973-2020). For genetic analysis, single-trait and multiple-trait animal models were used. Gibbs sampler for animal model (GSAM) approach was used for estimating (co)variance components of reproductive traits. Six different single-trait animal models (with or without maternal and environmental effects) were used and

[An outbreak of Q fever in The Netherlands--possible link to goats].

In 2007, 73 cases of Q fever were identified through reports and retrospective analyses; the affected region extended from Tilburg in the southwest to Arnhem in the northeast. The infections arose in late spring, particularly in May and June. Several spontaneous abortions due to Q fever occurred on 4 dairy goat farms in the same region. The national incidence of spontaneous abortion due to Q fever was 6 cases in 2006 and 7 in 2007. Climatically, this southern region was extraordinarily dry during April 2007. All pregnant women from a small region with the highest incidence in northeast North B

Measurement of microclimates in a warming world: problems and solutions.

As the world warms, it will be tempting to relate the biological responses of terrestrial animals to air temperature. But air temperature typically plays a lesser role in the heat exchange of those animals than does radiant heat. Under radiant load, animals can gain heat even when body surface temperature exceeds air temperature. However, animals can buffer the impacts of radiant heat exposure: burrows and other refuges may block solar radiant heat fully, but trees and agricultural shelters provide only partial relief. For animals that can do so effectively, evaporative cooling will be used to

Clinical implications and treatment options of tungiasis in domestic animals.

Tunga penetrans, Tunga trimamillata and Tunga hexalobulata are the three species of sand fleas which cause tungiasis in domestic animals. Tunga penetrans and T. trimamillata are zoonotic in the tropical and sub-tropical endemic communities of Latin America and Africa. Tungiasis in animals frequently occurs alongside human tungiasis. Currently, most of the attention given to tungiasis is focusing on the human disease, and animal tungiasis is extremely neglected despite its public health and animal health significance. This review highlights recent findings concerning the clinical implications a

Understanding farmers' preferences for artificial insemination services provided through dairy hubs.

Africa has a shortage of animal products but increasing demand because of population growth, urbanisation and changing consumer patterns. Attempts to boost livestock production through the use of breeding technologies such as artificial insemination (AI) have been failing in many countries because costs have escalated and success rates have been relatively low. One example is Kenya, a country with a relatively large number of cows and a dairy industry model relevant to neighbouring countries. There, an innovative dairy marketing approach (farmer-owned collective marketing systems called dairy

Effect of short-term treatment with bovine somatotropin at estrus on conception rate and luteal function of repeat-breeding dairy cows.

We studied the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) at the time of estrus on progesterone concentrations and conception rates of repeat-breeding Holstein cows. We used repeat-breeding cows of varied parity (n = 510). All the animals were clinically healthy and had had at least three unsuccessful services before entering the study. After detection of estrus, the cows were randomly assigned to either a treated (n = 201) or a control (n = 309) group. The animals in the treated group were given rbST (500 mg s.c.) at the time of estrus and again 10 d later. Artificial insemination was p

Perspectives in milk production in India.

India is the largest milk producer contributing 25 % to the global production. From a mere 17 million tons (MTs) in 1951, milk production increased to an inconceivable 230 MTs in 2023. Nondescript cows and buffaloes were the main milk animals. Since 1965, nationwide programs for cross breeding native cattle with exotic milk breeds such as Jersey, Holstein Friesian (HF) and Brown Swiss (BS) and upgradation of buffalo breeds along with disease eradication, feed and fodder development and provision of veterinary and extension services were implemented. Now 75 % of the milk in India is produced by

Diversity and Distribution of Fungal Infections in Rwanda: High Risk and Gaps in Knowledge, Policy, and Interventions.

Fungal infections (FIs) are spreading globally, raising a significant public health concern. However, its documentation remains sparse in Africa, particularly in Rwanda. This report provides a comprehensive review of FIs in Rwanda based on a systematic review of reports published between 1972 and 2022. The findings reveal a rich diversity of fungal pathogens, including Blastomyces, Candida, Cryptococcus, Histoplasma, Microsporum, Pneumocystis, Rhinosporidium, and Trichophyton caused human infections. Candida infections predominantly affect the vagina mucosa, while Histoplasma duboisi was linke

"Dying alone and being eaten": dog scavenging on the remains of an elderly animal hoarder-a case report.

Animal hoarding and human consumption by dogs have been important but often understudied aspects of the human-animal bond that can be addressed within a One Health framework. No scientific report has focused on dog scavenging on animal hoarders to date, despite isolated reports of dog scavenging on human remains, mostly due to starvation. The phenomenon has been approached as a confounding factor for human forensics. In 2014, the Animal Protection Department of Curitiba City was called to rescue and handle ten small dogs which had scavenged for a week on the human remains of their elderly owne

[Antivenom therapy after a black mamba snakebite].

A 24-year-old man was bitten on his right forefinger by his black mamba while he was feeding the animal. The primary symptoms caused by a full injection of the snake's venom therefore presented a life-threating situation. Due to pre-hospital troubleshooting of the emergency medical service and the timely administration of the antivenom further potentially harmful effects caused by the snakes venom were avoided.

Our shared burden of diseases.

At the end of the year that saw Ebola virus disease dominate the news, experts warn that other zoonoses also pose serious threats. To prepare for disease outbreaks and avoid global epidemics, health services and researchers may have to adopt a broader perspective, known as the 'One Health' paradigm, which links the health of people, domestic and wild animals, and the ecosystems they inhabit. Michael Gross reports.

RETRACTED: An Overview of Antimicrobial Stewardship Optimization: The Use of Antibiotics in Humans and Animals to Prevent Resistance.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Antimicrobials are a type of agent widely used to prevent various microbial infections in humans and animals. Antimicrobial resistance is a major cause of clinical antimicrobial therapy failure, and it has become a major public health concern around the world. Increasing the development of multiple antimicrobials has become available for humans and animals with no appropriate guidance. As a result, inappropriate use of antimicrobials has significantly produced antimicrobial resistance. However, an increasing number of infections such as sepsis are untreatable due to this antimicrobial resistan

Rabies, readiness, and role 1 medical care.

As medics and doctors prepare for deployment to a combat zone, there are countless specified and implied tasks needed to prepare the medical support of an Infantry unit in theater. Appropriately, units spend the lion share of their efforts in trauma training and medical readiness (vaccinations, medication prescriptions, eye glasses, etc.) while ensuring that the sets, kits, and outfits are all fully stocked with the required items needed to execute the mission. Unfortunately, this training and preparation included little on the major challenges units currently face from rabies. With the unfort

Breaking the under-reporting cycle for zoonotic diseases in low-income and middle-income countries through national-level integration of community-based surveillance and response: insights from Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mali.

Zoonotic diseases remain a major threat to both human and animal populations, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. A key challenge in managing these diseases is insufficient coordination between human and animal health sectors and the communities they serve, which often results in delayed outbreak detection and minimal disease control. Community health workers and community animal health workers can help fill this gap by identifying suspected cases early and facilitating communication between communities and health services. However, challenges, such as a scarcity of resources

Collaboration in Animal-Assisted Activities and Animal-Assisted Therapy.

Animal Assisted Intervention is a valuable tool in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Conducting goal-directed, therapeutic Animal-Assisted Interventions requires certification, training and collaboration. It is important that Animal Assisted Therapy teams comprised of specially trained dogs and handlers are co-certified to ensure the safety of patients, therapeutic interactions, and beneficial outcomes aligned with rehab goals. Some examples of speech therapy goals and outcomes in AAT are included below. It is preferred to conduct co-treatment sessions with AAT therapists and a second c

Selected Livestock-Associated Zoonoses as a Growing Challenge for Public Health.

The aim of this paper is to review the most significant livestock-associated zoonoses. Human and animal health are intimately connected. This idea has been known for more than a century but now it has gained special importance because of the increasing threat from zoonoses. Zoonosis is defined as any infection naturally transmissible from vertebrate animals to humans. As the frequency and prevalence of zoonotic diseases increase worldwide, they become a real threat to public health. In addition, many of the newly discovered diseases have a zoonotic origin. Due to globalization and urbanization
