Directional discordance between a deployed commercial 12-lead ECG interpretation algorithm and expert cardiologists, and its distribution by sex and age: a post-deployment audit using PTB-XL.

Automated 12-lead ECG algorithms are widely used, yet their disagreement with cardiologists across patient subgroups is rarely audited on public data. We characterized the directional discordance of the GE Marquette 12SL algorithm against expert labels.
Methods: In this retrospective audit of 14,885 ECGs from 13,480 patients (PTB-XL/PTB-XL+ dataset), we compared 12SL (v23) statements with standardized cardiologist labels for myocardial infarction (MI), conduction disturbance (CD), and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). We calculated observed agreement and paired marginal differences with

Willingness to use and distribute HIV self-test kits to clients and partners: A qualitative analysis of female sex workers' collective opinion and attitude in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal.

BACKGROUND: In West Africa, female sex workers are at increased risk of HIV acquisition and transmission. HIV self-testing could be an effective tool to improve access to and frequency of HIV testing to female sex workers, their clients and partners. This article explores their perceptions regarding HIV self-testing use and the redistribution of HIV self-testing kits to their partners and clients. METHODS: Embedded within ATLAS, a qualitative study was conducted in Côte-d'Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal in 2020. Nine focus group discussions were conducted. A thematic analysis was performed. RESULT

Willingness to distribute free rapid home HIV test kits and to test with social or sexual network associates among men who have sex with men in the United States.

Peer-driven HIV prevention strategies can be effective in identifying high-risk persons with undiagnosed infections. Besides individual self-testing, other potential uses of rapid home HIV test kits include distributing them, and testing with others within one's social or sexual networks. We sought to identify factors associated with the willingness to engage in these alternative activities among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. From May to October 2014, we surveyed 828 HIV-negative or unknown status MSM about multiple aspects of rapid home HIV testing. A greater proportio

Correlates of body fat distribution. Variation across categories of race, sex, and body mass in the atherosclerosis risk in communities study. The Atherosclerosis Risk in communities (ARIC) Study Investigators.

Though central adiposity is a strong, independent risk factor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, relatively little is known about its determinants. To characterize the association of central adiposity with several of its possible determinants, while describing variability in these associations across sex, race, and level of body mass index, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 15,800 white and African-American men and women ages 45 to 64 years participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities baseline survey, 1987 to 1989. After adjustment for other possible determinants, A

Sex- and Age-Specific Distribution of Skeletal Muscle Mass and Paraspinal Muscle Indices and Their Association With Spinal Sagittal Alignment: The Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis Against Disability (ROAD) Study.

Background Sagittal spinal malalignment is a significant contributor to reduced quality of life in older adults, associated with chronic back pain, impaired mobility, and psychosocial distress. While age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass (sarcopenia) is known to influence posture, the sex-specific progression of muscle degeneration and its association with sagittal balance remain unclear. Objective The objective of this study is to investigate the age- and sex-specific changes in skeletal and paraspinal muscle indices and their associations with sagittal spinal alignment in a large populati

Anatomic distribution of cancers and colorectal adenomas according to age and sex and relationship between proximal and distal neoplasms in an i-FOBT-positive average-risk Italian screening cohort.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Subsite-specific incidence rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) and adenomas may vary considerably by race, sex and age as well as due to different screening strategies. We assessed variations in the anatomical distribution of adenomas according to age and sex in an average-risk screening cohort testing positive at immunological faecal occult blood test (i-FOBT) in northern Italy. METHODS: Data from 2,281 consecutive asymptomatic i-FOBT-positive subjects ageing 50-70 years undergone colonoscopy were reviewed. Size, number, macroscopic and histological features of all adenomas

Evaluating peer navigation in promoting digital secondary distribution of HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a two-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In China, the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) is still rising, with a large proportion of people never tested for HIV in this group. HIV self-testing (HIVST) offers a user-empowered approach in expanding testing coverage. Peer navigation, recognized for its effectiveness in supporting MSM in HIV care, is proposed here as a potential enhancement to HIVST. This study aims to evaluate peer navigation in promoting digital secondary distribution of HIVST among MSM in China. METHODS: We plan to recruit 400 participants (indexes) identified as key nodes in the networ

Distribution of Human Papillomavirus Genotype in Anal Condyloma Acuminatum Among Japanese Men: The Higher Prevalence of High Risk Human Papillomavirus in Men Who Have Sex with Men with HIV Infection.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is known to cause anal condyloma acuminatum (CA) and squamous cell carcinoma. Men who have sex with men (MSM) with HIV infection are frequently co-infected with HPV, especially high risk HPV (HR-HPV) that causes anal squamous cell carcinoma. However, there are few reports of HPV genotype studies in anal lesion of Japanese men. We tried to estimate the distribution of HPV genotypes in anal CA tissue specimens from the Japanese men to elucidate the risk of anal cancer. A total of 62 patients who had anal CA surgically excised were enrolled. They included 27 H

Red blood cell distribution width and blood transfusions are associated with 2-year mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation in males but not in females: sex-related differences in hematological predictors.

Preoperative anemia, transfusions, and simple hematological parameters like red blood cell distribution width (RDW) have been associated with worse outcomes in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), with some heterogeneity of results. Hemoglobin (Hb) levels are physiologically different in males and females, and sex differences are increasingly recognized to play an important role in the prognosis of many cardiovascular diseases, including aortic valve stenosis. We aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of preoperative anemia, RDW, and periprocedural transfusions in

Human 3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isoforms (AKR1C1-AKR1C4) of the aldo-keto reductase superfamily: functional plasticity and tissue distribution reveals roles in the inactivation and formation of male and female sex hormones.

The kinetic parameters, steroid substrate specificity and identities of reaction products were determined for four homogeneous recombinant human 3alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3alpha-HSD) isoforms of the aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily. The enzymes correspond to type 1 3alpha-HSD (AKR1C4), type 2 3alpha(17beta)-HSD (AKR1C3), type 3 3alpha-HSD (AKR1C2) and 20alpha(3alpha)-HSD (AKR1C1), and share at least 84% amino acid sequence identity. All enzymes acted as NAD(P)(H)-dependent 3-, 17- and 20-ketosteroid reductases and as 3alpha-, 17beta- and 20alpha-hydroxysteroid oxidases. The fun

Optimizing machine learning-based identification of sexual health influencers for HIV self-testing distribution among men who have sex with men in China: a secondary analysis of a quasi-experimental trial.

BACKGROUND: Secondary distribution of HIV self-testing can expand testing among men who have sex with men. A parent quasi-experimental trial found that sexual health influencers (SHIs) identified by a machine-learning model achieved greater peer uptake than those identified by an empirical scale, but the factors driving distribution effectiveness remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the parent trial (ChiCTR2000039632) in five provinces in southern China. Participants were randomized to either the empirical scale or machine-learning identification arm, and SHIs were th

Tissue distribution of ultraviolet absorbents and industrial antioxidants in Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) and ringed seals (Pusa hispida) from the Canadian Arctic: Influence of sex, body size, and spatial variation.

UV absorbents and industrial antioxidants are contaminants of emerging concern. However, their tissue distribution in marine mammals remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the tissue distribution of benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs), organic UV filters (UVFs), 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (26DTBP), and aromatic secondary amines (Ar-SAs) in Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) (blubber, muscle, and liver) and ringed seal (Pusa hispida) (blubber and liver) tissues collected around several communities in the Canadian Arctic. In both species, blubber accumulated higher level

Evaluation of the anatomical site distribution of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in men who have sex with men and in high-risk women by routine testing: cross-sectional study revealing missed opportunities for treatment strategies.

OBJECTIVES: Current strategies for controlling non-urogenital chlamydia and gonorrhoea are not uniform. It is assumed that present anorectal/oropharyngeal infections are coincidentally treated with urogenital infections. However, it is not clear whether this control strategy is effective. To inform current debate, we evaluated the anatomical site distribution of chlamydia and gonorrhoea by routine testing in men who have sex with men (hereafter men) and in high-risk women (prostitutes and swingers, hereafter women). METHODS: Between January 2010 and November 2012, all men (n=2436) and women (

Distribution of fasting serum insulin measured by enzyme immunoassay in an unselected population of 4,032 individuals. Reference values according to age and sex. D.E.S.I.R. Study Group. Données Epidémiologiques sur le Syndrome d'Insulino-Résistance.

As hyperinsulinaemia has been shown to be a risk factor for non-insulin-dependent diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, the measurement of serum insulin levels may provide an additional early screening test for these diseases. Biological assaying of insulin is now facilitated by the IMx-Abbott kit, an enzyme immunoassay which does not cross-react with proinsulin and thus provides more specific insulin determination than conventional methods. Fasting insulin concentrations were determined in a population of 4,032 men and women 30 to 64 years of age, all volunteers for a medical che

Sex-specific hemostatic responses and alterations of Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and D-dimer in mild COVID-19, Malaria, and co-infection in a tropical setting: A case-control study in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

In malaria-endemic tropical regions, overlapping coagulopathy in COVID-19 and malaria poses management challenges with potential sex differences. This STROBE-compliant case-control study evaluated sex-specific variations in platelet indices and assessed alterations of platelet distribution width (PDW) and D-dimer in mild cases. We studied 220 participants, 55 per group: healthy controls, malaria-positive, COVID-19-positive, and COVID-19 plus malaria co-infected, aged 20-65 years, balanced by sex (22 females and 33 males per group), conducted in Port Harcourt, Nigeria between November 2021 and

A Machine Learning Model for Identifying Sexual Health Influencers to Promote the Secondary Distribution of HIV Self-Testing Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in China: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual health influencers (SHIs) are individuals actively sharing sexual health information with their peers, and they play an important role in promoting HIV care services, including the secondary distribution of HIV self-testing (SD-HIVST). Previous studies used a 6-item empirical leadership scale to identify SHIs. However, this approach may be biased as it does not consider individuals' social networks. OBJECTIVE: This study used a quasi-experimental study design to evaluate how well a newly developed machine learning (ML) model identifies SHIs in promoting SD-HIVST compared to

Monetary incentives and peer referral in promoting digital network-based secondary distribution of HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a three-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing is a crucial strategy for HIV prevention. HIV testing rates remain low among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. Digital network-based secondary distribution is considered as an effective model to enhance HIV self-testing (HIVST) among key populations. Digital platforms provide opportunities for testers to apply for HIVST kits by themselves, and secondary distribution allows them to apply for multiple kits to deliver to their sexual partners or members within their social network. We describe a three-arm randomized controlled trial t

Promoting male partner HIV testing and safer sexual decision making through secondary distribution of self-tests by HIV-negative female sex workers and women receiving antenatal and post-partum care in Kenya: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Increased uptake of HIV testing by men in sub-Saharan Africa is essential for the success of combination prevention. Self-testing is an emerging approach with high acceptability, but little evidence exists on the best strategies for test distribution. We assessed an approach of providing multiple self-tests to women at high risk of HIV acquisition to promote partner HIV testing and to facilitate safer sexual decision making. METHODS: In this cohort study, HIV-negative women aged 18-39 years were recruited at two sites in Kisumu, Kenya: a health facility with antenatal and post-par
