Loneliness in young adulthood: Its intersecting forms and its association with psychological well-being and family characteristics in Northern Taiwan.

OBJECTIVES: Most researchers have examined forms of loneliness as discrete and emotional distress. The approach proposed in this study captures the reality that many persons experience more than one dimension of loneliness-varying degrees coupled with their psychological well-being in a family context. This study explores the latent structure of loneliness during young adulthood and its association with psychological well-being, as well as how these are related to their family characteristics in adolescence. METHODS: Data are from 2,748 young people, a cohort sample from the Taiwan Youth Proj

The Risk of Bullying and Probability of Help-Seeking Behaviors in School Children: A Bayesian Network Analysis.

An increase in aggressive behaviors in adolescents has been observed for a few years. The participation in bullying is associated with many psychosocial difficulties in adolescent development. On the other hand, the help-seeking behavior can be one of the most important protective factors that reduce the risk for this type of violence. The study was aimed at estimating the risk factors, as well as the protective factors of school bullying, by using the Bayesian networks to build a model allowing to estimate the probability of occurrence of the aggressive and help-seeking behaviors among school

Narrative competence in children with pragmatic language impairment: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Children with pragmatic language impairment (PLI) show impairments in the use of language in social contexts. Although the issue has been gaining attention in recent literature, not much is known about the developmental trajectories of children who experience pragmatic language problems. Since narrative competence is an important predictor of both academic and social success, evaluating narrative competence in children with PLI is deemed important. AIMS: To examine the development of narrative competence of children with PLI compared with typically developing (TD) children using a

The weight of a hug: Abdominal obesity as a barrier to health and human connection.

A hug is a simple act of human connection, yet for many individuals with abdominal obesity, it can be physically challenging and emotionally uncomfortable. This paper examines how abdominal obesity affects both health and social interactions, using hugging as an illustrative example. In collectivist cultures such as Bangladesh, physical touch reinforces trust and family bonds. Obesity-related limitations can reduce closeness; promote avoidance and lower self-confidence, often compounded by social stigma. Abdominal obesity is also associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabe

Reviving-like prosocial behavior in response to unconscious or dead conspecifics in rodents.

Whereas humans exhibit emergency responses to assist unconscious individuals, how nonhuman animals react to unresponsive conspecifics is less well understood. We report that mice exhibit stereotypic behaviors toward unconscious or dead social partners, which escalate from sniffing and grooming to more forceful actions such as mouth or tongue biting and tongue pulling. The latter intense actions, more prominent in familiar pairs, begin after prolonged immobility and unresponsiveness and cease when the partner regains activity. Their consequences, including improved airway opening and clearance

The gene "degrees of kevin bacon" (dokb) regulates a social network behaviour in Drosophila melanogaster.

Social networks are a mathematical representation of interactions among individuals which are prevalent across various animal species. Studies of human populations have shown the breadth of what can spread throughout a social network: obesity, smoking cessation, happiness, drug use and divorce. 'Betweenness centrality' is a key property of social networks that indicates an individual's importance in facilitating communication and cohesion within the network. Heritability of betweenness centrality has been suggested in several species, however the genetic regulation of this property remains eni

Punishing and toxic neighborhood environments independently predict the intergenerational social mobility of black and white children.

We use data on intergenerational social mobility by neighborhood to examine how social and physical environments beyond concentrated poverty predict children's long-term well-being. First, we examine neighborhoods that are harsh on children's development: those characterized by high levels of violence, incarceration, and lead exposure. Second, we examine potential supportive or offsetting mechanisms that promote children's development, such as informal social control, cohesion among neighbors, and organizational participation. Census tract mobility estimates from linked income tax and Census r

Maternal touch in the first three years contributes to depression and antisocial behaviors in late childhood.

Touch plays an important role in our life. As an example, maternal touch has been found related to physical and social development in newborns and infants. However, data on the relation between maternal touch in children's early years and their emotional and behavioral development in later life is still scarce. The current study investigated the relation between maternal touch in children's first three years and negative emotions and antisocial behaviors in late childhood. We recruited 267 children (9-12 yrs) and their mothers to participate in our study. The mothers were asked to report their

Health is Power: an ecological, theory-based health intervention for women of color.

OBJECTIVE: Physical inactivity and poor dietary habits plague Americans as health challenges, with women of color most vulnerable to their detrimental effects. Individually focused interventions have not demonstrated lasting success, possibly due to the lack of focus on sustainable social and physical environment factors. This manuscript describes the rationale, design and methodology of Health Is Power (HIP), a transcultural, community based, randomized controlled trial that investigated the effectiveness of a group cohesion intervention to increase physical activity and improve dietary habit

Design and results of the promotional campaign for the "Understanding pre-exposure prophylaxis modalities for HIV prevention in European communities" (PROTECT) survey.

Understanding how men who have sex with men, transgender and non-binary (MSMTNB) people can be engaged in HIV prevention research is critical for ongoing collaboration with these key communities. A campaign was developed in 2023 to market an online survey to European MSMTNB participants. Key campaign elements included: a project logo, a slogan, a cohesive and consistent design, a website, and images tailored to target groups for promotion across social media, dating apps and hard copy. 15,458 MSMTNB participants completed the survey, 55% via a link found on dating apps and 38% from social medi

Social competence in autism: A structural equation modeling approach.

Autistic individuals present with difficulties in social competence (e.g., navigating social interactions and fostering relationships). Clinical interventions widely target social cognition and social behavior, but there is inconsistent understanding of the underlying components of social competence. The present study used structural equation modeling to examine social cognition and social behavior and explore the relationship between these latent constructs. Autistic youth (ages 10-17; n = 219) and their caregivers participated in this study. Constructs of social cognition and social behavior

From Big Data to Knowledge in the Social Sciences.

One of the challenges associated with high-volume, diverse datasets is whether synthesis of open data streams can translate into actionable knowledge. Recognizing that challenge and other issues related to these types of data, the National Institutes of Health developed the Big Data to Knowledge or BD2K initiative. The concept of translating "big data to knowledge" is important to the social and behavioral sciences in several respects. First, a general shift to data-intensive science will exert an influence on all scientific disciplines, but particularly on the behavioral and social sciences g

A sexual health strategy for Australia--time for action.

Australia still does not have a national sexual health strategy. Sexually transmissible infections such as chlamydia continue to plague the community, and the incidence of HIV is increasing. But a cohesive sexual health strategy cannot merely be disease-focussed, it must include the broader social and cultural aspects of sexual behaviour and sexuality. We propose a public health framework for the development of a national sexual health strategy that will bring Australia in line with the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
