Modeling smoking-attributable mortality among adults with major depression in the United States.

Tobacco-related health disparities disproportionately affect smokers with major depression (MD). Although tobacco simulation models have been applied to general populations, to date they have not considered populations with a comorbid mental health condition. We developed and calibrated a simulation model of smoking and MD comorbidity for the US adult population using the 2005-2018 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health. We use this model to evaluate trends in smoking prevalence, smoking-attributable mortality and life-years lost among adults with MD, and changes in smoking prevalence by ment

LGBTQ Youth and Young Adult Perspectives on a Culturally Tailored Group Smoking Cessation Program.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of smoking among LGBTQ youth and young adults (YYAs) is much higher than that of non-LGBTQ young people. The current study explored LGBTQ YYA perceptions of a culturally tailored group smoking cessation counselling program, along with how the intervention could be improved. METHODS: We conducted focus groups (n = 24) with 204 LGBTQ YYAs in Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. Open-ended questions focused on their feelings, likes and dislikes, concerns and additional ideas for a culturally tailored group cessation counselling intervention. Focus group transcripts were coded

"Accommodating" smoke-free policies: tobacco industry's Courtesy of Choice programme in Latin America.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the implementation and effects of the Courtesy of Choice programme designed to "accommodate" smokers as an alternative to smoke-free policies developed by Philip Morris International (PMI) and supported by RJ Reynolds (RJR) and British American Tobacco (BAT) since the mid-1990s in Latin America. METHODS: Analysis of internal tobacco industry documents, BAT "social reports", news reports and tobacco control legislation. RESULTS: Since the mid-1990s, PMI, BAT and RJR promoted Accommodation Programs to maintain the social acceptability of smoking. As in other parts of t

Prevention of thyroid associated-ophthalmopathy in children and adults: current views and management of preventable risk factors.

Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention are defined according to the timing of the preventive intervention in the natural history of a disease. Secondary prevention in Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is challenging in the absence of reliable specific serum markers for subclinical GO that would allow an early diagnosis. Some risk factors for occurrence or progression of GO have been identified. Cigarette smoking, thyroid dysfunction and radioactive iodine (RAI) are known preventable risk factors. The list is probably much longer, and future research should be aimed at identifying more. Smoking c

Transdermal nicotine replacement and smoking cessation.

Transdermal nicotine systems are a useful adjunct to smoking cessation. The larger-sized nicotine patches provide steady-state replacement of approximately 50 percent of the average serum nicotine level obtained by smoking one to one and one-half packs of cigarettes a day. This level is sufficient to prevent many symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, including physical craving, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, hostility, hunger and difficulty concentrating. In double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, transdermal nicotine systems have been about twice as successful as placebo in helping patients

Compliance with Smoke-Free Policy and Challenges in Implementation: Evidence from Bengkulu, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: The Basas Spanish Squat with electrical stimulation (E-stim) has shown promising results as a potential key exercise in treatment of athletes with patellar tendinopathy. Gold standard exercise therapy for tendon injuries consists of tendon loading exercises, or exercises that appropriately applies high levels of mechanical strain to the tendon. The theoretical pathway in which the Basas Spanish Squat with E-stim improves tendinopathy has been speculated to be the additional strain applied through the patellar tendon during superimposition of E-stim. This theory, however, has yet to

Smoke-Free Policies in the World's 50 Busiest Airports - August 2017.

Exposure to secondhand smoke from burning tobacco products causes premature death and disease, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer among nonsmoking adults and sudden infant death syndrome, acute respiratory infections, middle ear disease, exacerbated asthma, respiratory symptoms, and decreased lung function in children (1,2). The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke (1). Previous CDC reports on airport smoke-free policies found that most large-hub airports in the United States prohibit smoking (3); however, th

Exercise interventions for smoking cessation.

BACKGROUND: Taking regular exercise, whether cardiovascular-type exercise or resistance exercise, may help people to give up smoking, particularly by reducing cigarette withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and by helping to manage weight gain. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of exercise-based interventions alone, or combined with a smoking cessation programme, for achieving long-term smoking cessation, compared with a smoking cessation intervention alone or other non-exercise intervention. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group Specialised Register for studi

Positive psychotherapy for smoking cessation enhanced with text messaging: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite reductions in cigarette smoking in the U.S., improvements in the efficacy of smoking cessation treatments are needed, as rates of sustained abstinence remain disappointingly low. Both low positive affect and high negative affect contribute to smoking relapse and constitute viable targets for smoking cessation interventions. Although some clinical trials have evaluated interventions to address depression as a smoking relapse risk factor, very few have focused on positive affect. Recently, we developed and conducted a preliminary clinical trial of a smoking cessation treatmen

Intermediate cessation outcomes among quitline callers during a national tobacco education campaign.

INTRODUCTION: From March 19 through June 10, 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the first federally funded National Tobacco Education Campaign: Tips From Former Smokers (Tips). This study examined the campaign's impact on quitline callers' intermediate cessation outcomes. METHODS: We used quitline data from 23 states to examine changes in enrollment, service utilization, quit attempts, and self-reported quitting for 7 days or longer during Tips versus a similar time period in 2011. We used multivariate models to examine the relationship between Tips exposure (measur

Building a comprehensive model to create tobacco-free cultures on college and university campuses.

The Eliminate Tobacco Use (ETU) Initiative was founded by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and The University of Texas (UT) System in 2015 to reduce tobacco use in higher education settings across five campus constituencies-students, faculty, staff, patients, and the community. The operational framework was conceived to design, implement, and advance tobacco control actions involving public policy, awareness programming, and the delivery of tobacco cessation services. With commitment from every UT System president, participating institutions adopted evidence-based strategies,

Adequacy of nicotine replacement and success quitting tobacco in clinical populations: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for smoking cessation is an effective intervention that reduces urges to smoke by substituting a safer source of nicotine. NRT dosing is imprecise, however, and there is some evidence that patients and providers are reluctant to use the larger doses that may be appropriate for some people who smoke. In this analysis, we assess the relationship between cigarettes smoked and NRT prescribed, and between adequacy of nicotine replacement and cessation success. METHODS: We analyzed data from 84,667 patients and 492 clinics participating in a province-w

Preventing tobacco use from the start: Short- and medium-term impacts on the youth.

Adolescent substance use is a persistent global problem and a challenge for society and the public health authorities. In this paper we investigate the impact of a prevention-oriented policy implemented in Icelandic secondary schools from 1997 to 2002 (the "Drug-free Iceland" programme) on country-level smoking rates on the youth. Using a panel data source spanning from 1985 to 2010 and composed both by Iceland and a set of countries where such a type of policy was absent, we apply the Synthetic Control Method to construct the counterfactual of Iceland. Comparing Iceland with this counterfactu

Nanomicelles-in-coaxial nanofibers with exit channels as a transdermal delivery platform for smoking cessation.

Smoking is a life-threatening habit; that is why many nicotine-replacement therapies (NRTs), which include chewing gums, nicotine patches, lozenges, mouth sprays, inhalers and nasal sprays that are usually administered for 8-12 weeks, have been reported for smoking cessation. We report the fabrication of patches comprising nanomicelles-in-coaxial nanofibers (NFs) for the transdermal delivery of varenicline (VAR) tartrate, a partial agonist of the α4β2 receptor subtype, for smoking cessation. The cores of the fabricated coaxial NF structures are composed of polyethylene oxide, VAR-loaded Pluron

Evaluation of Risk Perception of Smoking after the Implementation of California's Tobacco 21 Law.

Decreasing smoking initiation remains a public health priority. In 2016, California, in the United States, enacted the Tobacco 21 law, which raised the minimum age for the purchase of tobacco products from age 18 to age 21. This paper evaluates whether the enactment and implementation of the Tobacco 21 law changed how young adults perceive the risk(s) of smoking. Data were drawn from a cohort of emerging adults (n = 575) in California who were non-daily smokers at enrollment and followed quarterly for 3 years. Data were collected during 2015-2019. Piecewise multilevel regression models were us

The implementation of a tobacco use registry in an academic family practice.

PURPOSE: Patients who use tobacco often are not provided evidence-based interventions because of barriers such as lack of time or expertise. Using a chronic disease model, we sought to improve delivery of care with an innovative decision support tool and a tobacco use registry. METHODS: We designed and implemented a decision support tool in an academic family medicine clinic. To assess barriers, we measured duration of visit and provider confidence (scale of 0-10) in prescribing cessation medications before and after the introduction of the tool. We examined fidelity through daily counts of r

[What are the epidemiological data on smoking and co-addictions during pregnancy?].

The goal of this publication is to attempt to better understand how we arrived at this medical catastrophe: 28% of the French women who smoke during the pregnancy! And that does not take into account other addictions (alcohol, drugs legal or illegal) whose figures are poorly specified. From the American epidemiologic data, the United States being ahead of us in the stage of the epidemic, and European data, can one extract the favoring factors and effective measurements to stop this epidemic? What is the epidemiology of the other addictions and is there any relationship between the consumption
