Multiculturalism and Social Justice Themes in Group Counseling Research: A Latent Dirichlet Allocation Analysis of Published Abstracts.

The importance of multicultural competence for effective group therapy practice has been widely acknowledged. Gaining an understanding of trends in the canon of group therapy scholarship and identifying gaps has implications for future research and practice. As such, the present study examined trends in the scholarly literature on multiculturalism (e.g., culture, ethnicity, identity) and social justice (e.g., redressing inequities, systemic oppression, and privilege) in group psychotherapy. Method: We conducted a PsycINFO search for peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles with keywords relat

Group sports games for social anxiety in university students: a randomized controlled trial revealing gender-specific efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is a prevalent issue among college students, with many experiencing chronic anxiety in social situations and a strong fear of negative evaluation. This condition can severely impair both occupational and social functioning, leading to significant consequences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Therapeutic Group Sports Games (TGSG) for reducing social anxiety. The TGSG intervention incorporates Yalom's therapeutic principles into structured sports activities. METHODS: A total of 105 college students with elevated social anxiety were randomly as

Psychedelic Communitas: Intersubjective Experience During Psychedelic Group Sessions Predicts Enduring Changes in Psychological Wellbeing and Social Connectedness.

Background: Recent years have seen a resurgence of research on the potential of psychedelic substances to treat addictive and mood disorders. Historically and contemporarily, psychedelic studies have emphasized the importance of contextual elements ('set and setting') in modulating acute drug effects, and ultimately, influencing long-term outcomes. Nevertheless, current small-scale clinical and laboratory studies have tended to bypass a ubiquitous contextual feature of naturalistic psychedelic use: its social dimension. This study introduces and psychometrically validates an adapted Communitas

Effects of Minority Stress, Group-Level Coping, and Social Support on Mental Health of German Gay Men.

OBJECTIVE: According to epidemiological studies, gay men are at a higher risk of mental disorders than heterosexual men. In the current study, the minority stress theory was investigated in German gay men: 1) it was hypothesized that minority stressors would positively predict mental health problems and that 2) group-level coping and social support variables would moderate these predictions negatively. METHODS: Data from 1,188 German self-identified gay men were collected online. The questionnaire included items about socio-demographics, minority stress (victimization, rejection sensitivity,

Association between social group participation and perceived health among elderly inhabitants of a previously methylmercury-polluted area.

OBJECTIVE: This study attempted to clarify the association between participation in a social group and perceived health among elderly residents of a previously methylmercury-polluted area in Japan. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using eligible subjects from the Shiranui Sea coastal area, where mercury poisoning due to daily intake of fish and shellfish had previously caused some residents to develop the neurological disorder "Minamata disease (MD)." In the present study, we selected subjects aged ≥65 years who had never been diagnosed with MD or applied for medical treatment co…

Clinical and genetic outcome determinants of Internet- and group-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: No study has investigated clinical or genetic predictors and moderators of Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) compared with cognitive behavioral group therapy for (CBGT) for SAD. Identification of predictors and moderators is essential to the clinician in deciding which treatment to recommend for whom. We aimed to identify clinical and genetic (5-HTTLPR, COMTval158met, and BDNFval66met) predictors and moderators of ICBT and CBGT. METHOD: We performed three types of analyses on data from a sample comprising participants (N = 126) who had undergone ICBT or CBGT in a ran

How does social comparison within a self-help group influence adjustment to chronic illness? A longitudinal study.

Despite the growing popularity of self-help groups for people with chronic illness, there has been surprisingly little research into how these may support adjustment to illness. This study investigated the role that social comparison, occurring within a self-help group, may play in adjustment to chronic illness. A model of adjustment based on control process theory and response shift theory was tested to determine whether social comparisons predicted adjustment after controlling for the catalyst for adjustment (disease severity) and antecedents (demographic and psychological factors). A sample

Effects of single-use and group-use enrichment on stereotypy and intragroup aggressive and affiliative behaviors of a social group of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) at the Singapore Zoo.

Four food-based enrichment devices were used to test the effects of single-use and group-use enrichment devices on stereotypy, intragroup aggression, and affiliation in a compatible group of 5 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). All enrichment devices were found to reduce overall stereotypic behavior from baseline levels (without enrichment). The occurrence of stereotypic behavior differed between individual squirrel monkeys with an adult female showing the highest level of stereotypic behavior. This individual also showed the highest usage of enrichment devices, and stereotypic behavior was

Social justice interdependence among students in counseling psychology training programs: Group actor-partner interdependence model of social justice attitudes, training program norms, advocacy intentions, and peer relationships.

Counseling psychologists have voiced the importance of nurturing social justice principles in the training of psychologists to better meet diverse people's psychological and social needs. Much of the research on training, however, has been focused on individual factors (e.g., self-efficacy, spirituality). Little empirical evidence exists on the mutual support among students and the role of shared social justice principles in counseling psychology training programs. Thus, we used the group actor-partner interdependence model (GAPIM) to test whether the advocacy intentions of a given student in

Transdiagnostic group CBT vs. standard group CBT for depression, social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia/panic disorder: Study protocol for a pragmatic, multicenter non-inferiority randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Transdiagnostic Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TCBT) manuals delivered in individual format have been reported to be just as effective as traditional diagnosis specific CBT manuals. We have translated and modified the "The Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders" (UP-CBT) for group delivery in Mental Health Service (MHS), and shown effects comparable to traditional CBT in a naturalistic study. As the use of one manual instead of several diagnosis-specific manuals could simplify logistics, reduce waiting time, and increase therapist expertise compared to d

Social, sexual and structural factors shaping HIV vulnerability among transgender women in Mali: a qualitative focus group study.

Transgender women (TGW) in Mali face discrimination and stigma, possibly exacerbating HIV vulnerability and limiting access to health services. We identified HIV vulnerability factors among TGW by exploring perceptions and experiences of TGW from urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and those of community workers, using six focus groups (n = 44) and a data thematic content analysis. The analysis highlighted that TGW's sexual networks included their cisgender wives and multiple male partners; these networks were shaped by social expectations to marry women and financial pressures leading to trans

Beyond Attendance: Social Anxiety and Psychiatric Concerns Predict Mutual-Help Group Involvement in a U.S. National Longitudinal Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Involvement in mutual-help groups (MHGs) is associated with positive alcohol recovery outcomes. Attendance is a first step to involvement, but barriers to attendance remain poorly understood, especially among second-wave (non-12-step) MHGs. This study aimed to describe the most common barriers to MHG attendance, describe variation in barriers across diverse MHG types, and identify attendance barrier domains associated with MHG involvement over a 12-month period. METHOD: Data were from the Peer Alternatives (PAL) Study 2021 Cohort, a longitudinal, online survey of second-wave and 12

The Effect of Temporary Group Identity on Adolescent Social Mindfulness Decisions: An Empirical Study Using Team Sports Contexts.

Social mindfulness entails the consideration of the interests of others while respecting their autonomy. Although long-term group identity generates in-group favoritism in social mindfulness decisions, the effect of temporary group identity on social mindfulness remains to be validated. This study examined this effect by recruiting a convenience sample of 74 adolescents from a youth basketball club, who were randomly assigned to either an in-group or out-group decision-making condition. A basketball game scenario was used to establish temporary group identities, referencing the Minimal Group p

A mixed-methods study of parents' social connectedness in a group-based parenting program in low-income communities.

Group-based parent training (PT) is an evidence-based approach for strengthening parenting skills and reducing child behavior problems. However, there has been little research on the social connectedness (SC) formed among PT participants, particularly in low-income communities where parents may be more socially isolated. This study describes SC formed among parents in a group-based PT program implemented in their children's school and its association with changes in child behavior. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data collection occurred between 2020 and 2022. Parents (n = 97) complet

Feasibility of an Intensive, Disorder-Specific, Group-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Intervention for Adolescents with Social Anxiety Disorder.

This study examined the preliminary acceptability and efficacy of an intensive, group-based, disorder-specific cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) intervention for adolescents with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Fourteen Australian adolescents with SAD (78.6% female, M age = 13.93 years) and their parents completed the program plus measures of treatment satisfaction, and provided feedback. Clinical interviews and surveys were administered pre-treatment, post-treatment, and at 6-month follow-up to determine diagnostic status and assess related variables. Post-treatment satisfaction scores were

Randomized trial of cognitive behaviour group therapy and a mindfulness-based intervention for social anxiety disorder: Preliminary findings.

Recent studies have evaluated the possible efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, few trials have compared MBIs with a first-line treatment. This study evaluated the relative efficacy of an MBI adapted for SAD (MBI-SAD) to cognitive behaviour group therapy (CBGT) for SAD. Participants were randomized to 12 weekly group sessions of the MBI-SAD (n = 52) or CBGT (n = 45). Results revealed that CBGT fared better than the MBI-SAD in reducing clinician- and self-rated social anxiety severity. The difference between the MBI-SAD and CBGT exceeded

A Social Media-Based Support Group for Youth Living With HIV in Nigeria (SMART Connections): Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth living with HIV (YLHIV) enrolled in HIV treatment experience higher loss to follow-up, suboptimal treatment adherence, and greater HIV-related mortality compared with younger children or adults. Despite poorer health outcomes, few interventions target youth specifically. Expanding access to mobile phone technology, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in particular, has increased interest in using this technology to improve health outcomes. mHealth interventions may present innovative opportunities to improve adherence and retention among YLHIV in LMICs. OBJECTIVE: Th

Erroneous inference based on a lack of preference within one group: Autism, mice, and the social approach task.

The Social Approach Task is commonly used to identify sociability deficits when modeling liability factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in mice. It was developed to expand upon existing assays to examine distinct aspects of social behavior in rodents and has become a standard component of mouse ASD-relevant phenotyping pipelines. However, there is variability in the statistical analysis and interpretation of results from this task. A common analytical approach is to conduct within-group comparisons only, and then interpret a difference in significance levels as if it were a group differe
