Transformation of receptive field properties from lateral geniculate nucleus to superficial V1 in the tree shrew.

Tree shrew primary visual cortex (V1) exhibits a pronounced laminar segregation of inputs from different classes of relay neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). We examined how several receptive field (RF) properties were transformed from LGN to V1 layer 4 to V1 layer 2/3. The progression of RF properties across these stages differed markedly from that found in the cat. V1 layer 4 cells are largely similar to the the LGN cells that provide their input, being dominated by a single sign (ON or OFF) and being strongly modulated by sinusoidal gratings. Some layer 4 neurons, notably those

Emetic action of the prostanoid TP receptor agonist, U46619, in Suncus murinus (house musk shrew).

The emetic action of the prostanoid TP receptor agonist, 11alpha,9alpha-epoxymethano-15S-hydroxyprosta-5Z,13E-dienoic acid (U46619; 300 microg/kg, i.p.), was investigated in Suncus murinus. The emetic response was reduced by 76% following bilateral abdominal vagotomy (P<0.001) and by reserpine (5 mg/kg, i.p., 24 h pretreatment; P<0.05) but U46619 administered i.c.v. (30-300 ng) was not emetic, suggesting a peripheral mechanism involving monoamines. However, fenfluramine (5 mg/kg, repeated treatment) and para-chlorophenylalanine (100-400 mg/kg) and ondansetron (0.3-3 mg/kg) were inactive (P>0.0

An arterially perfused decerebrate preparation of Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) for the study of emesis and swallowing.

Arterially perfused, decerebrate preparations of the insectivore, Suncus murinus were made to determine whether the emetic reflex could be activated in such a preparation using a range of stimuli shown to be emetic in conscious or anaesthetised Suncus. Efferent phrenic and vagus nerve activities and electromyograms (EMGs) from the temporalis, abdominal oesophagus and trapezius muscles were recorded, as well as longitudinal shortening of the oesophagus and dorso-ventral movements of the thorax. The preparations swallowed spontaneously every 0.6 to 6.5 min. The duration of a swallow was 3.1 +/-

The emetic and anti-emetic effects of the capsaicin analogue resiniferatoxin in Suncus murinus, the house musk shrew.

1. In SUNCUS: murinus the ultrapotent capsaicin analogue resiniferatoxin (RTX) induced an emetic response in the dose range 1 - 1000 microg kg(-1), s.c. The latency was inversely related to dose and ranged from 41.2+/-4.4 min. (1 microg kg(-1), s.c.) to 2.7+/-0.6 min. (1000 microg kg(-1), s.c.). 2. The emetic response to RTX (10 or 100 microg kg(-1), s.c.) was blocked or markedly reduced by pre-treatment with RTX (100 microg kg(-1), s.c.), 8-OH-DPAT (100 microg kg(-1), s.c.), morphine (2 mg kg(-1), s.c.), neonatal capsaicin (100 mg kg(-1), s.c.) and the NK(1) receptor antagonist CP-99,994 (10

Serotonergic neurons are present and innervate blood vessels in the olfactory bulb of the laboratory shrew, Suncus murinus.

The distribution and characteristics of serotonin-immunoreactivity in the olfactory bulb of the laboratory shrew (Suncus murinus, insectivore) was studied immunohistochemically. Serotonergic neurons were found only in the subependymal layer of the main olfactory bulb. These neurons were 8-12 microm in size and bipolar in shape. These serotonergic neurons had smooth nerve fibers which innervate blood vessels located mainly in the subependymal layer of the main olfactory bulb. On the other hand, other serotonergic nerve fibers with varicosities, which must be extrinsic, were detected in most olf

Brainstem topology of the vagal motoneurons projecting to the esophagus and stomach in the house musk shrew, Suncus murinus.

The central origin of vagal efferents innervating the esophagus and stomach in the house musk shrew, Suncus murinus, was studied using the retrograde tracing technique. The animals were perfused with fixative 48-72 h after HRP injection and sections were processed by HRP histochemistry. HRP application into the gastroesophagus resulted in bilateral labelling of neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMX) and ambiguous nucleus (AN). Labelled neurons in the DMX were observed from all regions except from the cervical esophagus, while ones in the AN were seen from the esophagus an

Retinal projections in the house musk shrew, Suncus murinus, as determined by anterograde transport of WGA-HRP.

Retinal projections in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) were determined by the anterograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP). Unilateral injection of WGA-HRP into the vitreous body resulted in the terminal labeling of the optic projections in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCH), the ventral (CGLv) and dorsal (CGLd) lateral geniculate nuclei, the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL), the pretectum, the superficial layers of the superior colliculus (CS), and the dorsal terminal nucleus (DTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS). Studies of calcitonin cells and parathyroid gland of house shrew, Suncus murinus in response to experimental hypercalcemia.

1. Hypercalcemia was induced in S. murinus by alternate day intramuscular injections of vitamin D (25 000 IU) and by providing them 1% CaCl2 solution (prepared in tap water) for drinking. 2. After such a treatment the serum calcium values recorded a rise as compared to those of the control specimens. 3. The histological picture of the thyroid of the treated specimens reveals increased number of calcitonin cells. This observation is supported by the occurrence of mitotic figures among them. 4. Perpetual calcium challenge results in degranulation of the secretory material (calcitonin) among thes

Functional significance of the cells in the pars anterior of the pituitary gland of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus L.).

Seven morphologically and tinctorially distinct types of cells (types 1--7) have been distinguished in the pars anterior of the pituitary gland of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus L.). On the basis of their responses to various experimental stimuli, these cell types were correlated with the secretion of various trophic hormones. Type 1 cells exhibited conspicuous changes after thyroidectomy or inactivation of the thyroid gland and hence appeared to be the source of TSH. Types 2 and 3 cells responded to gonadectomy and administration of androgens, which suggests that they were associated with gon

Cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis in a prosimian primate (Galago) and the tree shrew (Tupaia).

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

Molecular detection and genetic variability of Cryptosporidium spp. in wild Asian house shrews (Suncus murinus) from southern Zhejiang province, China.

Shrews play a crucial role as repositories for diverse pathogens linked to zoonotic infectious diseases. However, the genetic information regarding Cryptosporidium in Chinese shrews remains unexplored. The objectives of this study were twofold: to determine the occurrence rate of Cryptosporidium spp. in wild shrews residing in the southern part of Zhejiang Province, China, and to investigate their genetic characteristics. A total of 282 wild shrews were captured between April and October of 2023. The detection of Cryptosporidium in fecal samples, collected from each animal's rectum, was perfor…

Prevalence of leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis: a study of rodents and shrews in cultivated and fallow land, Morogoro rural district, Tanzania.

Leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis are among understudied zoonotic diseases that are also not diagnosed routinely in Tanzania. Humans get leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis through contact with an environment contaminated with Leptospira bacteria and Toxoplasma protozoa from reservoir hosts, which are rodents and cats, respectively. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leptospira and Toxoplasma infections in rodents and shrews in Mikese area of Morogoro Rural District in eastern Tanzania. A total of 89 rodents and one shrew from cultivated and fallow land were tested for le…

Somatostatin-immunoreactive senile plaque-like structures in the frontal cortex and nucleus accumbens of aged tree shrews and Japanese macaques.

BACKGROUND: Previously, we demonstrated decreased expression of somatostatin mRNA in aged macaque brain, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. To investigate whether or not this age-dependent decrease in mRNA is related to morphological changes, we analyzed somatostatin cells in the cerebra of aged Japanese macaques and compared them with those in rats and tree shrews, the latter of which are closely related to primates. METHODS: Brains of aged macaques, tree shrews, and rats were investigated by immunohistochemistry with special emphasis on somatostatin. RESULTS: We observed degenerating s…

Tree shrew immune cell atlas identifies NR1H3⁺ tissue macrophages with conserved anti-inflammatory function.

Rodents are widely used in immunology but do not always recapitulate human immune functions. The tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) is phylogenetically closer to primates than rodents and may help bridge this gap, yet its immune system has not been comprehensively characterised at single-cell resolution. Here, we present a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the tree shrew immune system, profiling 39 cell types across 12 tissues. We uncover human-like tonsillar structures and two transcriptionally distinct splenic macrophage subsets: an NR1H3+ immunoregulatory subset and an IRF8+ pro-inflammatory s
