PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe a single-stage laser assisted uvuloplasty (uvulectomy) and to determine its effectiveness in treatment of snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients treated with laser assisted uvuloplasty in a 49-month period for snoring and/or mild OSA were studied. Frequency of snoring before and after surgery, loudness of snoring and postoperative discomfort were investigated. Patients were asked to evaluate change in daytime energy, sleep habits, missed days of work and also overall satisfaction following laser as

Automated sleep staging remains challenging due to the transitional nature of certain sleep stages, particularly N1. In this paper, we explore modulation spectrograms for automatic sleep staging to capture the transitional nature of sleep stages and compare them with conventional benchmark features, such as the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). We utilized a single-channel EEG (C4-M1) from the DREAMT dataset with subject-independent validation. We stratify participants by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) into Normal, Mild, Moderate, and Severe groups…

BACKGROUND: Sleep staging is a fundamental task in clinical sleep medicine and wearable health monitoring. Traditional sleep staging methods primarily rely on polysomnography which provides high accuracy but involves complex instrumentation and high cost, limiting its application in home-based monitoring and large-scale screening.
METHODS: To enable a more convenient assessment of sleep structure, this study proposes a multi-modal deep learning approach based on instantaneous heart rate (IHR) and instantaneous breathing rate (IBR). In this study, a TCN-BiGRU-SE network is developed, where the

Accurately detecting sleep stages and sleep apnea is essential for assessing sleep quality and diagnosing related health issues, especially in the elderly. However, most existing deep learning models focus on single-task scenarios, overlooking the synergy between sleep staging and apnea detection. Moreover, they don’t consider the impact of age on sleep. To address these issues, this study selects 40 subjects aged 60–90 from the Human Sleep Project dataset as research participants. Supervised principal component analysis is applied to process their polysomnography signals, and S-transform is u…

Accurate identification of sleep stages and disorders is crucial for maintaining health, preventing chronic conditions, and improving diagnosis and treatment. Direct respiratory measurements, as key biomarkers, are missing in traditional wrist- or finger-worn wearables, which thus limit their precision in detection of sleep stages and sleep disorders. By contrast, this work introduces a simple, multimodal, skin-integrated, energy-efficient mechanoacoustic sensor capable of synchronized cardiac and respiratory measurements. The mechanical design enhances sensitivity and durability, enabling con…

OBJECTIVES: Lafora disease (LD) is a fatal progressive myoclonic epilepsy, characterized by disabling myoclonus, intractable seizures, and progressive cognitive decline. At the onset of symptoms, however, distinction from idiopathic generalized epilepsies may be difficult based on EEG because the background activity is typically preserved and the only abnormalities are rare generalized spike-and-wave discharges facilitated by the intermittent light stimulation. This underscores the urgent need for early biomarkers of the disease, particularly as disease-modifying therapies are being developed.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the association between the menopausal transition and declining sleep quality can guide optimal timing for preventive interventions in transitioning women. However, studies lack representation of Asian women and sufficient data on the progression of menopausal stages and sleep quality changes over time in this population.
METHODS: This study included 3305 women in the pre-menopause stage at baseline. The sleep quality and its components were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Menopausal stages were classified as pre-menopause, early transition,

In a recent electroencephalography (EEG) sleep study inspired by complexity theories of consciousness, we found that multi-channel signal diversity progressively decreased from wakefulness to slow wave sleep, but failed to find any significant difference between dreaming and non-dreaming awakenings within the same sleep stage (NREM2). However, we did find that multi-channel Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC) measured over the posterior cortex increased with more perceptual ratings of NREM2 dream experience along a thought-perceptual axis. In this follow-up study, we re-tested our previous findings, u

Automatic estimation of sleep structure is an important aspect in moving sleep monitoring from clinical laboratories to people's homes. However, the transition to more portable systems should not happen at the expense of important physiological signals, such as respiration. Here, we propose the use of cardiorespiratory signals obtained by a suprasternal pressure (SSP) sensor to estimate sleep stages. The sensor is already used for diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) conditions, but besides respiratory effort it can detect cardiac vibrations transmitted through the trachea. We collect…

K-complexes are a key marker of nonrapid eye movement sleep, specifically during stages II sleep. Recent evidence suggests the heart rate responses to a K-complexes may differ between men and women. The purpose of this study was to compare beat-to-beat blood pressure responses to K-complexes in men and women. We hypothesized that the pressor response following a spontaneous K-complex would be augmented in men compared with women. Ten men [age: 23 ± 2 yr, body mass index (BMI): 28 ± 4 kg/m2] and ten women (age: 23 ± 5 yr, BMI: 25 ± 4 kg/m2) were equipped with overnight finger plethysmography an

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) remains a serious public health problem with diagnostic and treatment challenges in many African countries. The absence of a gold-standard biomarker has been a major difficulty for accurate disease staging and treatment follow-up. We therefore attempted to develop a simple, affordable, and noninvasive biomarker for HAT diagnosis and staging. Simultaneous actigraphy and polysomnography as well as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell (WBC) count, trypanosome presence, and C-X-C motif ligand (CXCL)-10 cytokine levels were performed in 20 HAT patients and

Sleep disturbances are common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. However, the underlying neuropathological mechanisms are largely unclear. Previous studies have revealed the important role of the thalamus in the potential mechanisms of sleep disorders. We hypothesized that the sleep disturbances in ESRD patients may correspond to metabolic changes of thalamus and the uremic factors may have a vital contribution on these changes. We performed multi-voxel 1H-MRS of bilateral thalami in 27 ESRD patients who currently receiving hemodialysis treatment and 21 age-matched healthy volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of the neurological stage of human African trypanosomiasis is performed by examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for the presence of trypanosomes and numbers of white blood cells (WBC). Both CSF parameters are also used to assess treatment outcome during follow-up. In view of the importance of CSF examination, and the practical problems encountered with it, we compared the sensitivity of two trypanosome concentration techniques and the repeatability of two cell counting methods, as well as occurrence of systematic differences between them.
METHODS: Patients were recru

BACKGROUND: Sleeping sickness, or human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), is a protozoan disease that affects rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. Determination of the disease stage, essential for correct treatment, represents a key issue in the management of patients. In the present study we evaluated the potential of CXCL10, CXCL13, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, MMP-9, B2MG, neopterin and IgM to complement current methods for staging Trypanosoma brucei gambiense patients.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Five hundred and twelve T. b. gambiense HAT patients originated from Angola, Chad and the Democratic Republic o
