Salivary immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM) determinations are performed on 74 patients with and without Sjögren's syndrome (SS). In normal subjects IgA is the only immunoglobulin detected in saliva by classical immunodiffusion methods. Correlations between the presence of IgG and/or IgM in saliva and other functional and objective clinical parameters and hsitological aspects of minor salivary glands are studied. Our aim was to find out how the parotid gland functions in 44 patients with juvenile recurrent parotitis, and to assess the value of measuring the serum amylase activity. The AA. had work through medical histories of 44 patients operated for inflammatory and tumoral pathology of submandibular gland. Between inflammatory diseases they emphasize sialolithiasis (45%), acute submaxillaritis (18%) and Kuttner's tumor (11%). Pleomorphic adenoma accounted for the 50% of tumors. Diagnosis was based on each peculiar history sheet, on imaging procedures (simple X-ray plate, echography, sialography, TC) and extemporaneous biopsy. PURPOSE: To describe the use of endoscopy as a technique for diagnosing and treating sialolithiasis. Sialolithiasis is a common pathology of the major salivary glands, yet its accurate detection and treatment is still intriguing.

Salivary calculi are frequent and revealed by very painful signs, which need an urgent therapy. These calculi are more often localized in the submaxillary gland, sometimes in the parotid gland, and unfrequently in the sublingual glands. Congenital absence of major salivary glands, especially the parotid gland, is a rare entity. It is usually monolateral and is not correlated with accessory salivary gland tissue. Aplasia of parotid gland may occur alone or in association with abnormalities of other salivary glands, first branchial arch developmental disturbances or other congenital anomalies.We report an interesting case of bilateral aplasia of the parotid glands together with bilateral accessory parotid tissue, without other congenital or developmental anomalies, and we describe the clinical and radiological findings.

Ninety-four patients with chronic sialodochitis, 45 of these with sialolithiasis, have been followed up for a long time. Sialolithiasis develops in patients with congenital defects in the ductal system of the salivary gland presenting as ectasias and can be regarded as calculous sialoductitis. The etiological factors of sialolithiasis (calculous sialoductitis) are strictures (stenosis) of the ducts (distal portions) and specific topography of the duct (a "broken" duct with abrupt curves in which the concrements may form).

A 16-year-old male patient presented with ankyloglossia accompanied by a complaint of forceful spurting of saliva from the mouth and a unilateral swelling in the submandibular region. Following surgical relief of the ankyloglossia, the spurting of saliva had virtually ceased and the submandibular swelling disappeared without recurrence.
