Shoulder joint: arthrographic CT and long-term follow-up, with surgical correlation.

One hundred two computed tomographic (CT) arthrograms of the shoulder were retrospectively reviewed and compared with conventional double-contrast arthrograms from 101 patients (24 females and 77 males aged 9-70 years). One- to 4-year follow-up was obtained in 84 patients, 40 of whom underwent open-shoulder surgery or arthroscopy. Morphology of the normal portions of each labrum was categorized according to length, width, and tip shape. Correlation between morphology and age was weak, but abnormal labra were more common in younger patients. Conventional radiography was more accurate for detect

The use of OpenSim software for biomechanical modeling of the shoulder joint: a scoping review.

Shoulder musculoskeletal models play a crucial role in biomechanical research, providing insights into joint mechanics, muscle function, movement analysis, and potential interventions. This literature review examines the use of upper limb computational models in OpenSim, focusing on their application in shoulder joint studies. It summarizes advancements in modeling and evaluates clinical applicability, considering sample size, experimental data, and OpenSim-based analyses. The review included studies from PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Web of Science, Scopus, and the OpenSim websit…

Is there a relation between loss of shoulder external rotation and sternoclavicular joint disorders?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Scapulothoracic movements are essential in shoulder kinematics and can partially compensate  stiffness and loss of motion of glenohumeral joint. The scapulothoracic movement is strictly dependent on the translation and rotation of the clavicle at the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ), this being the only true joint between the axial and the upper appendicular skeleton.  Aim of the study is to define a possible correlation between loss of shoulder external rotation following surgery for anterior shoulder instability and long-term sternoclavicular joint disorders. METHODS: A grou

Shoulder Joint Stiffness in a Functional Posture at Various Levels of Muscle Activation.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present a method to quantify the mechanics of the shoulder joint in a functional posture, in two degrees of freedom: internal/external rotation and horizontal abduction/adduction. METHODS: We performed experiments on 15 healthy participants using a custom perturbation robot. Perturbations were applied in internal/external rotation and horizontal abduction/adduction, whilst participants applied varying levels of joint torque. System identification techniques were used to quantify the mechanical properties of the shoulder joint at various levels of muscle contractio…

Anatomical study of the articular branch of the lateral pectoral nerve to the shoulder joint.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document the distribution of the articular branch of the lateral pectoral nerve (LPN) to the shoul … to the shoulder, as well as the muscular and cutaneous branches of the LPN, covers a portion of the shoulder joint with suprascapular and axillary nerves. Surgeons might consider a peripheral block of the suprascapular, axillary, and LPNs to provide maximum block coverage after shoulder joint surgery.

Development of an item list to assess the forgotten joint concept in shoulder patients.

BACKGROUND: To generate an item list for the assessment of joint awareness in shoulder patients and to collect patient feedback on the comprehensibility of the items and the forgotten joint concept. METHODS: Item content was generated on the basis of literature search and expert ratings following a stepwise refinement procedure, including final evaluation by an international expert board (n = 12) including members with various professional backgrounds. Items were translated from English to German and evaluated in 30 German-speaking shoulder patients in Switzerland and 30 shoulder patients in

Surgical and methodologic aspects of proximal humeral osteotomy for stabilization of the shoulder joint.

It has previously been shown that a small retroversion angle might predispose to recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation, and in patients with remaining instability after soft-tissue repair the retroversion angle is often reduced. In these patients a rotation osteotomy of the proximal humerus to correct the anatomy in order to stabilize the joint can be advocated. The surgical technique for subcapital rotational osteotomy of the humerus is presented in this report. An isolated humerus has been osteotomized and radiographically examined in various positions. These findings, supplemented with ma

Detection of acromioclavicular joint pathology in asymptomatic shoulders with magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) arthritis with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation in asymptomatic patients. Fifty shoulders in 42 patients were evaluated with the use of standard MRI techniques. There were 18 men and 24 women with an average age of 35 years (range, 19 to 72). ACJ arthritic changes were graded on a scale from 1 to 4 (none, mild, moderate, and severe), based on the amount of subacromial fat effacement, joint space narrowing, irregularity, capsular distension, and osteophyte formation. Forty-one (82%) of 50 shoul

Comparison of supraspinatus tendon and glenohumeral joint axes in MR imaging of the shoulder.

OBJECTIVE: In magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the shoulder, oblique coronal images are used for evaluating the supraspinatus tendon (SST) of patients with suspected rotator cuff tear or impingement. This study aimed to compare orientation of the SST long axis with planes perpendicular to the glenohumeral joint (GHJ). DESIGN AND PATIENTS: The axial scans of 100 consecutive patients referred for MR imaging or MR arthrography of the shoulder were reviewed. Using the electronic cursors of a computer workstation, the angle of the SST long axis was measured and compared with the angle obtained t

[Radiologic and sonographic screening study of shoulder joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis].

In the course of a prospective study at our department the shoulder joints of 50 RA-patients were examined. Two criteria have been applied: only righthanded patients have been examined in order to ascertain any prevalence of changes in the dominant extremity, and only patients who were primarily admitted to our department because of complaints other than those of the shoulder. Examination consisted of anamnesis, clinical tests, radiography and sonography. Reports in the literature concerning involvement of 60%. This percentage was confirmed in our clinical and radiological examinations. If, ho…

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of tendon and ligament injuries in anterior dislocations of the shoulder joint].

The usefulness of ultrasonography in diagnosis of frequently occurring traumatic injuries of the ligament-tendon apparatus of the shoulder has been evaluated and compared with intra-operative nd contrast roentgenography examinations. An analysis of 102 cases, including 85 fresh anterior dislocation, 17 habitual anterior dislocation, has been made. 306 ultrasonographic examinations have been performed. A frequent coexistence of injuries of the tendon of the long head of the biceps muscle with an injury of the rotators cuff, mainly the supraspinous muscle, has been pointed out. The purposefulnes

[Effect of muscular dysfunction on the development of shoulder joint in children with Erb's paralysis].

In order to evaluate the disturbances of development of the shoulder joint in children with Erb's paralysis the authors conducted an X-ray examination of the shoulder girdle and the shoulder in the anterior-posterior projection. The assessment of the functional state of the muscles of the shoulder girdle was made with the aid of clinical EMG. It was established that there was a retardation of growth and ossification of the radial head of the humerus on the affected side, a decrease in the longitudinal and cross-sectional sizes of the humerus, a retardation in the development of the joint scopu…
