OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of partnerships between people with disabilities and service dogs on functional performance and social interaction. METHOD. A single-subject, alternating treatment design was used. The participants were 3 women with mobility challenges who owned service dogs. For each participant, time and perceived amount of effort for two tasks were measured for functional performance. Interaction and satisfaction levels were measured for social interactions. RESULTS. Primary findings were that service dog partnerships decreased performance time

The livelihoods of the Fulani mobile pastoralists in the Sahel, West and Central Africa are characterised by mobility (related to the needs of their animals), extensive social networks, and a focus on social ties as the basis of status and influence ('wealth in people'). The Sahel environment in which many Fulani nomads live has become embroiled in jihadism, conflict, and violence; at the same time, this region has experienced an increase in opportunities to connect through the wireless mobile communication system. This paper analyses the triangle of mobility, communication, and insecurity in

A review of data presented in a national study of perceptions and experiences of mobility with an age-stratified sample of 564 Irish adults with vision impairment found that mobility was a significant issue. Comorbidity is a factor with 97 (29.5%) of the under-65 age group and 135 (59%) of the older age group reporting additional health challenges. Adapting to vision loss and ageing has psychological, functional, social and health implications and help-seeking is a complex process. This may explain the limited use of mobility aids and guide dogs in the total sample (5%), with a notable absence

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida (SB), a congenital defect affecting neural tube closure, results in physical, neuropsychological, and social challenges. Adolescents with SB may experience impaired social functioning due to mobility limitations, pain, and cognitive issues, which can affect their overall well-being. However, little is known about factors facilitating social functioning in these adolescents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the perceptions and expectations of adolescents with SB and their parents regarding social functioning, identifying facilitators and challenges that could inf

The global mental health burden is rising, with economic segregation as a key social determinant contributing to mental health and its inequalities. However, most studies rely on residential-based segregation measures failing to capture the actual segregation individuals experience through daily mobility and activities. Using a large-scale mobility dataset across the contiguous United States, we quantify mobility-based economic segregation and examine its associations with mental health outcomes across income groups and urbanicity levels. We find that individuals in the lowest and highest inco

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that human mobility is an important factor in dengue epidemiology. Changes in mobility resulting from COVID-19 pandemic set up a real-life situation to test this hypothesis. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of reduced mobility due to this pandemic in the occurrence of dengue in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
METHOD: It is an ecological study of time series, developed between January and August 2020. We use the number of confirmed dengue cases and residential mobility, on a daily basis, from secondary information sources. Mobility was represented by the

Severe obesity is a growing health challenge, and some experience disabling functional problems despite major weight loss. In this case report, we present two male patients with giant pannus, resulting in limited mobility, recurrent infections, and social restrictions. Both underwent giant panniculectomy, removing 34.6 kg and 18.9 kg of tissue, respectively. Postoperative results included regaining the ability to walk without mobility aids, resuming physical activity, and increasing social interaction. Giant panniculectomy can provide substantial quality-of-life improvement in selected patient

BACKGROUND: Mobility plays a major role in healthy aging and social participation. This study explored whether accessibility problems in the housing environment are negatively associated with mobility in old age and whether this association is moderated by differences in an individual's preference for spending time outside the home (outdoor motivation).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article reports the results of a research project on mobility in old age. The project included a survey study of 120 community-dwelling older adults between 59 and 92 years of age (mean = 71.7 years, SD = 7.3 years)

BackgroundMobility impairments in Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impact individuals' physical health, independence, and psychosocial wellbeing. In this review, mobility loss is used to refer to altered or impaired mobility (eg, reduced gait, balance difficulties, freezing of gait), rather than a complete loss of mobility. These changes affect daily functioning and quality of life. Carers also experience significant burden as they manage mobility issues. Understanding the implications of mobility loss in PD is essential for improving support for both people with PD and carers. This revi

This study identified factors affecting reintegration to normal living (RNL) after lower extremity amputation. A questionnaire was used to evaluate RNL at a veterans' medical center and private rehabilitation clinic. The patients were 42 elderly individuals (68 +/- 1.5 years). Eighty-eight percent were men and 76% had additional health problems. Unilateral below-knee amputations, unilateral above-knee amputations, and bilateral amputations accounted for 38%, 36%, and 26% of subjects, respectively. Eleven questions were asked to evaluate mobility, self-care, work, recreation, social activities

Different life course models explain variations in allostatic load (AL) as the accumulation, sensitive period, path, and social mobility models. This study investigates which life course models are most instrumental in explaining AL in later life. Three waves of the longitudinal German Heinz Nixdorf Recall cohort study were used considering 11,959 observations of 4,814 individuals aged 45-75 years at baseline. AL was derived from 13 biomarkers and socioeconomic status (SES) was measured by life course and current SES. Random-effects linear regression models were employed to test for the sensit…

Since early interventions have improved survival in traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI), there is a shift toward addressing long-term outcomes like community reintegration and social participation. Despite its importance, community reintegration remains under-researched, particularly in Northern India. This study aims to explore societal reintegration in people with TSCI in Northern India using the Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique-Short Form (CHART-SF). The CHART-SF examines the impact of age, gender, injury level, terrain, and the ASIA impairment scale (AIS) on physical indep

This study uses an aspirations-capabilities framework to provide insight into transgender mobility based on in-depth interviews with 30 khwaja sira sex workers in Lahore. Respondents narrated mobility as a defining and persistent feature of their lives linked to their gender variance and experience of everyday violence and discrimination. Mobilities were experienced as oppressive or liberating depending on how much control they provided sex workers within managing risk in their lives. Respondents differentiated between two main forms of mobility: migration and displacement. Descriptions of mig

Quality of life in Duchenne muscular dystrophy has been reported to be negatively affected by the lack of qualifying education and the lack of opportunities for participation in leisure activities. Two thirds of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have cognitive and/or psychiatric problems. Thus, we conducted a survey study on mobility, school problems, executive functions, social participation and quality of life in young patients in Switzerland. We contacted 60 male patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy aged 8-18 years through the Swiss Registry for Neuromuscular Disorders. Mobilit

Social needs are sociocultural and economic factors influencing health and quality of life, including, for example, mobility limitations or financial difficulties. Multimorbidity - the presence of two or more long-term conditions (LTCs) - is an increasing public health challenge, with social needs often compounding the negative health outcomes associated with multimorbidity. In this study, we present a novel multidimensional framework for identifying and characterising social needs within a population-based cohort of adults with multimorbidity in England, utilising data from the Clinical Pract

Mobility is essential for quality of life and social participation. Some individuals with spinal cord injury have sufficient residual lower extremity motor control to walk. Improving walking function incorporates practice and training, and assistive devices or stimulation to augment function and balance. Overground robotic exoskeletons may have the potential to transform upright mobility in the future. Most individuals with spinal cord injury use a wheelchair for at least some of their mobility needs. Wheelchair skills training can open up new possibilities for participation. Regardless of the

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that a higher level of social activity was associated with decreased risk of incident disability in older adults.
METHODS: Data came from older adults in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, an ongoing longitudinal cohort study of aging. Analyses were restricted to persons without clinical dementia and reporting no need for help performing any task in the particular functional domain assessed. Participants were followed for an average of 5.1 years (SD = 2.5). Social activity, based on 6 items (visiting friends or relatives; going to restaurants, sporting eve
